Musical Friday / Viernes Musicales: You'll never Understand Harder (Mesh)

Hi guys, Friday again!

I want to share a song I've heard a lot during this week. I don't know at all what it is that it's gotten so catchy and addictive, but I don't get tired of listening to You'll Never Understand Harder, by Mesh.

There's something in the voice of Mark Hockings and in the symphonic music that makes me return to this song over and over again. It relaxes me and makes me active at the same time, it's a feeling hard to explain in words.

However, when I read the lyrics alone, without background music, there's a decadence, a kind of pain on its terminal stage, which is enviable to me. It's a very simple poem, easy to retain, especially the chorus, which I've hummed a lot.

Hola muchachos, ¡viernes de nuevo!

Les quiero compartir una canción que he escuchado muchísimo durante esta semana. No sé del todo qué es lo que tiene que se me ha hecho tan pegadiza y adictiva, pero no me canso de escuchar You'll never Understand Harder, de Mesh.

Hay algo en la voz de Mark Hockings y en lo sinfónico de la música que me hace volver a esta canción una y otra vez. Me relaja y pone activo a la vez, es un sentimiento difícil de explicar en palabras.

Sin embargo, cuando leo la letra sola, sin música de fondo, hay una decadencia, una especie de dolor en su etapa terminal, que me parece envidiable. Es un poema muy sencillo, fácil de retener, especialmente el coro, el cual he tarareado muchísimo.

Ya que estamos de paso, los invito a leer mi reseña sobre el más reciente disco de la banda, Live at Neues Gewandhaus Leipzig, en el número 14 de Gothic & Amazing, junto con otras sorpresas. *guiño*

Thinking: High or Low Fantasy? / Pensando: ¿Fantasía Alta o Baja?

Hi guys, how do you do this week?

Have you ever wondered how many fantasy subgenres exist? I have, and that's why I've been talking about the subject on the blog. Even so, I still needed to talk about the biggest two and most well-known that can be found: High and Low Fantasy.

I'm more than sure you've read stories that fall into these categories, but completely ignoring the case, and would not be the only ones, I myself realized it while reading about it!

The line that divides both types of fantasy is simple: the kind of world where the story takes place. If the world where the story unfolds is fantastic, then this is High Fantasy. Examples of this are The Lord of the Rings, Song of Ice and Fire and Venetina de Veniseria.

Low Fantasy is the opposite. It's a term used when we speak of a "real" world through which the magical world can be accessed, this being a secondary world. Here come Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia and my FanFiction Sangre Temerosa.

Obviously, these are not all subgenres out there, but there will be time to know them all in due course. And since we're talking about fantasy, I tell you that Cats' Seal doesn't fall in any of these genres, in the least. Both this book and the rest of the saga (yes, a saga's coming, and a long one) fall into urban and dark fantasy.

Hola muchachos, ¿cómo les ha ido esta semana?

¿Alguna vez se han preguntado cuántos subgéneros de fantasía existen? Yo sí, y es por eso que he estado hablando sobre el tema en el blog. Aun así, me faltaba hablar sobre los dos más grandes y conocidos que se pueden encontrar: la Fantasía Alta y la Baja.

Estoy más que seguro de que han leído historias que caen en estas categorías, pero ignorando completamente el caso, y no serían los únicos, ¡yo mismo me di cuenta de ello mientras leía sobre el tema! 

La línea que divide ambos tipos de fantasía es sencilla: el tipo de mundo en donde tiene lugar la historia. Si el mundo en donde se desarrolla la historia es fantástico, entonces esta es de fantasía alta. Ejemplos de esto son El Señor de los Anillos, Canción de Hielo y Fuego y Venetina de Veniseria.

La fantasía baja es todo lo contrario. Es un término que se usa cuando hablamos de un mundo “real” por el cual se puede acceder al mundo mágico, siendo este un mundo secundario. Aquí entran Harry Potter, Las Crónicas de Narnia y mi FanFiction Sangre Temerosa.

Evidentemente, estos no son todos los subgéneros que hay, pero ya habrá tiempo para conocerlos todos en su debido momento. Y ya que estamos hablando de fantasía, les cuento que Sello de los Gatos no cae en ninguno de estos géneros, en lo más mínimo. Tanto este libro como el resto de la saga (sí, se viene una saga, y larga) caen en la fantasía urbana y oscura.

¿Qué creen que se encontrarán en esta historia? ¡Falta poco para descubrirlo! No dejen de visitar mi Wattpad  para leerla apenas esté lista. La magia llega en Abril. ¡Atentos!

I became an academic! / ¡Me volví académico!

Hello people! How is this week being with you?

Today I come with very good news. During these last days I was working on an unusual project, something that I kept secret for a while, and it is that I wrote a modest academic work on Edgar Allan Poe published in the Sheffield Gothic Reading Group.

Sheffield Gothic is a postgraduate group at the University of Sheffield, England, dedicated to the estudy of Gothic topics, whether classic or contemporary. For a long time I wanted to take on the challenge of working on this possibility, see what came out of it, and here we are, with the first guest blog! This is entitled Immortality and Death matters in "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar," and I share with you the Spanish translation at the end of this post, but click here to read the original in English!

I am also happy to tell you that two other works on Poe were approved, in which I'm already submerged. Soon they will see the light just like the firstborn, so be vigilant!

I take this opportunity to remind you not to take your eye off my profile in Wattpad. Next week already I'll be publishing Cats' Seal, first in English and later in Spanish. I have not forgotten Reflections, but things have been going this way, and at any time I'll have news about it. *wink*

¡Hola gente! ¿Qué tal los trata esta semana?

Hoy vengo con una muy buena noticia. Durante estos últimos días estuve trabajando en un proyecto inusual, algo que mantuve en secreto por un buen tiempo, y es que escribí un modesto trabajo académico sobre Edgar Allan Poe publicado en el Sheffield Gothic Reading Group.

Sheffield Gothic es un grupo de postgrado de la Universidad de Sheffield, Inglaterra, dedicado al estudio de temas góticos, bien sean clásicos o contemporáneos. Desde hace tiempo quería asumir el reto de trabajar en esta posibilidad, ver qué salia de ello, ¡y henos aquí, ya con el primer guest blog! Este se titula Asuntos de inmortalidad y muerte en “La verdad sobre el caso del señor Valdemar", y les comparto la traducción al español al final de esta entrada, ¡pero den clic aquí para leer el original en inglés!

También me alegra decirles que fueron aprobados otros dos trabajos sobre Poe, en los cuales ya estoy sumergido. Pronto verán la luz igual que el primogénito, ¡así que atentos!
Aprovecho para recordarles que no despeguen el ojo de mi perfil en Wattpad. Ya la próxima semana estaré publicando Sello de los Gatos, primero en inglés y más adelante en español. Cuando se piensa sobre el tema, uno no puede evitar preguntarse si la muerte es realmente el fin de la existencia, la última etapa de nuestros cuerpos humanos, o si podría ser posible jugar con ella y hacerla obedecer nuestras propias reglas cuando queramos. La humanidad ha roto tantos límites curando enfermedades que solían ser mortales, desarrollando procedimientos médicos que eran impensables en el pasado e incluso creando vida en laboratorios que parece razonable darle a esta posibilidad un espacio momentáneo en nuestros pensamientos.

Yendo más lejos y siendo más aventuraros, ¿podría esto tener lugar al momento justo de la partida? Podría ser una idea atractiva, puesto que “la muerte es todavía un acontecimiento aterrador y atemorizador, y el miedo a la muerte es un temor universal incluso si pensamos que lo hemos dominado en muchos niveles”. (Kübler-Ross, 2009: p. 4.) Ciertamente empoderaría a la raza humana tener control absoluto sobre su existencia, incluido el final de la misma.

Con una mirada atenta, los lectores pueden descubrir, si no ya, que el escritor estadounidense Edgar Allan Poe pareció pensarlo, presentando este mismo pensamiento en una de sus historias, ya sea intencionalmente o no. Dado el hecho de que “Estados Unidos se caracteriza comúnmente como una sociedad que niega la muerte” (Durkin, 2018: p. 48), veo esto como un panorama irónico.

Encontrar tal tema es difícilmente sorprendente después de que nos damos cuenta de que “la literatura a veces ayuda a las personas a resolver los problemas espirituales de la muerte. Puede ser tanto objetivo como personal y puede inspirar” (Skelton, 2003: p. 218). También nos gustaría considerar que “una de las cosas centrales de las que la literatura puede hacernos más conscientes es que la muerte significa diferente cosas en diferentes momentos” (Skelton, 2003: p. 211) a medida que avanzamos en esta propuesta de la muerte siendo controlada por humanos.

En "La verdad sobre el caso del señor Valdemar", Poe rompe las reglas de la Madre Naturaleza al mantener a un hombre completamente consciente y aún en el reino de los vivos después de que muere, y también lo obliga a confesar que "'¡Por el amor de Dios!' ¡rápido! ¡Rápido! ¡Pónganme a dormir! ¡O, rápido! ¡Despiértenme! ¡Rápido! ¡Les digo que estoy muerto!'" Poe, 1944: p. 7).

En la historia, Poe "erosiona así las partes límites del aparato fisiológico hasta el punto en que ese aparato o cuerpo se colapsa en el material abyecto mismo' (Sutherland, 2004: p. 3). Al hacer esto, altera lo que es comúnmente entendido como un estado viviente, un aspecto que se vuelve aún más notorio cuando Valdermar habla después de ser convertido en esta extraña criatura no-muerta.

Por medios médicos, o por mesmerismo, para ser más específico, el narrador anónimo crea un nuevo tipo de zombi que solo es capaz de hablar en ciertos momentos de la historia; congelado en el tiempo, se encuentra atrapado en ese estado antinatural. Sin embargo, esta misma criatura no puede moverse, comer ni realizar ninguna otra actividad que los seres vivos sean capaces de hacer, lo que nos da la pista de que no está completamente muerto a pesar de que tampoco está vivo.

Es en este limbo donde Valdemar finalmente encuentra un descanso cuando '"todo su cuerpo a la vez, en el espacio de un minuto, o incluso menos, se encogió, se desmoronó, se pudrió absolutamente bajo mis manos. Sobre la cama, ante toda esa compañía, yacía una masa casi líquida de repugnante y detestable putrefacción" (Poe, 1944: p. 7).

Después de un resultado tan antinatural, tal vez con aún más razón puesto que Valdemar aceptó participar en el experimento del narrador no identificado, parece obvio que su muerte no sería pacífica o tranquila, sino brutal, gráfica y descrita con detalles sangrientos. Esto es especialmente relevante cuando consideramos su contraste con el uso típico de Poe del tema de la muerte de una mujer hermosa, que incluyó en muchas de sus historias (Elmer, 1995).

Aunque esto puede no ser considerado como un caso de inmortalidad para algunos, ciertamente es un ejemplo temprano de lo que significaba ser inmortal para la sociedad estadounidense durante el tiempo de Poe: antinatural, lejos de ser permisible y un estado peligroso, temible que debe evitarse, al igual que la muerte. También es innegable el hecho de que ha presentado la transformación de un ser humano común en otra cosa que parece desligada de las limitaciones de ser una entidad mortal.

Lo que es aún más interesante de esta historia no es solo el hecho de que la muerte parece detenerse por un simple humano, bien versado en asuntos médicos, por supuesto, pero humano no obstante, sino que lo hizo durante siete meses, como se especifica en el cuento. Esto lleva a concluir que, además de ser posible alcanzar estados de conciencia alternativos, los métodos médicos también tienen la capacidad de controlar los efectos de la muerte en el cuerpo y la mente humanos.

La idea no está lejos de la realidad siempre que consideremos que:

Si las experiencias descritas son reales, tal vez las estrategias que se utilizaron en este trabajo literario, o que se sugieren a través de su ausencia, puedan ser efectivas en la situación de su paciente (o incluso en la suya propia). La literatura, o 'las humanidades', puede mejorar la buena práctica en medicina. (Skelton, 2003: p 218.)

Sin embargo, me gustaría señalar el hecho de que este no es un panorama atractivo, hasta donde yo lo veo, si tenemos en cuenta los resultados que el memorable Victor Frankenstein de Mary Shelly logró después de crear su monstruo, el producto de sus largos experimentos de tiempo con cadáveres. Hutchisson (2005) sugiere esta misma idea cuando habla de la historia de Valdemar, afirmando que los intentos de controlar el curso natural de la muerte en la vida humana no tendrían éxito, un punto de vista ya mencionado en este artículo.

Por otro lado, y si seguimos pensando de manera optimista, esto podría significar que la muerte puede dominarse y controlarse con éxito una vez que la cantidad correcta de investigación, experimentos y conocimiento se hayan gastado para este propósito, porque "aunque los seres humanos poseen cuerpos mortales, siempre han anhelado la inmortalidad" (Weiner & Meskimen, 2010: p. 1961). Solo necesitamos que alguien haga el primer intento en el mundo real para ver cuán posible podría ser poner fin a la muerte, por irónico que suene.

Musical Friday / Viernes Musicales: Demons (New Zone)

Hello everyone!

This week was nuts, insane, crazy, you name it and I will most likely agree with you. During these days, there was a song that helped me to deal with the high levels of stress: Demons, by New Zone.

The lyrics are direct, with that dark feeling I couldn't help but identify myself with, powerful rock music combined with the voice as powerful and epic of Nicole Willerton. I missed this simpler kind of music, the same as when Evanescence released their first album.

It's a shame that there is not so much material from these guys, but so far, they are doing a good job and have a solid idea about the kind of sound they want and which kind of band they are becoming. Definitely worth keeping an eye on these people!

Esta semana fue demente, una locura, un disparate, ustedes nombren alguna palabra y lo más probable es que esté de acuerdo con ustedes. Durante estos días, hubo una canción que me ayudó a lidiar con los altos niveles de estrés: Demons, por New Zone.
Las letras son directas, con ese sentimiento oscuro con el que no pude evitar identificarme con la poderosa música rock combinada con la voz igual de poderosa y épica de Nicole Willerton. Extrañaba este tipo de música más sencilla, la misma que cuando Evanescence lanzó su primer álbum.
Es una lástima que no haya tanto material de estos chicos, pero hasta ahora, están haciendo un buen trabajo y tienen una idea sólida sobre el tipo de sonido que quieren y en qué tipo de banda se están convirtiendo. ¡Definitivamente vale la pena vigilar a esta gente!

Thinking: Finding a catalyst / Pensando: Encontrando un catalizador

Hey there people, how have you been?
I’ve been writing like a mad guy these days so far, something I hope I can keep (seems like I will, cross your fingers!) and decided to share with you something unusual. As writers, we all need something to inspire us. A song, a movie, a phrase, a quote, anything that puts our mind in a creative mode.
However, sometimes I struggled with the muse. There was the idea, the marvel, the magic, but the will was missing, the desire to work wasn’t there, and not because I didn’t want it to become real, but because something was wrong.

Inspiration is the desire to create and make something real, but a catalyst is what makes your fingers work, something that switches on your will and puts the need into motion. That was the one thing that I had been missing most of the time.

I was struggling with Cats’ Seal (didn’t you see the trailer?) these days because Helena and the rest of the characters didn’t want me to write about them, the blog was far away from my mind after I scheduled some entries and I felt I was falling again on that vicious cycle. Things changed when I re-watched the TV documentary “J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life.”

The sound of that keyboard working, the hands moving at such a speed, not only once, but twice during the documentary, gave me exactly was I was needed. I could complete the chapter i had to in no time, and did the same the next day, just listening to certain segments and those with the keyboard sounds.

Even now, as I write this, I’m listening to a video solely with those sounds. You know what? I love it! I don’t know why exactly keyboard, maybe just because that’s what I want to hear, maybe I feel productive or maybe I’m just competitive and want to type faster than what I’m listening to, but it works, it completely works, and that’s enough for me.

For those writer who are out there, try searching for your catalyst when a book becomes hard to work with. Heaven knows this was not the first time I looked at the screen with a blank page feeling dump, but this was the final solution. What do you think about this? Let me know down there!

Hola gente, ¿cómo han estado?
He estado escribiendo como un tipo loco estos días hasta ahora, algo que espero poder cumplir (parece que lo haré, crucen los dedos!) y decidí compartir con ustedes algo inusual. Como escritores, todos necesitamos algo para inspirarnos. Una canción, una película, una frase, una cita, cualquier cosa que ponga nuestra mente en un modo creativo.
Sin embargo, a veces luché con la musa. Tenía la idea, la maravilla, la magia, pero faltaba el deseo, las ganas de trabajar no estaban allí, y no porque no quisiera que se volviera real, sino porque algo andaba mal.
La inspiración es el deseo de crear y hacer algo real, pero un catalizador es lo que hace que tus dedos funcionen, algo que enciende tu voluntad y pone la necesidad en movimiento. Esa era la única cosa que me estaba haciendo falta la mayor parte del tiempo.
Estaba luchando con Cats 'Seal (¿no han visto el trailer?) en estos días porque Helena y el resto de los personajes no querían que escribiera sobre ellos, el blog estaba muy lejos de mi mente después de programar algunas entradas y sentí que estaba cayendo de nuevo en ese círculo vicioso. Las cosas cambiaron cuando volví a ver el documental de televisión "J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life".
El sonido de ese teclado funcionando, las manos moviéndose a esa velocidad, no solo una, sino dos veces durante el documental, me dieron exactamente era que me necesitaban. Pude completar el capítulo que tenía que hacer en nada de tiempo, e hice lo mismo al día siguiente, solo escuchando ciertos segmentos y aquellos con los sonidos del teclado.
Incluso ahora, mientras escribo esto, estoy escuchando un video únicamente con esos sonidos. ¿Saben que? ¡Lo amo! No sé exactamente por qué el teclado, tal vez porque eso es lo que quiero escuchar, tal vez me siento productivo o tal vez solo soy competitivo y quiero escribir más rápido que lo que estoy escuchando, pero funciona, funciona completamente y eso es suficiente para mí.
Para aquellos escritores que están por ahí, intenten buscar su catalizador cuando sea difícil trabajar con un libro. El cielo sabe que esta no fue la primera vez que miré la pantalla con una página en blanco sintiéndome estúpido, pero esta era la solución final. ¿Qué piensan sobre esto? ¡Déjenme saber allí abajo!

Rant Alert: When they call you "this" / Alterta: Cuando te llaman "esto"

There are ups and downs in the life of an author, there are good times and those we prefer not to remember at all. It’s no news we will get negatives and that we will be rejected before someone believes in us and our work. However, there’s a line that should never be crossed when writing negatives: calling “this” the story of a writer.

Maybe I’m exaggerating and making a storm in a glass of water, but I had to write this after I received the following message from a magazine to which I submitted a short story: “Alan, this is just not a good fit for us. Good luck with this elsewhere.”

As writers, and I suppose editors know this as well, there is power in words and the way we express ourselves, there is a feeling the other person will get when s/he read the message, the letter, the novel or anything you may have written to them. By calling “this” my story gave me the impression these people were disparaging my work regardless of whether it was or not it was the style they wanted for their magazine.

There have been publishers I’ve touched more than once, because despite there was no luck the first time, they responded, they wrote back, they took the time to use nice words, because it doesn’t matter what you’re saying, but how you say it. My mother told me that over and over again, and this is one of those times when I see how right she is.

Of course I will not submit anything else to these guys, of course I will not even read the magazine. It looked interesting, there seems to be something good in there and their covers are awesome, truth be told, but if I’m such a little thing for them, then so is my work.

People, doesn’t matter if you’re a writer or not, if what you’re putting your passion in is just turned down this way or if you feel bad because of anything other people said and that could have been said in a better way, then just forget about them and move on. This rant is my catharsis, my way to process the feelings. You do the same if this ever happens to you, and never ever let anyone make you feel bad for being this and not what others are searching for. You rock, always.

Hay altibajos en la vida de un autor, hay buenos momentos y aquellos que preferimos no recordar en absoluto. No es noticia que obtendremos negativas y que seremos rechazados antes de que alguien crea en nosotros y en nuestro trabajo. Sin embargo, hay una línea que nunca se debe cruzar cuando se escriben negativas: llamar "esto" a la historia de un escritor.

Tal vez estoy exagerando y haciendo una tormenta en un vaso de agua, pero tuve que escribir esto después de recibir el siguiente mensaje de una revista a la que presenté una breve historia: "Alan, esto no es una buena opción para nosotros . Buena suerte con esto en otro lugar".

Como escritores, y supongo que los editores también lo saben, hay poder en las palabras y en la forma en que nos expresamos, hay un sentimiento que la otra persona tendrá cuando lea el mensaje, la carta, la novela o cualquier cosa que hayas escrito a los demás. Con llamar "esto" a mi historia me dio la impresión de que estas personas estaban menospreciando mi trabajo, independientemente de si era o no el estilo que querían para su revista.

Hay editores a los que he tocado más de una vez, porque a pesar de que no hubo suerte la primera vez, respondieron, escribieron de vuelta, se tomaron el tiempo para usar palabras bonitas, porque no importa lo que digas, sino cómo lo dices. Mi madre me lo dijo una y otra vez, y esta es una de esas ocasiones en las que veo lo correcta que está.

Por supuesto, no enviaré nada más a estos tipos, por supuesto que ni siquiera leeré la revista. Parecía interesante, parece que hay algo bueno allí y sus portadas son increíbles, dicha sea la verdad, pero si soy tan poca cosa para ellos, entonces también lo es mi trabajo.

Gente, no importa si son escritores o no, si a lo que le ponen pasión acaba de ser rechazado de esta manera o si se sienten mal por cualquier cosa que digan otras personas y que podría haberse dicho de una mejor manera, entonces solo olvídense de ellos y sigan adelante. Esta diatriba es mi catarsis, mi forma de procesar los sentimientos. Hagan lo mismo si esto les sucede alguna vez, y nunca permitan que nadie les haga sentir mal por ser esto y no lo que los otros están buscando. Son increíbles, siempre.

Despite this week was a little calmer than I expected it to be, I'm always happy when Friday arrives. It means music, reading, writing, weekend!

Today I want to share with you my newest discovery, a gothic album I'm in love with and that I cannot stop listening to. I'm speaking about the self-titled album of Blacklisted Me, which I find incredible in more than a single sense.

I came across this album by mere chance, and man it surprised me more than I thought. This girl combines rock and electronic music with her sweet, delicate voice. You all know I'm not a fan of the girlish style when it comes to vocals, I want them to be powerful, noisy, capable of the most high notes, but there's something in Lexus Amanda's that I cannot dislike it.

My personal favorite, that one track I listen to over and over again, is an almost-hymn track titled "Freak Like Me." It's ridiculously sticky! The lyrics are not that remarkable, but they serve their purpose and that's enough for me.

I want to make it clear that there was no way I could find the real tracklist, as every site and page had a different version. I didn't listen to them all, to be honest, but this one I'm sharing seems very solid and complete as far as I can see. However, feel free to search for another one if you prefer.

A pesar de que esta semana fue un poco más tranquila de lo que esperaba, siempre estoy contento cuando llegue el viernes. ¡Significa música, lectura, escritura, fin de semana!

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes mi último descubrimiento, un álbum gótico del que estoy enamorado y que no puedo dejar de escuchar. Estoy hablando del álbum homónimo de Blacklisted Me, que me parece increíble en más de un sentido.

Me encontré con este álbum por pura casualidad, y me sorprendió más de lo que pensaba. Esta chica combina el rock y la música electrónica con su dulce y delicada voz. Saben que no soy fanático del estilo de niña en lo que respecta a la voz, quiero que sean poderosas, ruidosas, capaces de las notas más altas, pero hay algo en la de Lexus Amanda que no me desagrada.

Mi favorito personal, ese tema que escucho una y otra vez, es un casi himno titulado "Freak Like Me". ¡Es ridículamente pegajoso! La letra no son tan notables, pero sirve a su propósito y eso es suficiente para mí.

Quiero dejar en claro que no había forma de que pudiera encontrar la lista de canciones real, ya que cada sitio y página tenían una versión diferente. No los escuché a todos, para ser honesto, pero este que estoy compartiendo parece muy sólido y completo por lo que puedo ver. Sin embargo, siéntanse libres de buscar otro si lo prefieren.
