Venus es un personaje con el que te identificas fácilmente si formas parte de una minoría, un sector de la población poco representado, no sólo por sus vivencias, sino también por sus sentimientos. Llegas a conocerla hasta tal punto que sientes que eres tú quien está luchando contra el sistema corrupto, haciendo las paces y salvando a tu familia junto con el país.

Mi única queja es que el aspecto del trauma generacional no fue tan explorado como quería. Llegó un momento en el que todo empezó a solucionarse muy rápido, sin más explicaciones. Pude ver hacia dónde se dirigía Venus, cómo cambió su comprensión de su familia, cuando de repente hizo las paces.

Sin embargo, no pude pasar las páginas lo suficientemente rápido. The Poisons We Drink es uno de esos libros que se construyen lentamente y te mantienen intrigado, inmerso en un mundo tan fascinante como peligroso. El sistema mágico, aunque simple, es seductor, junto con todo el elenco, especialmente Presly, Janus y Patches, mi favorito personal. Bethany Baptiste sabe lo que hace, cómo escribir una excelente historia, manteniéndose lejos de los finales predecibles.

There’s a lot going on in this book! There’s political intrigue and corruption, trauma, relationships, family drama, transgenerational trauma, and don’t get me started on the fantasy elements! Just reading the synopsis was enough to get me excited. It’s one of those books that surprise you repeatedly.

Venus is a character that you easily relate to if you’re part of a minority, an underrepresented sector of the population, not only because of her experiences, but also because of her feelings. You get to know her to such a degree it feels like it’s you who’s fighting the corrupt system, making amends, and saving your family along with the country.

My only complaint is that the generational trauma aspect of it wasn’t as explored as I wanted it. There was a point when it all started to get solved so quickly, with no further explanation. I could see where Venus was headed, how her understanding of her family changed, when all of a sudden, she made amends.

However, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The Poisons We Drink is one of those books that build up slowly, keeping you intrigued, immersed in a world as fascinating as it is dangerous. The magical system, while simple, is seductive, along with the whole cast, especially Presly, Janus, and Patches, my personal favorite. Bethany Baptiste knows what she's doing, how to write a great story, staying away from predictable endings.

Este año me propuse leer historias más diversas, con más representación, diferentes autores, diferentes culturas, para crecer como escritor, lector, y persona. Tuve algunas dudas cuando vi este libro porque he tenido muy malas experiencias con escirtores latinos. Sin embargo, terminó siendo uno de mis favoritos del año pasado: Relit: 16 Latinx Remixes of Classic Stories, editado por Sandra Proudman. ¡Gracias a Under the Umbrella Bookstore por permitirme leer este ARC!

Hacía mucho tiempo que no leía nada latino, así que no lo pensé dos veces cuando tuve este bebé. El equilibrio perfecto entre fantasía, ciencia ficción e incluso un poco de terror fue el principal atractivo a la hora de leer. Incluso incluiría realismo mágico y fantasía científica en algunos casos, porque también hay mucha experimentación entre géneros, formatos y estilos. ¡Es tan diverso que es un placer leerlo!

Es difícil elegir favoritos, pero diría que Mónica Sanz, Amparo Ortiz, Zoraida Córdova, Jasminne Méndez y David Bowles hicieron el mejor trabajo con sus historias. La mejor parte es que no necesitas conocer los clásicos en cuestión para disfrutar de los remixes; de hecho, es posible que incluso les despierten curiosidad por las versiones originales, ¡como la que tengo ahora con respecto a Jane Eyre!

En todas las antologías aparece el mismo comentario de que no te gustan todas las historias. Sin embargo, hay algunas historias que sentí que estaban poco desarrolladas, especialmente una que pareció cortada abruptamente, muy de repente, sin un final claro. No me malinterpreten, hubo algunos finales abiertos que me encantaron, pero ese no fue el que esperaba. También hubo un relato en particular que no me sentó bien.

Considerándolo todo, es un libro hermoso que me hizo soñar, sonreír, tener esperanza y desear vivir algo, si no lo mismo, lo suficientemente parecido. Hay mucho romance, pero también aventuras, drama, adolescencia, etc.; el buen cliché de "hay para todos los gustos", y mentiríamos si dijéramos que eso no nos gusta. ¡No puedo esperar a que lean esto!

It's been a long time since I read anything Latin, so I didn't think twice when I got this baby. The perfect balance between fantasy, sci-fi, and even a bit of horror, was the main attractive when I was reading. I would even include magical realism and science fantasy in a few cases, because there's also a lot of experimentation between genres, formats, and styles. It's so diverse it's a pleasure to read!

It's hard to pick favorites, but I'd say that Monica Sanz, Amparo Ortiz, Zoraida Córdova, Jasminne Mendez, and David Bowles did the best job with their stories. The best part is that you don't need to know the classics in question in order to enjoy the remixes, in fact, they might even make you curious about the original versions, such as I am now regarding Jane Eyre!

There's the same old comment in every anthology that you don't like all the stories. However, there are a few stories I felt were underdeveloped, especially one that seemed cut abruptly all of a sudden with no clear ending. Don't get me wrong, there were some open endings that I loved, but that one wasn't what I expected. There was also one story in particular that didn't sit right in there for me.

All in all, it's a beautiful book that made me dream, smile, hope, and wish to live something, if not the same, close enough. There's a lot of romance, but also adventure, drama, coming of age, and so on; the good cliché of "there's something for everyone", and we'd be lying if we said we don't like that. I can't wait for you to read this!

Manga: Boyfriends Vol. 1

¡Primera reseña del año! Sin embargo, esto debería considerarse trampa ya que leí este libro a finales del año pasado. Oh bueno. Voy a salir un poco de mi zona de confort para contarles sobre un cómic que no esperaba que me gustara TANTO. O, para ser precisos, un webcómic. Es dulce, lindo, adorable y tiene una saludable dosis de comedia para comenzar bien este 2024: hablo de Boyfriends Volume One, por refrainbow.

¡Chico conoce chico... conoce chico.... conoce chico!

Jock, Goth, Nerd y Prep son todos estudiantes de tercer año en la universidad. Pero estudiar es lo último que tienen en mente, ya que lo que más les interesa es conseguir un novio. O varios novios.

Los dos primeros en unirse son Goth (cool y sexy) y Nerd (burbujeante y coqueto). A medida que su incipiente relación se profundiza, no pueden negar su química con los otros amigos de Goth, Jock (dulce y tolerante) y Prep (sensible y ansioso). Nerd sugiere que prueben algo totalmente nuevo para todos en una relación poliamorosa. Me llamó mucho la atención que este fuese un romance poliamoroso. He visto que algunas personas usan esto simplemente para incluir sexo, pero Boyfriends es totalmente diferente: es una historia sana, apta para todo público, que te hace reír en cuestión de segundos. Aunque no leo comedia, este libro pudo conmigo y lo terminé en una sentada.

El arte también es adorable, como si estuviera viendo un anime de mi infancia pero con temas actuales, más serios, pero sin perder el toque de inocencia que lo caracteriza. Diría incluso que los colores son mi parte favorita, tonos suaves y pasteles que le dan un aire aún más dulce a las escenas. Hay algunas que son un poco más serias, pero podría contarlas con los dedos de las manos.

Siendo honesto, sí esperaba más desarrollo y más tensión en la relación entre estos cuatro. Siendo la primera relación poliamorosa de cada uno, lo llevan con bastante madurez, bastante calma, al punto de que es perfecto. No me malinterpreten, me encanta que sea todo muy bonito, pero sí esperaba más conflictos, inseguridades, y demás.

En líneas generales, es una historia preciosa para desconectarse de la vida diaria, atreverse a ver las cosas desde otro punto de vista, sin deternerse a pensar mundo en los detalles. Inocente y divertida, este primer volúmen me hizo fan casi de inmediato: ya lo estoy leyendo en Webtoons directamente. Solo espero que se vuelva un poco más realista.

First review of the year! However, this should be considered cheating since I read this book at the end of last year. Oh, well. I'm gonna get out of my comfort zone for a bit and tell about a comic I didn't expect to like THIS much. Or, to be precise, a webcomic. It's sweet, it's cute, it's adorable, and has a healthy dose of comedy to start off the right way this 2024: I'm speaking about Boyfriends Volume One, by refrainbow.

Boy meets boy... meets boy... meets boy!

Jock, Goth, Nerd, and Prep are all juniors in college. But studying is the last thing on their minds as they are mainly interested in getting a boyfriend. Or multiple boyfriends.

The first two to couple up are Goth (cool and sexy) and Nerd (bubbly and flirty). As their budding relationship deepens, they can’t deny their chemistry with Goth’s other friends, Jock (sweet and easygoing) and Prep (sensitive and anxious). Nerd suggests they try something totally brand new to all of a polyamorous relationship. Everyone’s game to try, because they all agree the only thing better than one cute boyfriend…is three cute boyfriends!

But the transition isn’t so smooth, as Jock and Prep have issues of their own to settle, and all four need to learn how to make their new polycule work. Through navigating the adventures of dating life, the boyfriends come to understand themselves and each other in new and profound ways.

Laugh-out-loud funny and always heartwarming, Boyfriends is filled to the brim with moments of pride big and small.

I was very struck by the fact that this was a polyamorous romance. I've seen some people use this simply to include sex, but Boyfriends is totally different: it's a healthy story, suitable for all audiences, that makes you laugh in a matter of seconds. Although I don't read comedy, this book got the better of me and I finished it in one sitting.

The art is also adorable, as if I were watching an anime from my childhood but with current, more serious themes, but without losing the touch of innocence that characterizes it. I would even say that the colors are my favorite part, soft and pastel tones that give an even sweeter air to the scenes. There are some that are a little more serious, but I could count them on my hands.

To be honest, I did expect more development and more tension in the relationship between these four. Being their first polyamorous relationship, they handle it quite maturely, quite calmly, to the point that it's perfect. Don't get me wrong, I love that everything is very nice, but I did expect more conflicts, insecurities, and so on.

In general terms, it's a beautiful story to disconnect from daily life, dare to see things from another point of view, without stopping to think about the details. Innocent and fun, this first volume made me a fan almost immediately: I'm already reading it directly on Webtoons. I just hope it gets a little more realistic.

2024: Una carta abierta / An Open Letter

¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

Quería alejarme de Internet y las redes sociales por un tiempo, centrándome principalmente en la vida real, viviendo al aire libre, experimentando algo más que la pantalla. Aunque la AMO, y amo crear mis historias, este ha sido un descanso muy necesario. Empecé a pasar más tiempo con quienes están cerca de mí, a hacer las cosas que me gustan, y a darme tiempo para recuperarme de varias cosas que sucedieron en 2023.

Siempre he sido transparente con respecto a mi salud mental. No lo haría de otra manera. Aunque formé parte de un grupo de escritura, un club de lectura, y conocí a mucha gente hermosa, hubo varios momentos en los que quise renunciar a todo. Comencé tratamiento psiquiátrico, lidié con los efectos secundarios, me acostumbré a mi nuevo yo, comencé a cuidarme mejor, y ya puedo ver los resultados.

2023 fue un año muy emotivo para mí. No puedo contar cuántas veces lloré y cuántas veces perdí el control. Literalmente. Entre ataques de pánico, ansiedad, autolesiones, depresión y pensamientos suicidas, hasta el punto de tener hemorragias nasales que me horrorizaron, me sorprende que ese fuera yo. Ni siquiera escribir ofrecía el mismo consuelo que antes.

Quiero que este año sea diferente. Llevo mucho tiempo curándome, los frutos ya están saliendo, pero quiero vivir de una vez.

Es temprano en la mañana mientras escribo esto, todos están dormidos y probablemente volveré a la cama dentro de un rato. Sin embargo, quería pasar un tiempo así. Sólo yo. Mis palabras. Mi mundo. Recordar por qué hago lo que hago, y animarlos a hacer lo mismo.

Mi cabeza está llena de ideas, porque todos sabemos que siempre apunto demasiado alto y espero mucho de mí mismo, a veces incluso más allá de lo razonable, pero me cuidaré ante todo. Hay varias cosas que quiero lograr este año: publicar de nuevo, encontrar editorial, seguir escribiendo, probar cosas nuevas, pero seré más privado que antes.

Para todos aquellos que han leído esto, GRACIAS. Sé que es un cliché usado en exceso decir que significa mucho para mí, así que simplemente diré (piensa en algo inteligente; falla) que significa mucho. Me siento más seguro en muchas cosas, así que espero que este sea el comienzo de algo nuevo.

Happy New Year!

I wanted to stay away from the internet and social media for a bit, focusing mostly on real life, living outside, experiencing more than just the screen. Even though I LOVE it, and I love to create my stories, this has been a much-needed rest. I started spending more time with those who are close to me, doing the things I like, and giving myself time to heal from several things that happened in 2023.

I've always been transparent regarding my mental health. I wouldn't have it any other way. Even though I became part of a writing group, a book club, and met lots of beautiful people, there were several points when I wanted to give up on everything. I started psychiatric treatment, dealt with the secondary effects, got used to a new me, started taking better care of myself, and I can already see the results.

2023 was a very emotional year for me. I can't possibly count how many times I cried and how many times I lost it. Literally. Between panic attacks, anxiety, self-harming, depression, and suicidal thoughts, to the point of getting nosebleeds that horrified me, it surprises me that that was me. Even writing didn't offer the same solace as it did before.

I want this year to be different. I've been healing for a long time, the fruits are already coming out, but I want to live for once.

It's early morning as I write this, everyone is asleep, and I'm probably going back to bed in a while. However, I wanted to spend some time like this. Just me. My words. My world. Remember why I do what I do, and encourage you to do the same.

My head is bubbling with ideas, because we all know I always aim too high and expect a lot from myself, sometimes even beyond reason, but first and foremost I will be taking care of myself. There are several things I want to accomplish this year: publish again, find a publisher, keep writing, try new things, but I'll become more private than before.

For all of those who've read this much, THANK YOU. I know it's an overused cliché to say that it means a lot to me, so I'll just say (thinks of something clever; fails) it means a lot. I feel more confident about a lot of stuff, so hopefully this will be the start of something new.
