I started Margaret Atwood’s Masterclass yesterday. I still have several lessons to go, and while some points don’t surprise me, others, obvious as they may seem, have really given me something to think about. One of these comes up in the early lessons: immersing yourself in what matters to you before you start writing.
Beyond the Day-to-Day

I've had very few chances to think about anything else because almost everything has been responsibility and survival and responsibility and survival. It has mostly been a matter of just trying to keep breathing, especially during the time when I couldn’t even talk about my books due to my immigration status.
After hearing Margaret speak on this, and after reading three books to my baby, I found myself reflecting deeply. What am I immersing myself in? What is nourishing my creativity? What am I surrounding myself with? Certainly, there’s plenty of stories, folklore, and witchcraft, but beyond that? Very little.
The Soul Needs Sustenance
I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to break a few cycles. I need money, yes, but not at the expense of my soul. A long time ago, I made a promise to myself: I wouldn’t sell my soul for any goal, and certainly not to the devil, but rather, I would sell it to myself. And that means more than just writing; it means nurturing.
One of the things I’ve learned through witchcraft is that the soul, too, requires sustenance. That is where my problem lies, and I suspect it’s a problem shared by many in today’s world. At the risk of getting too philosophical, we focus so much on what we need to survive that we end up forgetting what nourishes us, what truly fulfills us.
I am working on this, seeking out what nourishes and fulfills me beyond my daily responsibilities. Being a father fulfills me, so does my work at a law firm, my spiritual practice, and my family, yet all of this is conditional, dependent on other things and other people. My stories fulfill me in different ways, but I haven’t given them the nourishment they deserve.
Different
I'm doing the internal work required here, and in the process, I may need to change quite a few things. It’s possible that more than one post will be… different. Different how, I don’t know yet, but it feels good to write about something beyond reviews. It feels good to think about something else. I’m not sure exactly what this difference will look like, but I hope you’ll stick with me as I figure it out.
