¡Feliz Orgullo! / Happy Pride!

¡Feliz Mes del Orgullo, Nocturnos! Todos los días del año son buenos para celebrar ser quienes somos, celebrar que seamos diferentes, que somos un mundo diverso, pero junio es especial. Junio es el momento perfecto para hacerlo y recordarle a los demás que todos merecemos amar y ser amados.

La semana pasada fue bastante intensa, y esta tiene pinta de ser igual, pero ya se siente un aire de celebración en el aire. Veo a la gente más feliz, más animada, colores por todos lados, y ni se diga de las redes sociales. ¡Parece una fiesta constante!

Hay quienes no entienden por qué orgullo, por qué celebrar algo como el hecho de amar a alguien, y este es el mes perfecto para recordarles que el ser heterosexual da privilegios que les han sido negados al colectivo queer. Nadie te golpea, se burla de ti, te insultan, te ataca en las calles, te mira raro, te dice que das asco si eres heterosexual, ni hace leyes que te pongan en peligro. Si eres queer, la historia cambia.

Junio es el mes para recordar que hemos avanzado como sociedad, que hay más derechos, que hay más respeto, más educación y aceptación, pero que aún queda trabajo por hacer. Es el mes para celebrar lo que se ha logrado, celebrar que cada vez más personas se sienten seguras al ser quienes son, que hay más recursos.

Les juro que es más pesada de lo que parece.

El domingo 4 de junio me ofrecí como voluntario en mi universidad para apoyar durante la marcha, y literalmente fue una fiesta de principio a fin. Música, bailes, gritos, gente de todo tipo, y todas las caras sonriendo o riendo. No sabía qué esperar, pero aunque terminé cansado, también feliz de haber ayudado.

De eso se trata junio, de ayudar y ser parte de un cambio.

Happy Pride Month, Nightlies! Every day of the year is good to celebrate who we are, to celebrate that we are different, that we are a diverse world, but June is special. June is the perfect time to do it and remind others that we all deserve to love and be loved.

Last week was pretty intense, and this one looks the same, but there's already an air of celebration in the air. I see people happier, more animated, colors everywhere, and not to mention social networks. It seems like a constant party!

There are those who don't understand why pride, why celebrate something like loving someone, and this is the perfect month to remind them that being straight gives privileges that have been denied to the queer collective. Nobody hits you, makes fun of you, insults you, attacks you in the streets, looks at you weird, tells you that you're disgusting if you are straight, or make laws that put you in danger. If you are queer, the story changes.

June's the month to remember that we've advanced as a society, that there are more rights, that there's more respect, more education and acceptance, but that there's still work to be done. It's the month to celebrate what's been achieved, to celebrate that more and more people feel safe being who they are, that there are more resources.

On Sunday June 4th I volunteered at my college to support the parade, and it was literally a party from start to finish. Music, dances, shouts, people of all kinds, and all the faces smiling or laughing. I didn't know what to expect, but even though I ended up tired, I was also happy to have helped.

That's what June is all about, helping and being part of a change.
