Manga: My Love Mix-Up! (Serie)

Hay una serie que me dejó con la boca abierta. La empecé a leer hace poco, pero no estaba preparado para lo que se venía tomo tras tomo. Además, ya saben que los romances del bachillerato son mi debilidad. Resulta ser que me volví fanático de My Love Mix-Up! de Wataru Hinekure y Aruko.

• Sinopsis del primer volumen:

Aoki está enamorado de Hashimoto, la chica que está sentada a su lado en clase. Pero se desespera cuando le pide prestado el borrador y ve que tiene escrito el nombre de otro chico, Ida, en él. Para hacer las cosas más confusas, Ida ve a Aoki sosteniendo ese mismo borrador y piensa que Aoki está enamorado de él.

Tuve mis dudas al respecto de esta serie. La premisa no me parecía del todo interesante, pero decidí darle una oportunidad. No me di cuenta de que había devorado el primer volumen hasta que llegué a la última página. Nueva adicción desbloqueada. Estuve metido en esta serie por un buen tiempo porque no pude parar desde el primer momento, y esperé con ansias el último para saber qué pasaba finalmente. ¡No decepciona en ningún momento!

Es una historia muy bien trabajado y que juega con el lector varias veces, pero mostrando la realidad de una manera más ligera, la confusión, el descubrimiento de la identidad, y el miedo a lo que suceda en el futuro. Más que un romance, es una historia que muestra a los personajes creciendo, madurando, sin perder esa inocencia juvenil.

Está de más que diga que el arte me encantó. Las expresiones y gestos de los personajes se vuelven el centro puesto que los fondos son bastante sencillos, si es que hay fondos, dicha sea la verdad. Es uno de esos casos en los que el guión y el arte se complementan perfectamente, dando una armonía que pocas veces he visto. Mis respetos por ello.

Debería ser un crimen que el trabajo de tres años se pueda leer en un mes, porque literalmente me tomó uno o dos días leer cada tomo (hasta que tocó esperar el último). Sin embargo, Aoki, Ida, Hashimoto, y Aida se quedan contigo por un buen rato luego de terminar. Se me hace difícil pensar en una serie que supere a esta. Es un drama juvenil difícil de superar (Sí, es contigo, Ao No Flag; ese último volumen arruinó TODA la serie para mí; entre otras cosas).

There's a series that left me speechless. I started reading it recently, but I wasn't prepared for what was coming volume after volume. Plus, you already know that high school romances are my weakness. Turns out, I became a fan of My Love Mix-Up! by Wataru Hinekure and Aruko.

• Synopsis of the first volume:

Aoki has a crush on Hashimoto, the girl in the seat next to him in class. But he despairs when he borrows her eraser and sees she’s written the name of another boy—Ida—on it. To make matters more confusing, Ida sees Aoki holding that very eraser and thinks Aoki has a crush on him!

I had my doubts about this series. The premise didn't seem entirely interesting to me, but I decided to give it a try. I didn't realize I had devoured the first volume until I got to the last page. New addiction unlocked. I was into this series for a long time because I couldn't stop from the first moment, and I looked forward to the last one to find out what finally happened. It never disappoints!

It is a very well-crafted story that plays with the reader several times, but showing reality in a lighter way, the confusion, the discovery of identity, and the fear of what happens in the future. More than a romance, it is a story that shows the characters growing, maturing, without losing that youthful innocence.

It goes without saying that I loved the art. The expressions and gestures of the characters become the focus since the backgrounds are quite simple, if there are backgrounds, truth be told. It is one of those cases in which the script and the art complement each other perfectly, giving a harmony that I have rarely seen. My respects for that.

It should be a crime that three years' worth of work can be read in a month, because it literally took me a day or two to read each volume (until I had to wait for the last one). However, Aoki, Ida, Hashimoto, and Aida stay with you for a long time after finishing. It's hard for me to think of a series that surpasses this one. It's a tough teen drama to beat (Yes, I'm looking at you, Ao No Flag; that last volume ruined the ENTIRE series for me; among other things).

Manga: Lullaby of the Dawn, Volume 2

Quedé con ganas de más cuando leí el primer volumen, y sigo igual luego de leer la segunda parte de esta saga con monstruos, magia, y (aparente) sistema opresivo y elitista. Elva es un chamán de batalla cuya vida se ve erosionada poco a poco cada vez que hace retroceder a los monstruos que emergen del mar negro. Indignado al ver esto, un joven llamado Alto está decidido a encontrar una cura y permanecer al lado de Elva.

Después de 8 largos años, Alto se ha convertido en un joven intrépido, aunque esconde su amor en el fondo. Y a pesar de que solo espera vivir unos años más, Elva parece estar curándose mientras pasa tiempo al lado de Alto.

Ganador del primer lugar en la categoría Mejor Cómic en los 2022 Chill Chill BL Awards.

A diferencia del primer tomo, este se enfoca más en la construcción del mundo, en mostrarnos dónde viven Alto y Elva, lo que significa estar en la posición del segundo, y la búsqueda de Alto para entender mejor su propio mundo. Es una propuesta bastante sólida que muestra más que solo la relación entre ambos personajes, y ya solo por eso se lleva varios puntos.

El arte tampoco deja qué desear. Es bastante limpio, evocador, y atmosférico, adaptándose a diferentes escenas dependiendo de lo que esté pasando. Me gustaron en especial las escenas en la iglesia, donde todo llega a un nivel más alto sin que la trama sufra. Es un manga con un equilibrio casi perfecto, favoreciendo un lado o el otro en diferentes momentos.

Mi única crítica sería que, aunque se siente rápido, no nos dan casi nada de información sobre lo que pasó al final del primer volumen, mucho menos en lo que la búsqueda de Alto respecta. Quedan muchas preguntas sin respuesta, y aunque esto es bueno hasta cierto punto, siento que hubo más de una oportunidad para dar algo más sustancioso que solo aluciones o posibilidades.

En pocas palabras, es un manga muy bien hecho, con posibilidades prometedoras, aunque no es perfecto. El tiempo se me pasó volando más de una vez, especialmente la segunda mitad, cuando las cosas se pusieron aún más interesantes. ¡Tengo altas expectativas para el tercer volumen!

I was left wanting more when I read the first volume, and I remain the same after reading the second part of this saga with monsters, magic, and (apparent) oppressive and elitist system. Elva is a battle shaman whose life is eroded bit by bit every time he drives back monsters that emerge from the black sea. Indignant when he sees this, a young boy named Alto is determined to find a cure and stay by Elva's side.

After 8 long years, Alto has become a fearless young man, though he hides his love deep inside. And despite only expecting to live for a few more years, Elva seems to be healing as he spends time by Alto's side.

Awarded first place in the Best Comic category in the 2022 Chill Chill BL Awards.

Unlike the first volume, this one focuses more on world-building, showing us where Alto and Elva live, what it means to be in the second's position, and Alto's quest to better understand his own world. It is a fairly solid proposal that shows more than just the relationship between both characters, and for that reason alone it wins several points.

The art also leaves nothing to be desired. It's quite clean, evocative, and atmospheric, adapting to different scenes depending on what's going on. I especially liked the scenes in the church, where everything reaches a higher level without the plot suffering. It's a manga with almost perfect balance, favoring one side or the other at different times.

My only criticism would be that, although it feels fast, we are given almost no information about what happened at the end of the first volume, much less in regards to Alto's search. There are a lot of unanswered questions, and while this is good to a point, I feel like there was more than one opportunity to give something more meaty than just hints or possibilities.

In short, it is a very well-made manga, with promising possibilities, although it is not perfect. Time flew by more than once, especially the second half when things got even more interesting. I have high expectations for the third volume!

Y hay una razón por la que necesitan la sangre de Elwood para sus rituales satánicos. Algo inhumano está creciendo dentro de él. Dondequiera que vaya, las plantas cobran vida y el bosque lo llama, y Wil no está segura de poder salvar al chico al que no puede evitar amar.

La combinación de horror, fantasía, y romance juvenil me llamó la atención desde el primer momento, y la ejecución terminó por convencerme. Los personajes te atrapan desde la primera página, especialmente Elwood. Aunque he leído a varios personajes hombres que tienen el típico pasado oscuro que los tortura, esta vez se sintió más real, más diferente, y más visceral.

Las emociones de cada uno de ellos son suficientemente reales como para que tengas que detenerte de vez en cuando para tomar aire y poder seguir. Hay frases que te llegan directo al alma por el poder que tienen, con más de una escena que te pone la cabeza a volar, tratando de saber qué va a pasar más adelante.

Siento que la autora necesita pulir su estilo un poco más, tengo que admitir. Hubo momentos en que la narración no me convencía del todo. Había partes del libro que sonaban forzadas o fuera de lugar, como si les faltara trabajar un poco más. Sentí que podrían haber quedado mejor, y aunque la lectura no sufre, sí me sacó un poco de la historia.

En resumen, una historia oscura que se te mete en las venas hasta volverse adictiva. Devoré la segunda mitad como si no hubiese un mañana, por no mencionar la cantidad de giros en la trama, las sorpresas, los cambios, hasta que todo desembocó en un final que no me esperaba. Realista en medio de tanta fantasía, es un libro imperdible.

And there's a reason they need Elwood's blood for their satanic rituals. Something inhuman is growing inside of him. Everywhere he goes, the plants come alive and the forest calls to him, and Wil isn't sure if she can save the boy she can't help but love.

The combination of horror, fantasy, and young adult romance caught my attention from the first moment, and the execution ended up convincing me. The characters grab you from the first page, especially Elwood. Although I have read several male characters who have the typical dark past that tortures them, this time it felt more real, more different, and more visceral.

The emotions of each of them are real enough that you have to stop from time to time to take a breath and continue. There are phrases that go straight to your soul because of the power they have, with more than one scene that makes your head spin, trying to know what's going to happen later.

I feel like the author needs to polish her style a little more, I have to admit. There were times when the narrative didn't completely convince me. There were parts of the book that sounded forced or out of place, like they needed a little more work. I felt like they could have been better, and although the reading doesn't suffer, it did take me out of the story a little.

In short, a dark story that gets into your veins until it becomes addictive. I devoured the second half like there was no tomorrow, not to mention the number of plot twists, surprises, changes, until everything led to an ending that I wasn't expecting. Realistic in the midst of so much fantasy, it's an unmissable book.
