Desde hace tiempo quería una historia de horror diferente. Quería algo que no hubiese leído antes, cosa que no es muy difícil si tienes autismo y te encanta ver lo mismo, pero esta vez tenía ganas de cambio. Me llamó muchísimo la atención cuando leí la sinopsis de este libro, y me alegra haberle dado una oportunidad a Hell Is Dark with No Flowers, Vol. 1, escrita por Yoru Michio, arte por Ruka Todo, y traducción por Christina Rose. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Seiji Tohno a veces ve a quienes lo rodean como monstruos. Es una maldición que lo ha sumido en la desesperación... pero todo cambia una noche cuando se topa con un chico de una belleza cautivadora en una enorme mansión europea. El chico se presenta como Shiroshi Saijou, y sin darse cuenta, Seiji ha aceptado convertirse en su asistente a tiempo parcial. Resulta que el "servicio de representación" de Shiroshi consiste en enviar al Infierno a los pecadores poseídos por yokai, ¡lo que lo llevará a enfrentarse a un sinfín de horrores inimaginables!

Ya había escuchado mucho sobre el género de detective ocultista pero nunca había leído nada, así que no sabía que esperar. En mi experiencia como novato puedo decir que me encantó de principio a fin. Es una historia sólida que te atrapa desde el primer momento, junto con un arte precioso que sorprende cuando menos te lo esperas.

Los personajes me parecieron un poco simples, no tan elaborados como hubiese preferido, pero hay mucho material, mucho que explorar, y por lo que ví esta es una serie de diez volúmenes. Como inicio, siento que estuvo bastante, sienta las bases de un mundo fascinante, además de presentar a los personajes de una manera excelente.

El arte en sí es limpio y pulcro, con un estilo delicado que contrasta con lo brutal que pueden ser las escenas. No lo digo porque haya sangre excesiva o gore, sino porque psicológicamente es un manga que no se detiene a la hora de impartir justicia. La trama va más allá de simplemente torturar la superficie, nos muestra un castigo que se siente profundamente adecuado para cada personaje.

La buena noticia es que el siguiente volúmen ya está disponibley el tercero saldrá en septiembre de este año. No estoy de acuerdo con estos tiempos de espera, pero me encanta saber que la serie viene en camino. Es una historia fuerte pero satisfactoria, de esas que te dejan con un sabor dulce en la boca a pesar de que cuestionas tu moral en algunos momentos. ¡Necesitamos más!

I've been wanting a different horror story for a while. I wanted something I hadn't read before, which isn't too difficult if you have autism and love having the same old things, but this time I was looking for a change. I was really intrigued when I read the synopsis of this book, and I'm glad I gave Hell Is Dark with No Flowers, Vol. 1 a chance, written by Yoru Michio, art by Ruka Todo, and translation by Christina Rose. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

Seiji Tohno sometimes sees the people around him as monsters. It’s a curse that has driven him to a life of despair…but all that changes one evening when he stumbles across a bewitchingly beautiful boy in a huge European mansion. The boy introduces himself as Shiroshi Saijou, and before he knows it, Seiji has agreed to become Shiroshi’s part-time assistant. It turns out that Shiroshi’s “proxy service” is to consign yokai-possessed sinners to Hell, which will bring Seiji face-to-face with an unimaginable host of horrors!

I'd heard a lot about the occult detective genre but had never read anything, so I didn't know what to expect. Based on my experience as a newbie, I can say I loved it from beginning to end. It's a solid story that grabs you from the start, along with beautiful art that surprises you when you least expect it.

The characters seemed a bit simple to me, not as fleshed out as I would have preferred, but there's a lot of material, a lot to explore, and from what I saw, this is a ten-volume series. As a starting point, I feel it was enough; it lays the groundwork for a fascinating world and presents the characters in an excellent way.

The art itself is clean and polished, with a delicate style that contrasts with how brutal the scenes can be. I don't say this because there's excessive blood or gore, but because psychologically, it's a manga that doesn't hold back when it comes to delivering justice. The plot goes beyond simply torturing the surface; it shows us a punishment that feels deeply fitting for each character.

The good news is that the next volume is already available, and the third will be released in September of this year. I don't agree with these wait times, but I'm delighted to know the series is on the way. It's a powerful yet satisfying story, one that leaves you with a sweet taste in your mouth even though you question your morals at times. We need more!

Este fue un libro que te abre los ojos a la realidad de muchas personas, de las personas trans, para ser más específico. Hay muchísimos estilos combinados, y aunque la prosa es el más presente, el más constante, hay un estilo descriptivo en todos los poemas que sirve como hilo conductor. Aunque hay un poco de todo, es con la prosa breve que Parker brilla más que en otros momentos. Sí bien es cierto que hay frases cortas que parecen simples pensamientos, estas complementan los segmentos más extensos.

Si bien es cierto que no tengo quejas sobre este libro, sí tengo que decir que es bastante experimental de a momentos. No es algo que uno normalmente se esperaría a menos a que ya esté familiarizado con el estilo de la autora. Solo por eso recomendaría haber leí al menos un libro anterior para apreciar el estilo de escritura como se debe.

En líneas generales, es una lectura preciosa que explora la identidad y salud mental desde una visión honesta y directa a partes iguales. Es un libro especialmente importante por los tiempos en los que vivimos, donde las indentidades LGBTQ+, especialmente las identidades trans, han sido blanco de ataques. Con The Starlight She Becomes, Parker Lee lo dice todo y celebra su feminidad ante todo.

A few days ago, I finished a book that made me think about so many things, see them from a different perspective, and remember that, although we can sometimes be our own worst enemy, we can also be the chosen hero of legends. This was a book that opens your eyes to the reality of many people, trans people, to be more specific. With an honest and direct style, without ever losing her artistic flair, Parker Lee shares her experiences, from the most euphoric to the most devastating. Moments that would be familiar to anyone take on a different meaning through the author's pen.

There are many styles combined, and although prose is the most present, the most constant, there is a descriptive style in all the poems that serves as a common thread. Although there is a bit of everything, it is with her short prose that Parker shines most. While it is true that there are short sentences that seem like simple thoughts, these complement the longer segments.

While I certainly have no complaints about this book, I do have to say that it is quite experimental at times. It is not something one would normally expect unless one is already familiar with the author's style. For that reason alone, I would recommend reading at least one previous book to fully appreciate her writing style.

Overall, it's a beautiful read that explores identity and mental health from an honest and direct perspective. It's an especially important book given the times we live in, where LGBTQ+ identities, especially trans identities, have been under attack. With The Starlight She Becomes, Parker Lee speaks volumes and celebrates her femininity above all else.
