Cortometraje: Rapunzel (Juan Pablo Machado)

¡Hola Nocturnos! Quiero compartirles un cortometraje que vi ayer y que me pareció increíble. Ya saben que soy amante de los recuentos, y cuando vi esta pequeña obra de arte supe que tenía que compartirla aquí.
Rapunzel, de Juan Pablo Machado, es una reinterpretación escalofriante del cuento de hadas. Varios caballeros llegan a la torre de Rapunzel, esperando rescatarla de un monstruo. Sin embargo, lo que les espera no un felices para siempre.
No sorprende saber que este cortometraje ganó el Vimeo Staff Pick (August 2019) y el la Seleción Oficial del Shivers International Film Festival, 2019. ¡Estoy seguro de que les encantará!

Hello Nighters! I want to share a short film that I saw yesterday and that seemed incredible. You know that I am a lover of counts, and when I saw this little work of art I knew that I had to share it here.
Rapunzel, by Juan Pablo Machado, is a chilling reinterpretation of this fairy tale. Several knights arrive at Rapunzel's tower, hoping to rescue her from a monster. However, what awaits them is not a happily ever after.
It is not surprising to know that this short film won the Vimeo Staff Pick (August 2019) and the Official Selection of the Shivers International Film Festival, 2019. I am sure you will love it!

¡Hola Nocturnos!

Para cambiar un poco, hoy quiero compartirles el nuevo sencillo de Strvngers, una de mis bandas favoritas: Death Is The Only Way Out... Aunque sencillo, es imposible de dejar de ver. El video fue estrenado el 14 de agosto en Revolver Magazine, y desde entonces se volvió una de mis adicciones.

El tema es lento, sombrío, con un encanto decadente que lo vuelve atrapante. Maria Joaquín ha evolucionado como vocalista desde que el dúo se formó en 2015, y la música de Kyle Craig es encantadoramente fantasmal. Es una combinación ganadora para los amantes del downtempo y darkwave.

El álbum homónimo saldrá tentativamente el 8 de noviembre, ¿y adivinen quién lo espera ansioso? Strvngers es una banda que ha crecido con el tiempo, lento pero seguro, innovando en su estilo y solidificando su propuesta musical.

Esta balada oscura nos muestra nuestro lado más , ese que pocas veces queremos enfrentar, pero sí miramos de cerca, nos damos cuenta de que los demonios son realmente ángeles, tal y como dice la canción. ¡Vean el video más abajo!

To change a little, today I want to share the new single from Strvngers, one of my favorite bands: Death Is The Only Way Out... Although simple, it's impossible to stop watching. The video was released on August 14th in Revolver Magazine, and became one of my addictions since then.

The track is slow, gloomy, with a decadent charm that makes it captivating. Maria Joaquin has evolved as a vocalist since the duo was formed in 2015, and Kyle Craig's music is charmingly ghostly. It's a winning combination for downtempo and darkwave lovers.

The self-titled album will be tentatively released on November 8th, and guess who is looking forward to it? Strvngers is a band that has grown over time, slowly but surely, innovating in its style and solidifying its musical proposal.

This dark ballad shows us the darker side of ourselves, the one we rarely want to face, but if we look closely, we realize that demons are really angels, as the song says. Watch the video down below!

¡Buen día, nocturnos! Esta ha sido una semana súper-hiper-mega-ultra ocupada. He estado formando parte de varios eventos de reiki, y pronto les vendré con algunas fotos y anécdotas al respecto, pero quiero esperar a estar más tranquilo y que baje la marea. Mientras eso pasa, tengo un cómic del que quiero hablarles.

Under the Cottonwood Tree: El Susto de la Curandera, escrito por Paul y Carlos Meyer, y con arte de Margaret Hardy, fue una historia de magia, leyendas, familia y muchas moralejas. Es una novela gráfica llena de misticismo mejicano, la cual nos muestra la vida de los hermanos  Amadeo y Carlos Lucero, quienes deben enfrentarse con una poderosa curandera que parece conocer mucho sobre su familia.

Paul y Carlos Meyer crearon una trama atrapante que muestra el encanto de las creencias mejicanas. La historia refleja las creencias y mitos folklóricos, añadiendo misticismo y fantasía cuando hace falta. ¡Lo interesante es que es apta para todos los públicos!

Hay una particularidad que me encantó y fue que los diálogos tienen frases en español (que asumo) típicas de Méjico. Ahora, siendo honesto, lo único que me molesta de Under the Cottonwood Tree: El Susto de la Curandera es que se usa la palabra bruja como sinónimo de maligno; es el único detalle con el que tengo problemas. Pensé que ya habíamos superado esa etapa.

Con respecto al arte de Margaret Hardy, solo puedo decir que es maravilloso. Los bordes y marcos que unían las páginas hacían que la lectura fuera mucho más fluida y atrapante. La mezcla de colores vibrantes le daba una vida singular a cada panel, y hubo más de uno en el que podía perderme viendo los detalles. ¡Definitivamente una obra de arte!

Under the Cottonwood Tree: El Susto de la Curandera es perfecto para público de todas las edades, amante de la fantasía y de las historias familiares. Paul Meyer, Carlos Meyer y Margaret Hardy nos dejan una enseñanza valiosa: vivir en el pasado sepulta el presente. ¡Más historias como esta, por favor!

Good day, nighters! This has been a super-hyper-mega-ultra busy week. I have been part of several reiki events, and soon I will come with some photos and anecdotes about it, but I want to wait to be calmer and the tide goes down. While that happens, I have a comic that I want to talk to you about.

Under the Cottonwood Tree: El Susto de la Curandera, written by Paul and Carlos Meyer, and with art by Margaret Hardy, was a story of magic, legends, family and many morals. It's a graphic novel full of Mexican mysticism, which shows us the life of the brothers Amadeo and Carlos Lucero, who must face a powerful curandera who seems to know a lot about their family.

Paul and Carlos Meyer created a captivating plot that shows the charm of Mexican beliefs. The story reflects folk beliefs and myths, adding mysticism and fantasy when needed. The interesting thing is that it is suitable for all audiences!

There is a particularity that I loved and it was that the dialogues have phrases in Spanish (which I assume) typical of Mexico. Now, being honest, the only thing that bothers me about Under the Cottonwood Tree: El Susto de la Curandera is that the word witch is used as a synonym for evil; it is the only detail with which I have problems with. I thought we had already passed that stage.

Regarding the art of Margaret Hardy, I can only say it is wonderful. The edges and frames that linked the pages made the reading much more fluid and engaging. The mix of vibrant colors gave each panel a unique life, and there was more than one in which I could get lost seeing the details. Definitely a work of art!

Under the Cottonwood Tree: El Susto de la Curandera is perfect for audiences of all ages, lovers of fantasy and family stories. Paul Meyer, Carlos Meyer and Margaret Hardy leave us a valuable teaching: living in the past buries the present. More stories like this one, please!

Nocturnos, ¿cómo han estado?
Hace unos días estaba leyendo The Sandman #19, titulado "A Midsummer Night's Dream", y hubo una página que me puso a pensar. Les dejo más abajo las capturas, y espero saber qué piensan ustedes al respecto. Aquí está mi opinión.
La realidad no es solamente lo tangible, lo físico, sino también lo posible, los quizás. ¿Quién dice que los sueños no son reales? ¿O que son manifestaciones del inconsciente? Bien pueden ser una representación abstracta de la "realidad" como la conocemos, o información que no hemos procesado aún, algo que no hemos entendido del todo. Lo mismo sucede con los cuentos, las historias que creamos. ¿Acaso la ficción no viene siempre con una dosis de realidad? ¿Quién nos dice lo contrario?
Para mí, la realidad tiene los límites que nosotros imponemos, llega tan lejos como nosotros se lo permitamos, y solo está condicionada por nuestra percepción. Mi realidad incluye muchas cosas y conceptos que para algunos son falsos, pero no por ello he dejado de tener experiencias relacionadas. ¿Ustedes qué opinan? ¡Espero leer sus comentarios!

Nighters, how have you been?
A few days ago I was reading The Sandman #19, titled "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and there was a page that got me thinking. I leave you below the captions, and I hope to know what you think about it. Here is my opinion.
Reality is not only the tangible, the physical, but also the possible, the what ifs. Who says dreams are not real? Or that they are manifestations of the unconscious? They may well be an abstract representation of "reality" as we know it, or information that we haven't processed yet, something that we haven't fully understood. The same goes for tales, the stories we create. Does fiction not always come with a dose of reality? Who tells us otherwise?
For me, reality has the limits that we impose on it, it goes as far as we allow it to go, and it's only conditioned by our perception. My reality includes many things and concepts that for some are false, but no because of that I've stopped having related experiences. What do you think? I hope to read your comments!

¡Buen día, nocturnos! Ayer estuve en perdido en un mundo invernal, inmerso por completo en una historia con la que muchos se podrán sentir identificados. Su encanto gótico me enamoró al instante, a pesar de tener mis dudas al principio.

Kriss:The Gift of Wrath, escrito por Ted Naifeh y con el arte de Warren Wucinich, era un cómic del que no estaba seguro de si leer o no. Había algo en la sinopsis que no me convencía del todo, pero decidí darle una oportunidad. Resulta ser que la sinopsis no le hace justicia a esta maravilla de historia.

Kriss ha sido siempre un paría, la oveja negra de todo un pueblo. Sin embargo, cuando una bestia está a punto de cobrar su vida, Kriss obtiene el poder necesario para cambiar su mundo y encontrar un destino que no está seguro de querer. Bien podría conseguir todo aquello con lo que siempre ha soñado, o perder lo poco que ha encontrado.

Admito que, aunque no sabía qué esperar, Kriss:The Gift of Wrath fue una sorpresa tras otra. Este primer volumen nos presenta al personaje desde su infancia, como un pequeño desadaptado, hasta convertirse en un condenado a muerte por traición a la corona. A pesar de todo, y por la forma en que se van desarrollando, es imposible no sentir simpatía por él.

Ted Naifeh creó una historia que explora, con muchísimos elementos fantásticos, la manera en que todos nos llegamos a sentir. Los personajes son un reflejo perfecto de la adolescencia, cuando creemos que nadie nos entiende, cuando realmente estamos solos contra el mundo, y lleva la huella emocional suficientemente fuerte como para hacer que los lectores se identifiquen con él al instante.

Gran parte del mérito y del atractivo que tiene Kriss:The Gift of Wrath es también gracias al trabajo de Warren Wucinich, quien supo darle vida a todo este universo tan particular. Todas las páginas demuestran lo violenta (emocionalmente) que es la historia. La estética gótica le da un toque lúgubre a las escenas más imprevistas.

Los amantes de la acción, temas sociales, mundos bien construidos y una buena dosis de fantasía devorarán este primer volumen. Intenso, adictivo y atractivo, Kriss:The Gift of Wrath va camino a ser el favorito de muchos lectores. ¡Estoy ansioso por ver qué es lo que viene!

Good day, nighters! Yesterday I was lost in a winter world, completely immersed in a story with which many may feel identified. Its gothic charm made me instantly fell in love with it, despite having my doubts at the beginning.

Kriss:The Gift of Wrath, written by Ted Naifeh and with the art of Warren Wucinich, was a comic book I wasn't sure whether to read or not. There was something about the synopsis that didn't convince me at all, but I decided to give it a try. It turns out that the synopsis doesn't do justice to this wonder of story.

Kriss has always been an outcast, the black sheep of a whole town. However, when a beast is about to take his life, Kriss gets the power to change his world and find a destiny he's not sure he wants. He could well get everything he has always dreamed of, or lose what little he has found.

I admit that, although I didn't know what to expect, Kriss:The Gift of Wrath was one surprise after the other. This first volume introduces us to the character from his childhood, as a small maladjustment, until he became a death row for treason to the crown. In spite of this, and because of the way everything develops, it is impossible not to feel sympathy for him.

Ted Naifeh created a story that explores, with many fantastic elements, the way we all used to feel. The characters are a perfect reflection of adolescence, when we hink that no one understands us, when we are really alone against the world, and it carries a emotional footprint strong enough to make readers identify with him right away.

Much of the merit and appeal that Kriss:The Gift of Wrath has is also thanks to the work of Warren Wucinich, who knew how to bring this whole universe to life. All pages show how violent (emotionally) the story is. Gothic aesthetics give a gloomier touch to the most unexpected scenes.

Lovers of action, social themes, well-built worlds and a good dose of fantasy will devour this first volume. Intense, addictive and attractive, Kriss:The Gift of Wrath is on its way to being a many readers' favorite. I'm eager to see what's coming!

Nocturnos, ¿cómo les ha ido?

Hace unos días terminé de leer un cómic que me encantó. ¿Han escuchado de un personaje de género fluido cuya historia no se base solamente en su género? Es la idea principal detrás de Moth & Whisper Vol. 1: The Kid, escrito por Ted Anderson y con arte de Jen Hickman.

Hace meses que desaparecieron los padres de Niki, dos famosos ladrones a sueldo que han burlado a la autoridad por años. Ele decide no quedarse de brazos cruzados, y, haciendo caso omiso a lo que le dijeron sus padres, sale en busca de respuestas, asumiendo la identidad de ambos ladrones. Sin embargo, la pregunta no es si los encontrará, si no si estará a la altura de su legado.

La historia es más que solo interesante. Ted Anderson no defrauda en lo más mínimo. Niki está muy bien construide y refleja tantos sentimientos en un único personaje que asombra. Sin embargo, lejos de basarse en el género fluido de Niki, Moth & Whisper Vol. 1: The Kid presenta una historia atrapante y llena de giros.

Jen Hickman también supo jugar bien sus cartas, dándole un aire tanto familiar como intrigante a las imágenes. Los colores en su mayoría fríos, junto con la calma que suelen representa, contrastaron atractivamente con la intriga que se maneja en todo momento. ¡Se convirtió en una lectura atrapante y adictiva!

A pesar de que es apenas el primer volumen, y espero con ansias el siguiente, Moth & Whisper Vol. 1: The Kid es una lectura más que solo entretenida. Es refrescante, y hasta liberador de cierta forma, encontrarse con una historia que no se base netamente en la orientación de su personaje principal, sino que que la trate como una característica más. Ted Anderson y Jen Hickman crearon un cómic con los pies en la tierra a pesar de todo, un mundo bastante completo y con potencial, mucho potencial.

A few days ago I finished reading a comic that I loved. Have you heard of a genderfluid character whose story is not based solely on their gender? That's the main idea behind Moth & Whisper Vol. 1: The Kid, written by Ted Anderson and with art by Jen Hickman.

Niki's parents disappeared several months ago, two famous thieves-for-hire who have mocked authority for years. They decides not to sit idly by, and, ignoring what ther parents told them, goes out in search of answers, assuming the identity of both thieves. However, the question is not whether they will find them, but if they will live up to their legacy.

The story is more than just interesting. Ted Anderson doesn't disappoint in the least. Niki is very well-built and reflects so many feelings in a single character it amazes. However, far from being based on Niki's genderfluidity, Moth & Whisper Vol. 1: The Kid presents a captivating story full of twists.

Jen Hickman also knew how to play her cards well, giving both the familiar and intriguing air to the images. The mostly cold colors, along with the calm they usually represent, contrasted attractively with the intrigue that's handled at all times. It became a captivating and addictive reading!

Although it's only the first volume, and I look forward to the next, Moth & Whisper Vol. 1: The Kid is a reading more than just entertaining. It's refreshing, and even liberating in a certain way, to find a story that is not based purely on the orientation of its main character, but that treats is like another feature. Ted Anderson and Jen Hickman created a comic with feet on the ground despite everything, a fairly complete world with potential, a lot of potential.

Hoy quiero romper un poco con el tipo de reseñas que publico y hablarles de un libro que me pareció de lo más curioso. Se trata de The Forgotten Past: An Eclectic Collection of Little Known Stories from the Annals of History, de Andrew Vinken. Este libro es perfecto para los amantes de lo inusual, lo irreverente y lo curioso, ¡y sé que muchos de ustedes lo son!

Cada capítulo está dedicado a datos curiosos e historias aparentemente carentes de importancia o que bien no han dado de que hablar en mucho tiempo. Casos como el verdadero primer vuelo en la historia de la humanidad, un niño que fue sepultado sin nombre, un hombre que se volvió millonario vendiendo un país ficticio y hasta un cadáver exhibido como atracción de circo. ¿Creo que ya capté su atención? Me parece que sí.

Andrew Vinken presenta una colección de historias tan atractivas que es imposible creer que a pocos les puedan interesar, aunque algunas sí han sido más relevantes de lo que pareciera. Su estilo humorístico y sarcástico no hace sino sumergir al lector, volviéndolo adicto al mundo de improbabilidades que se descubre página tras página.

Aunque bastante corto, The Forgotten Past es suficientemente llamativo como para hacer difícil no querer leer más. Bien podríamos decir que este podría ser el inicio de una colección de historias inusuales, casos de la vida real que dieron de qué hablar en su tiempo y misterios sin resolver. Es justo el tipo de libro al que provoca hincarle el diente cuando la curiosidad ataca, ¡y vaya que vale la pena!

De verdad quiero leer algo más de Andrew Vinken. The Forgotten Past: An Eclectic Collection of Little Known Stories from the Annals of History me dejó con ganas de seguir leyendo y pensando en qué otros misterios podrían estar esperando. ¡Estimado autor, espero una segunda parte!

Today I want to break a bit with the kind of reviews I publish and tell them about a book that I found most curious. This is The Forgotten Past: An Eclectic Collection of Little Known Stories from the Annals of History, by Andrew Vinken. This book is perfect for lovers of the unusual, the irreverent and the curious, and I know that many of you are!

Each chapter is devoted to curious facts and stories that seem to be unimportant or that they haven't given to talk in a long time. Cases like the real first flight in the history of mankind, a child who was buried without a name, a man who became a millionaire selling a fictional country and even a corpse exhibited as a circus attraction. Maybe I already got your attention? I think so.

Andrew Vinken presents a collection of stories so appealing that it's impossible to believe that few may be interested in them, although some have been more relevant than it seems. His humorous and sarcastic style only immerses the reader, making them addicted to the world of improbability that is discovered page after page.

Although quite short, The Forgotten Past is striking enough to make it difficult not to want to read more. We could well say that this could be the beginning of a collection of unusual stories, real-life cases that gave what to talk about in their time and unsolved mysteries. It is just the kind of book you want to gift yourelf when curiosity strikes, and it's worth it!

I really want to read something else from Andrew Vinken. The Forgotten Past: An Eclectic Collection of Little Known Stories from the Annals of History left me wanting to keep reading and thinking about what other mysteries might be waiting for. Dear author, I await for a second part!

Nocturnos, ¿cómo les va? Espero que bien y que estén leyendo, al igual que yo.

No es un secreto para nadie que Siria, el país de donde viene mi familia, ha estado en guerra desde hace varios años. Haytham: A Childhood in Syria, escrito por Nicolas Hénin y con arte por Kyungeun Park, muestra muy bien cómo inició esta guerra y de qué manera ha afectado las vidas de tantas familias que tuvieron que abandonar su país.

Haytham: A Childhood in Syria nos presenta a una familia como cualquier otra, un matrimonio de clase media con dos hijos que viven en paz. Su tranquilidad, así como la tranquilidad de todo un país, se vuelve trizas cuando el padre y cabeza de la familia participa en las protestas en contra del gobierno dictatorial de Bashar al-Assad.

Nicolas Hénin va directo al grano y muestra exactamente qué es lo que está pasando en Siria, aunque hay algunos detalles que deja de lado por motivos de extensión. Es evidente que un problema sociopolítico tan complejo no quepa del todo en algunas páginas, pero la historia muestra la crudeza de la vida real.

Lo mismo se puede decir de Kyungeun Park. Sus ilustraciones en blanco y negro para Haytham: A Childhood in Syria le dan un aire mucho más realista y rudo a cada uno de los paneles. Aunque me costó conectarme con la historia por esto mismo (cuestión de gustos, nada más), el efecto es innegable. Sentí que veía una película de drama.

Vuelvo y repito, el cómic se queda corto al mostrar qué ocurre en Siria, hay muchos factores que se quedan por fuera, pero es bastante fiel en lo que muestra. Haytham: A Childhood in Syria sirve como introducción al problema que ha aquejado a Siria desde hace años y hace que el lector sienta empatía por los personajes que, vale la pena destacar, son personas de la vida real.

It is no secret to anyone that Syria, the country my family comes from, has been at war for several years. Haytham: A Childhood in Syria, written by Nicolas Hénin and with art by Kyungeun Park, shows very well how this war started and how it has affected the lives of so many families that had to leave their country.

Haytham: A Childhood in Syria introduces us to a family like any other, a middle class marriage with two boys living in peace. Their tranquility, as well as the tranquility of an entire country, is shattered when the father and head of the family participates in the protests against the dictatorial government of Bashar al-Assad.

Nicolas Hénin goes straight to the point and shows exactly what is happening in Syria, although there are some details that he neglects for reasons of extension. It's evident that such a complex socio-political problem doesn't fit at all in a couple of pages, but the story shows the rawness of real life.

The same can be said of Kyungeun Park. His black and white illustrations for Haytham: A Childhood in Syria give each panel a much more realistic and rude look. Although it was difficult for me to connect with the story for this reason (a matter of taste, nothing more,) the effect is undeniable. I felt I watched a drama movie.

I'll go back and repeat, the comic falls short to show what happens in Syria, there are many factors that fall outside, but it's quite faithful in what it shows. Haytham: A Childhood in Syria serves as an introduction to the problem that has plagued Syria for years and makes the reader empathize with the characters that, worth noting, are real-life people.
