Holas, holas, ¿qué tal todo?

¿Alguna vez te has preguntado cómo es El Otro Lado? Muchas veces soñamos con que sea un idilio, el lugar perfecto para un descanso, pero está muy lejos de ser así en Ghostgirl: El Regreso, por Tonya Hurley. Cuando leí la primera novela de esta saga años atras que me encantó, y esta no se queda atrás.

Luego de los eventos en Ghostgirl, Charlotte Usher está atrapada en una central telefónica, en donde se supone debería ayudar a los adolescentes con sus problemas como la voz de su conciencia, pero las cosas serían más sencillas si tuviera por lo menos una llamada. Mientras tanto, una pedicurista deja a Petula en coma, y Scarlet decide que solo hay una persona capaz de traer de regreso a su hermana: Charlotte.

Lo que me gustó de Ghostgirl: El Regreso fue el humor con el que se trataban todas las escenas. Algo que tiene esta saga es que, aunque tétrica si se la ve bien, es muy tierna, casi inocente. Se nota que Tonya Hurley disfrutó escribiendo la secuela a la novela que la hizo famosa.

Los personajes son parodias de los clichés juveniles, pero suficientemente frescos como para no ser bochornosos o aburridos. Lejos de ser plano, el elenco de esta novela es cualquier cosa menos efímero.

Temas como el autoestima, la amistad, la lealtad y la vida escolar, así como cuestiones más filosóficas como el tiempo perdido, lo que ya no será, las puertas cerradas, el futuro incierto, preguntas que hacen de la adolescencia un tiempo tan incierto, reaparecen con más fuerza. Sin embargo, la autora hace que parezcan insignificantes, enseñano que el aquí y el ahora es más importante que cualquier otra cosa.

Ghostgirl: El Regreso es una comedia negra que se burla de la vida adolescente solo para hacerla más llevadera. Tonya Hurley hizo un gran trabajo con esta novela, y estoy ansioso por ver cómo sigue.

Hello, hello, how are you?

Have you ever wondered what the Other Side is like? Many times we dream of being an idyll, the perfect place for a break, but it's far from being like this in Ghostgirl: Homecoming, by Tonya Hurley. When I read the first novel of this saga years ago (only in Spanish) I loved it, and this isn't left far behind.

After the events in Ghostgirl, Charlotte Usher is trapped in a telephone bank, where she's supposed to help teenagers with their problems acting as the voice of their conscience, but things would be simpler if she had at least one call. Meanwhile, a pedicurist leaves Petula in a coma, and Scarlet decides there's only one person capable of bringing her sister back: Charlotte.

What I liked about Ghostgirl: Homecoming was the humor with which all the scenes were treated. Something this saga has is that, although gloomy if looked at it through the right lens, it is very cute, almost innocent. It's obvious that Tonya Hurley enjoyed writing the sequel to the novel that made her famous.

The characters are parodies of youth clichés, but fresh enough not to be embarrassing or boring. Far from being flat, the cast of this novel is anything but ephemeral.

Topics such as self-esteem, friendship, loyalty, and school life, as well as more philosophical issues such as lost time, what will no longer be, closed doors, uncertain future, questions that make adolescence such an uncertain time, reappear with more force. However, the author makes them seem insignificant, teaching us that the here and now are more important than anything else.

Ghostgirl: Homecoming is a black comedy that mocks teenage life just to make it more bearable. Tonya Hurley did a great job with this novel, and I'm eager to see how it continues.
