Buenos días, Nocturnos. ^^ Hace días estaba pensando en Cuentos de Hadas para no Dormir, mi colección de recuentos, y Reflejos, mi recuento de la Bella Durmiente, sobre cuáles son las características que hacen que un recuento sea bueno. Es un género que me gusta mucho, del cual también quiero seguir escribiendo, así que quiero compartirles mis ideas al respecto. Déjenme en los comentarios lo que ustedes piensan al respecto. ^w^
1. Volver al material original. Antes de escribir, me puse a leer los cuentos originales de los hermanos Grimm, no todos, pero si varios, y tomé nota de cuáles me llamaban más la atención, qué elementos me parecían intereantes, incluso leí sobre su historia y cómo fueron editados con el tiempo. Hice lo mismo con las novelas góticas y leyendas que incluí, por lo que tenía un buen repertorio de ideas para inspirarme. Me encanta cuando leo una historia y encuentro referencias, guiños, simbolismo, y elementos que reconozco, pero que se usan de otra manera, y justo eso quería hacer con ambos libros.
2. ¿Y qué tal si...? Es la primera pregunta que me hice. Para Cuentos... pensé "¿y qué tal si los hombres fuesen las víctimas?" Y para Reflejos me pregunté "¿qué pasa con la princesa mientras duerme?" El punto de un recuento es hacer algo diferente, pensar en esas posibilidades que tienes con la historia, pero siempre ir más allá.Por ejemplo, cualquiera puede hacer de caperucita roja una cazadora de hombres lobos o una bruja, ¿pero y si fuese la abuela la que debe salvar a su nieta? ¿Y si los dioses griegos tuvieran hijos en Venezuela? ¿Y si Blanca Nieves fuese una psicópata y la reina tuviese que mantenerla cautiva? (Alguien que escriba algo así, por favor, o lo haré yo en algún momento). ¿Y qué tal si Pinocho cazara vampiros? Ah no, ya va, ya alguien hizo eso.
3. Dar razones. Aunque toda buena historia necesita explicar lo suficiente para ser creíble, esto es mucho más importante al hablar de retellings, más aún cuando se trata de cuentos de hadas, en donde las cosas son así y punto. El lobo quiere comerse a caperucita y su abuela solo porque tiene hambre, ¿pero y si en realidad es un exnovio psicópata de caperucita? ¿Por qué la bruja quiere comerse a Hansel y Gretel? ¿De dónde sacó su espejo mágico la reina de Blanca Nieves? Un único cuento tiene más preguntas que respuestas, y descubrirlas es muy divertido, ya sea escribiéndolas o leyéndolas.
4. Agregar, cambiar, y quitar a conveniencia. A veces no se puede incluir todo el material, o algunas escenas o elementos tienen que entrar para que la historia funcione mejor. Cuando leí Frankenstein se me hizo muy parecido a Pinocchio, y decidí inspirarme en ambas tramas. También se pueden hacer combinaciones inusuales, como hizo Marissa Meyer en su saga de ciencia ficción The Lunar Chronicles, o Kevin Richey en su serie de horror Zombie Fairy Tales. O como hice yo en Cuentos..., donde casi no hay princesas, y las historias de los Grimm se combinan con mitología y literatura gótica. ¿Por qué? Como decimos en Venezuela, porque quiero, porque puedo, y porque me da la gana. ^w^

It's a genre that I really like, which I also want to keep writing about, so I want to share my ideas about it. Let me know in the comments what you think about this. ^w^
1. Return to the original material. Before writing, I started to read the original stories of the Brothers Grimm, not all, but several, and I took note of which ones caught my attention, what elements seemed interesting, I even read about their history and how they were edited over time. I did the same with the Gothic novels and legends I included, so I had a good repertoire of ideas to inspire me. I love when I read a story and find references, winks, symbolism, and elements that I recognize, but that are used differently, and I wanted to do just that with both books.
2. What if ...? It's the first question I asked myself. For Cuentos... I thought "what if men were the victims?" And for Reflections I asked myself "what happens to the princess while she sleeps?" The point of a retelling is to do something different, think about those possibilities that you have with the story, but always go further. For example, anyone can make Little Red Riding Hood a werewolf hunter or a witch, but what if it were the grandmother who must save her granddaughter? What if Snow White was a psychopath and the queen had to keep her captive? (Someone write something like that, please, or I will at some point). What if the Greek gods had children in Venezuela? What if Pinocchio hunted vampires? Oh no, wait, someone already did that.
3. Give reasons. Although every good story needs to explain enough to be credible, this is much more important when talking about retellings, especially when it comes to fairy tales, where things are like that, period. The wolf wants to eat Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother just because he's hungry, but what if he actually was Little Red Hood's psychopathic ex-boyfriend? Why does the witch want to eat Hansel and Gretel? Where did the queen of Snow White get her magic mirror from? Only one story has more questions than answers, and discovering them is a lot of fun, whether by writing or reading them.
4. Add, change, and remove at convenience. Sometimes not all the material can be included, or some scenes or elements have to go in for the story to work better. When I read Frankenstein it seemed very similar to Pinocchio for me, and I decided to get inspired by both plots. Unusual combinations can also be made, as Marissa Meyer did in her sci-fi saga The Lunar Chronicles, or Kevin Richey in his horror series Zombie Fairy Tales. Or as I did in Cuentos..., where there are almost no princesses, and the stories of the Grimms are combined with mythology and Gothic literature. Why? As we say in Venezuela, because I want to, because I can, and because I feel like it. ^w^
