Antes que nada, tengo que aclarar que leí la versión en inglés de TokyoPop, así que no puedo decir nada acerca de las ediciones en español más allá de que están disponibles.

Aunque la historia es relativamente sencilla, el estilo y el ritmo de la narración son lo que destaca en Touch Within the Abyss. La combinación de ambos permite que los personajes crezcan sin prisa pero sin pausa, volviéndose entrañables para el lector de principio a fin. Es una historia sencilla, sí, pero es justo en esa sencillez donde el talento de Moyori Mori brilla por su cuenta.

Con esto no quiero decir que el arte es de menor o de baja calidad, pero ya saben que siempre me enfoco más en el guión. Sin embargo, todo manga que tenga un estilo de dibujo adaptable a las escenas más enternecedoras y las más violentas se merece mi respeto sin necesidad de responder a nada. ¡Me encantó la forma en que las líneas y los sombreados jugaban con la perspectiva en cada uno de los páneles!

Mi única queja es que hubo escenas donde sentí que la narración perdía fuerzas. Hubo un balance muy bien logrado entre los personajes y la trama tomando protagonismo y dirigiendo la historia, pero hubo instancias en las que ambos luchaban a la vez, o ninguno tomaba la iniciativa. Aunque no fue muy seguido, sí hubo escenas en donde hubiera preferido que Moyori Mori hubiese tenido un mejor foco.

En general, Touch Within the Abyss es una historia sencilla pero adorable, con una buena dosis de violencia cuando hace falta y que no está allí para hacer de relleno. Todo añade, todo impulsa la trama hacia una resolución. Si bien es cierto que no es una historia perfecta, es ideal para aquellos que quieren algo relativamente suave para soñar despiertos.

There's a story I loved from the start because of how human the characters are, the beautiful art, and the natural character development. Chinatsu knows better than to get involved with a potential witness, but he can't help but be drawn to Kasumi's radiant smile. First of all, I have to clarify that I read the English version from TokyoPop, so I can't say anything about the Spanish editions other than that they're available.

Although the story is relatively simple, the style and pacing of the narration are what stand out in Touch Within the Abyss. The combination of both allows the characters to grow steadily and steadily, becoming endearing to the reader from beginning to end. It's a simple story, yes, but it's precisely in that simplicity that Moyori Mori's talent shines through.

With this, I don't mean to say that the art is inferior or of low quality, but you know I always focus more on the script. However, any manga with a drawing style that adapts to both the most tender and the most violent scenes deserves my respect without needing to respond to anything. I loved the way the lines and shading played with perspective in each panel!

My only complaint is that there were scenes where I felt the narrative lost momentum. There was a very well-achieved balance between the characters and the plot, with the characters taking center stage and driving the story. However, there were instances where both were fighting simultaneously, or neither took the initiative. Although it wasn't frequent, there were scenes where I would have preferred that Moyori Mori had a more focused approach.

Overall, Touch Within the Abyss is a simple yet charming story, with a good dose of violence when necessary and not just there as filler. Everything contributes, everything propels the plot toward a resolution. While it's certainly not a perfect story, it's ideal for those who want something relatively gentle to daydream about.

Actualización sobre Adicción: 10 meses / Addiction Update: 10 months

Otros dos meses acaban de pasar volando, así que decidí hacer otra actualización de cómo van las cosas con respecto a mi adicción y mis compras compulsivas. No hay muchos cambios, pero me hace bien escribir al respecto, y sé que hay que seguir hablando de este tema. Así que henos aquí una vez más.

Estos últimos dos meses han sido insufribles. Tengo que admitirlo. Aunque no he comprado casi nada, el mecanismo de defensa de siempre sigue presente: cada vez que estoy estresado, me entran ganas de comprar libros. He podido mantenerme bajo control la gran mayoría del tiempo, pero todo el estrés que he manejado hasta ahora no es normal.

De por sí trabajar y estudiar al mismo tiempo es difícil. Agrégenle la espera de un bebé, que amerita visitas médicas y cuidados especiales para tu pareja, agrégenle también crisis de salud mental, la expiración de tu permiso de trabajo sin saber cuándo lo vas a recuperar, perder tu trabajo a consecuencia, pagos adicionales sorpresa que hacer a inmigración... Considerando todo esto, creo que me he manejado bastante bien.

No tengo una lista de los libros que compré este mes, pero estoy seguro de que fueron más de uno o dos. Sin embargo, estoy poniéndome al día con las reseñas, con mis responsabilidades pendientes, y tratando en lo posible de enfocarme en mis historias actuales. Hay varias ideas que merecen tiempo y dedicación, así que estoy dándoles prioridad (aunque obvio que primero hay que salir de los estudios).

Mi esposo y yo estamos en otro estado visitando a sus padres, y el cambio de ambiente nos está ayudando a ambos. Sin embargo, no importa en qué estado estés, tus trámites de inmigración siguen pendientes, los pagos sorpresa siguen apareciendo, así que toca respirar. Respirar muy hondo para no pegar el grito al cielo.

Me refugié en la lectura más de una vez igual que cuando era adolescente. Me sigue ayudando, y estoy intentando aplicar mis propios consejos para leer más, pero cómo cuesta a veces. Las noches son extremas, o muy sencillas o muy difíciles, así que hago lo que puedo para concentrarme en los próximos días. Aunque me olvidé de mi planeador semanal, mantengo una especie de rutina que me ayuda.

A final de cuentas, todo se reduce a una simple ecuación mental: si me compro esto, es un dinero que le estoy quitando a mi propio hijo antes de nacer. Así de sencillo. Es extremo, y estoy seguro de que vendrá con problemas, pero es mi último recurso porque, sorpresa de las sorpresas, 10 meses no son suficientes para vencer una adicción.

Another two months have flown by, so I decided to give another update on how things are going with my addiction and compulsive shopping. Not much has changed, but it feels good to write about it, and I know we need to keep talking about this. So here we are once again.

These past two months have been unbearable. I have to admit it. Even though I haven't bought much, my usual defense mechanism is still in place: whenever I'm stressed, I get the urge to buy books. I've managed to keep it under control most of the time, but all the stress I've been dealing with so far isn't normal.

Working and studying at the same time is difficult enough. Add to that the anticipation of a baby, which requires doctor's appointments and special care for your partner, plus mental health crises, your work permit expiring without knowing when it will come back, losing your job as a result, and unexpected additional payments to immigration... Considering all of this, I think I've managed pretty well.

I don't have a list of the books I bought this month, but I'm sure it was more than one or two. However, I'm catching up on reviews, my pending responsibilities, and trying my best to focus on my current stories. There are several ideas that deserve time and dedication, so I'm prioritizing them (although obviously, I have to finish my schoolwork first).

My husband and I are in another state visiting his parents, and the change of scenery is helping us both. However, no matter what state you're in, your immigration paperwork is still pending, and surprise bills keep popping up, so you can only take a breath. Take a deep breath so you don't lose your mind.

I've taken refuge in reading more than once, just like when I was a teenager. It still helps, and I'm trying to apply my own tips for reading more, but it's so hard sometimes. The nights are extreme, either very easy or very difficult, so I do what I can to focus on the next few days. Even though I forgot about my weekly planner, I maintain a sort of routine that helps.

In the end, it all boils down to a simple mental equation: if I buy this, it's money I'm taking away from my own son before he's even born. It's that simple. It's extreme, and I'm sure it will come with problems, but it's my last resort because, surprise of all surprises, 10 months isn't enough to overcome an addiction.

Bienvenidos a una nueva edición de mi entusiasmo por esta historia de amor sáfico poliamoroso que se convertirá en su próxima obsesión. Sin duda lo fue para mí, y espero que también lo sea para ustedes, porque desde el guion hasta el arte, pasando por la contrucción del mundo y la atmósfera general, no tengo prácticamente nada de qué quejarme cuando se trata de Muted, por Miranda Mundt.

En la luna llena de su vigésimo primer cumpleaños, la joven bruja Camille Severin debe realizar el ritual tradicional para invocar a un demonio alado que traerá éxito y prosperidad a su familia. Pero cuando el ritual sale mal, revela verdades aterradoras sobre sí misma y secretos que amenazan con destruir a su familia.

He elogiado mucho esta serie en mis reseñas anteriores del primero y segundo volumen de la edición impresa, así que aquí va un resumen: es perfecta, te deja sin aliento con un guion sólido, personajes muy bien desarrollados, y un arte vibrante que complementa y a la vez contrasta con la historia gótica que Miranda Mundt crea episodio tras episodio.

Ahora bien, lo que quizás no sepas sucede al final de la segunda temporada y luego en la tercera: una vez que se ha establecido el mundo y se han presentado todos los personajes, Muted se vuelve aún más salvaje de lo imaginable. Suceden tantas cosas, pero en ningún momento se siente pesada, abrumadora ni excesiva, porque todo está bien organizado de una manera que no afecta la calidad de la lectura.

Debo decir que hay algunos detalles sin resolver en la tercera temporada para los que esperaba una explicación más clara. Sin revelar detalles de la trama, hay algo sobre Dendro, Athalie, y un poco sobre Alette, la abuela de Camille, de quien sabemos poco pero cuyas acciones han influido en todo lo que le sucede. Diría que es bastante perdonable considerando lo bien que está todo lo demás, pero no quita que hubiera sido mucho mejor no tener esos cabos sueltos.

En resumen, aunque no es perfecta, Muted se acerca bastante a la perfección como producto final. Es una lectura increíble y profunda que a la vez puede ser sencilla, ideal para esta época del año por su encanto gótico, su vibrante orgullo y alegría queer, con un guion que solo se compara con la grandiosidad de las ilustraciones. Miranda Mundt hizo un trabajo asombroso con esta historia, ¡y estoy ansioso por ver qué más crea!

Welcome to one more edition of my hype for this story about sapphic polyamorous love that will be your next obsession. It certainly turned into one for me and I hope it is also the same for you because from the script to the art to the worldbuilding and the whole vibe of it, there is hardly anything I can complain about when it comes to Muted, by Miranda Mundt.

On the full moon of her 21st year, the young witch, Camille Severin, is expected to perform the traditional ritual to summon forth a winged demon for her families success and prosperity. But when the ritual goes wrong, it reveals the terrifying truths about herself and the secrets that threaten to tear her family apart.

I have said a lot of good things in my previous reviews of the first and second volume of the printed edition, so here is a summary of it: this series is perfect, it takes your breath away with a solid script, greatcharacter development, and a brightly colored art that complements but also contrasts with the gothic story that Miranda Mundt creates episode after episode.

Now, what you might not know comes at the end of the second season and then the third one: after the worldbuilding is done, all characters have been introduced, Muted goes wilder beyond your imagination. There is so much happening and yet it doesn't feel heavy, overwhelmed, or too much at any time because everything is still well organized in a way that doesn't affect the quality of the reading.

I do have to say there are just a few holes in the third season I was expecting to have a more definite answer for. Without going into spoilers, something about Dendro, Athalie, and a little bit about Alette, Camille's grandmother which we learn little about but whose actions have affected everything that happens to her. I would say that it is most that forgiveable considering how well everything else, but it doesn't change the fact it would have been much nicer not to have those loose threads.

In simpe words, although not perfect, Muted gets pretty close to it as a final product. It is an amazing, deep reading that can also be simple, perfect for this time of the year due to its Gothic charm, its blazing queer pride and joy, with a script that is only matched by the gradiosity of the artwork. Miranda Mundt did an amazing job with this story, and I'm eager to see what other things she creates!

Obviamente, la historia retoma justo donde la dejó el primer volumen. Sin embargo, el ritmo ha mejorado notablemente. Miranda Mundt logra un mejor equilibrio entre las escenas pausadas y las rápidas, que se complementan a la perfección, además de un gran desarrollo de los personajes de nuestras tres protagonistas: Camille, Dendro y Nyra, hasta el punto de que cada una brilla con luz propia.

Me encantó cómo la trama fue cambiando a medida que avanzaba en los episodios. Sin embargo, fue aún más sorprendente cómo, a pesar de tantos obstáculos simultáneos, Muted: Volume 2 no se convirtió en una lectura abrumadora en ningún momento. Era una especie de caos organizado, algo poco común, lo cual me parece un gran logro. Una vez que empecé a leer, no pude parar, salvo a la mitad, donde tuve que hacer una pausa, y luego devoré el resto tras recuperar el aliento.

El arte también fue impecable. Con un estilo consistente y colores vibrantes que contrastan con la oscuridad de la historia, el estilo de Miranda Mundt brilla con luz propia en todo momento. Incluso diría que se trata de un cómic gótico por los temas que explora: la muerte, el trauma, el abuso, la otredad, junto con la angustiosa sensación de que algo saltará en cualquier momento para destrozarlo todo.

En definitiva, Muted: Volume 2 es un libro que sorprende. Como lectura gótica, también transmite esperanza, felicidad, y cómo las cosas pueden mejorar, incluso en las peores circunstancias. El final los conmoverá profundamente, se los garantizo, con un capítulo adicional que aclara aún más las cosas. ¡Muy recomendable!

The reason is simple: It is so good I had to get more. The story obviously picks up right where it was left after the first volume. However, there is a change of pace for the better. Miranda Mundt makes sure that there's a better balance between the slow and the fast scenes, complementing each other, along with lots of character development in our three main girls, Camille, Dendro, and Nyra, to the point where they each shine even brighter on their own.

I loved how things started changing as I passed the episodes. However, it was even more surprising how so many obstacles happened at the same time without turning Muted: Volume 2 into an overwhelming reading at any point. It was a sort of organized chaos that you don't see that often, which I find as a huge accomplishment. I couldn't stop reading once I started, except for in the middle, where I had to take a break, and then snarfed the rest of it after getting a breath.

The art was also right on point. With a consistent style and bright colors that contrast with the dark nature of the story, Miranda Mundt's style shines just as much at all times. I would even say that this is a Gothic comic due to the themes it explores: death, trauma, abuse, othering, along with the crippling sensation that something will jump out at some point to rip everything to pieces.

All in all, Muted: Volume 2 is a book that surprises you. As a Gothic reading, it also shows you hope, it shows you happiness, and how things can change for the better, even in the worst of circumstances. The ending will break you, that I can guarantee, with an additional chapter that makes things much more obvious than before. Highly recommended!
