De vuelta a Reflejos / Back to Reflections

He tenido problemas con Reflejos, tengo que ser honesto.

El final antes de empezar

El camino ha sido tan difícil, especialmente luego de que varias autoras y yo retiramos nuestros libros de una editorial. Reflejos es muy especial para mí, y si bien estaba demasiado ilusionado con el contrato en su momento, las cosas no terminaron como me hubiese gustado. Me ha costado seguir adelante desde entonces.

Aunque he sacado libros desde entonces, sentía que me faltaba algo. Era como un vacío que no sabía llenar. Que te pase eso con tus libros no es cómodo, sino todo lo contrario. La mejor forma de describirlo es que no me sentía cómodo ni seguro volviendo al mundo de Reflejos.

Sin embargo, estos meses he estado pensando en Alynne, Pandora, Wiese, y todo el reino de Sel. He estado pensando en el mundo que siempre ha significado tanto para mí, en los personajes que aún recuerdo con cariño, y en los planes que tenía. Los planes que tengo, mejor dicho.

Volviendo a Sel

Esta semana me volví a sentar con ellos, con todo el grupo, y volví a su historia como si fuese un amigo que guardó distancia durante mucho tiempo. Una buena parte de la distancia también fue que la banda que me mantuvo inspirado mientras trabajaba en las ediciones de Reflejos empezó a usar IA. Sentí que una parte de la historia murió en ese momento, pero algo más tomó su lugar cuando volví a escuchar el álbum ICU, de Citizen Soldier.

El disco entero habla de la salud mental, las inseguridades, los traumas del pasado, el querer ser fuerte por alguien más, y temas similares, temas que toco en la novela. Es como volver a respirar después de mucho tiempo, pero con una calma que desconocí. Estoy emocionado, estoy feliz, pero siento demasiada paz trabajando de nuevo en este libro.

Voy a dar lo mejor de mí y luego buscar ayuda profesional antes de seguir enviándolo a editoriales. Ah, sí. Ese fue otro problema. Recibí 161 rechazos. Eso aún me duele, pero pasó a ser un dolor manejable, una molestia diaria, pero que ya no me detiene. Estoy pasando estos días editando y leyendo, y esperando lo mejor.

I’ve had some issues with Reflections, I have to be honest about that.

The End before the Beginning

The journey has been incredibly difficult, especially after several other authors and I pulled our books from a publishing house. Reflections is very special to me; while I was initially thrilled about the contract, things didn't end the way I had hoped. It’s been hard for me to move forward since then.

Even though I’ve released other books in the meantime, I felt like something was missing, a void I didn't know how to fill. It’s an uncomfortable feeling, quite the opposite, really, to experience that with your own books. The best way to describe it is that I didn't feel comfortable or secure returning to the world of Reflections.

However, over the last few months, I’ve been thinking about Alynne, Pandora, Wiese, and the entire kingdom of Sel. I’ve been thinking about the world that has always meant so much to me, the characters I still remember fondly, and the plans I had, or rather, the plans I have.

Returning to Sel

This week, I sat down with them again, with the whole group, and returned to their story like a friend who had kept his distance for a long time. A big part of that distance stemmed from the fact that the band that kept me inspired while I was editing Reflections started using AI. I felt like a part of the story died right then, but something else took its place when I listened again to the album ICU by Citizen Soldier.

The entire record deals with mental health, insecurities, past traumas, the desire to be strong for someone else, and similar themes, themes I also explore in the novel. It feels like breathing again after a long time, but with a sense of calm I hadn't known before. I’m excited and happy, but above all, I feel a profound sense of peace while working on this book again.

I’m going to give it my all and then seek professional help before I start sending it out to publishers again. Oh, right. That was another issue. I received 161 rejections. That still hurts, but the pain has become manageable, a daily annoyance, but one that no longer stops me. I’m spending these days editing and reading, and hoping for the best.

Esta obra recopilatoria reúne las experiencias de quienes han sido sometidos a terapias de conversión dirigidas a personas queer; es un esfuerzo por exponer la verdadera naturaleza de estas prácticas, pseudocientíficas, fraudulentas, ineficaces y profundamente traumáticas, así como por reconocer y escuchar a los supervivientes. Con las aportaciones de Gregory Elsasser-Chavez, Chaim Levin, Lexie Bean, Syre Klenke y muchas otras personas de todo el espectro LGBTQ+, esta obra busca garantizar que lo ocurrido no vuelva a suceder, y no sucederá, a las generaciones futuras.

Como ocurre con muchas antologías, hay historias que impactan más que otras y estilos que funcionan mejor que otros; sin embargo, esto no significa que solo las historias más desgarradoras sean las que importan. Significa que escuchamos voces diversas y que hay muchas personas recuperándose de estas experiencias. Cabe destacar la labor de Lucas F. W. Wilson como editor, ya que logró que conectara con la mayoría de los relatos.

Coincido con otra reseña en que incluir historias más recientes habría hecho que el libro destacara aún más. Por ejemplo, existe un caso muy reciente en el que la jueza Eboni K. Williams intervino en una demanda relacionada con la terapia de conversión entre un padre y su hijo gay; aunque obviamente era imposible incluirlo (el caso es de este año), demuestra que esta práctica sigue vigente. Todavía hay personas pasando por esto, y hubiera querido poder leer sus historias.

En términos generales, Shame-Sex Attraction es una obra necesaria para el mundo actual. Todavía hay demasiados estados en EE. UU. que no prohíben esta práctica atroz. Es preciso seguir aprendiendo sobre esta parte de la historia y amplificar las voces de los supervivientes, que es exactamente lo que Lucas F. W. Wilson ha logrado con este libro. Es tan necesario y relevante que lo recomiendo encarecidamente.

We are survivors.

We were subjected to dehumanizing practices by people who sought our erasure.

We believe telling our stories is both powerful and political.

This edited collection brings together the experiences of those who have been subjected to queer conversion therapy - it is an effort to expose conversion practices for what they are - pseudoscientific, bogus, ineffective, and wildly traumatic - and to recognise and listen to survivors. With contributions from Gregory Elsasser-Chavez, Chaim Levin, Lexie Bean, Syre Klenke, and many more from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum - this is an attempt to ensure that what happened within these pages cannot - and will not - happen to future generations.

This was a heavy book, and I mean it when I say it. I can read all sorts of nightmares when it comes to horror and fiction, but when it comes to real life, things are different. This is what people actually went through, very real damage and very real trauma. Although this made it hard to read at times, it added a new layer of meaning to Shame-Sex Attraction

As with many collections, there are stories that will impact more than others, styles that will work more than others, and this doesn't mean that the heaviest stories are the only ones that matter. It means that you will hear different voices. It means that there are a lot of people recovering from these experiences. Points for Lucas F. W. Wilson as the editor, however, because I was able to connect with most of the stories.

I agree with another reviewer in that more recent stories would have made the book stand out much more; however. There's a very recent case where Judge Eboni K. Williams dealt with a conversion therapy lawsuit between a father and his gay son, for example, and while this one was obviously impossible to include (the case is from this year), it means that this practice is still happening. There are still people going through this, and I would have liked to read these people's stories.

In general terms, Shame-Sex Attraction is necessary for today's world. There are still too many states here in the US that do not prohibit this horrendous practice. We need to keep learning about this part of history and amplifying survivors' voices, which is exactly what Lucas F. W. Wilson did with this book. It's so needed and so relevant that I cannot recommend it enough.

¡Estoy en Storyforge! / I'm in Storyforge!

Buenas buenas. Empezamos la semana con noticias.

Desde hace tiempo que he querido volver a escribir e ir compartiendo. Sin embargo, cierta plataforma anaranjada me tiene bastante insatisfecho. Si es cierto que hice muchas cosas en Wattpad, y no cierro la puerta a compartir cosas allí también en su momento. Sin embargo, hay una nueva plataforma para escritores que me gusta bastante: Storyforge.

El algoritmo de Wattpad me ha dado mucho de qué pensar. Además, si bien es cierto que muchas historias buenas empezaron allí, siento que últimamente cuesta encontrar algo realmente bueno, y hablo de algo más allá de la moda y el hype que pueda generar una persona.

Storyforge, por otro lado, hace la experiencia más interesante ofreciendo retos, recompensas, prioriza los comentarios constructivos, y ofrece un camino directo a la publicación de tus historias que toma en cuenta la interacción con los lectores y que tú como escritor también leas. Es bastante atractivo, si me preguntan. Claro que por ser nuevo hay varias actualizaciones en proceso, pero veo que como plataforma Storyforge está ganando cada vez más terreno.

Justo ahora, tengo dos historias terminadas, Llévame y Nightmare Fairytales (pronto subo la versión en español), y retomé Medicus bajo otra portada y otro nombre que representa mejor la historia: Vivos entre los Muertos, Alive Among the Dead.

¿Por qué estoy subiendo mis libros gratis allí? Porque quiero que puedan leerme sin importar el dinero. Siempre voy a agradecer que compren ejemplares de mis libros, y el sueño siempre va a ser dedicarme a escribir a tiempo completo. Sin embargo, el mundo es lugar demasiado difícil hoy en día. Permitirles a otros leer sin restricciones es mi forma de ayudar.

Además, los comentarios, corazones, y estrellas en Storyforge tienen mucho más peso que en Wattpad. Si no pueden apoyarme comprando los libros, pueden hacerlo dejando comentarios, dándole al corazón y la estrella, agregando mis historias a listas de lectura, y así sucesivamente. Hi everyone! We’re kicking off the week with some news.

I’ve been wanting to get back to writing and sharing my work for a while now. However, a certain "orange platform" has left me feeling quite dissatisfied. While it’s true I did a lot on Wattpad, and I’m not ruling out sharing content there again down the line, there’s a new platform for writers that I really like: Storyforge.

Wattpad’s algorithm has really given me food for thought. Also, while many great stories did start there, I feel like it’s getting harder lately to find something truly good, and I mean something that goes beyond just the trends or the hype a specific person might generate.

Storyforge, on the other hand, makes the experience more engaging by offering challenges and rewards, prioritizing constructive feedback, and providing a direct path to publication that takes into account reader interaction and your own engagement as a writer. It’s a pretty appealing setup, if you ask me. Of course, since it’s new, there are still updates in the works, but I can see the platform gaining more and more traction.

Right now, I have two completed stories, Llévame and Nightmare Fairytales (I’ll be uploading the Spanish version soon), and I’ve picked Medicus back up with a new cover and a title that better reflects the story: Alive Among the Dead, Vivos entre los Muertos.

Why am I uploading my books there for free? Because I want people to be able to read my work regardless of their financial situation. I’ll always be grateful when people buy copies of my books, and my dream has always been to write full-time. However, the world is a tough place these days. Letting others read without restrictions is my way of helping out.

Plus, comments, hearts, and stars on Storyforge carry much more weight than they do on Wattpad. If you can’t support me by buying the books, you can still help by leaving comments, hitting the heart and star buttons, adding my stories to reading lists, and so on. Every bit of support means the world to me and brings me closer to achieving that dream.

¿Conocen ese sentimiento de querer leer un libro por su portada? Eso fue lo que me pasó con Only Spell Deep, por Ava Morgyn. La historia es bastante oscura, muy turbia, que prometió bastante. Si bien no fue mi favorita, igual la disfruté mucho y quiero contarles todo al respecto. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia de lectura anticipada! Y mil disculpas por venir tan tarde con la reseña.

Me gustó la idea principal desde el principio. Todo ese trauma transgeneracional, todos los problemas de salud mental que lo acompañaron, y la historia de fondo de Jude(th) fueron fascinantes. El aspecto psicológico, sumado a la magia, era la receta perfecta para un personaje intrigante. Lo sentí por ella más de una vez por eso. Vi en ella muchos de los desafíos que enfrenta la mujer hoy en día, y eso siempre es un punto positivo para mí. Añadió una buena dosis de realismo a una historia llena de magia. Amo a Ava Morgyn por eso.

Sin embargo, el ritmo no fue el mejor para mí. Me encanta una lectura atmosférica, como fue el caso de Only Spell Deep. Sin embargo, hubo algunas escenas que parecieron innecesariamente largas, demasiado lentas para mi gusto. Este es un problema mío, así que, aunque esperaba que las cosas avanzaran más rápido la mayoría de las veces, no puedo negar que todo tenía un encanto: el hambre que impulsó muchas de las acciones de Jude(th), su deseo de pertenecer, mientras se redescubría a sí misma, fue excelente.

Ahora, con lo que sí tuve algunos problemas es que su abuelo siempre fue descrito como un monstruo, pero su abuela también era una grandísima egoísta. Lo encontré problemático porque mientras ella tuvo su momento de redención (resalten para leer; oculto por spoilers), su abuelo permaneció en la luz infame en la que fue arrojado. No estoy excusando sus acciones, pero considero justo que, si le damos a ella la oportunidad de explicarse, su abuelo también sea tomado en consideración como víctima de su abuela. Se sintió demasiado desequilibrado.

Considerándolo todo, fue una buena lectura. Lenta a veces, seguro, pero con una mitología que tenía suficiente profundidad (jeje) para un resultado más equilibrado. Disfruté cómo Jude(th) se recuperó, cómo todos los puntos finalmente se conectaron, especialmente el último 20% del libro, donde las cosas se volvieron mucho más interesantes. Perfecto para los fanáticos de lecturas más lentas y atmosféricas que exploran el lado más oscuro del trauma transgeneracional, Only Spell Deep de Ava Morgyn es una excelente lectura para esta época del año, a medida que las noches se acercan y las leyendas se sienten más reales.

Ava Morgyn's Only Spell Deep is a novel that takes readers on a journey into a dark, glittering world of magic, a place where power should never be caged and misplaced trust can have deadly consequences.

I liked the main idea from the beginning. All that transgenerational trauma, all the mental health issues that came with it, and Jude(th)'s backstory was nothing if not fascinating. The psychological aspect of it, added to the magic, was a perfect recipe for an intriguing character. I felt for her more than once because of that. I saw many of the challenges that women face today in her, and that is always a positive point for me. It added a good dose of realism to a story full of magic. I love Ava Morgyn for that.

The pace wasn't the best for me, however. I love an atmospheric reading, which was the case with Only Spell Deep. However, there were some scenes that felt unnecessarily long, too slow for my taste. This is a me problem, so even though I was expecting things to move faster more often than not, I cannot deny there was a charm to all of it: the hunger that drove many of Jude(th)'s actions, her desire to belong, as she rediscovered herself, was excellent.

Now, what I did have some issues with is that her grandfather was always described as a monster, but her grandmother was also a selfish pill. I found it problematic because while she had her moment of redemption (highlight to read; hidden due to spoilers), her grandfather stayed in the infamous light he was cast in. I'm not excusing his actions, but I consider it fair that, if we're giving her a chance to explain herself, her grandfather should also be taken into consideration as the victim of her grandmother. It felt too unbalanced.

All in all, it was a good reading. Slow at times for sure, but with a mythology that had enough depth (hehe) for a more balanced result. I enjoyed how Jude(th) recovered herself, how all the dots got connected eventually, especially that last 20% or so of the book, where things became much more interesting. Perfect for fans of slower, atmospheric readings that explore the darkest side of transgenerational trauma, Ava Morgyn's Only Spell Deep is a great reading for this time of the year, as the nights get closer and the legends feel more real.

Pensé que no volvería a escribir una de estas entradas, pero henos aquí.

Resulta que las compras compulsivas están bajo control, así que no estoy preocupado por las finanzas. Sin embargo, hay una biblioteca gratuita cerca de donde vivo, y el canto de la sirena sigue siendo fuerte. No tenemos problemas con el dinero ahora, pero sí con el espacio.

Las Little Free Libraries, o Pequeñas Bibliotecas Gratuitas en español, son una iniciativa de la fundación del mismo nombre para permitir el acceso a libros para los niños y miembros de comunidades subrepresentadas. La idea inicial es tomar un libro y dejar un libro a cambio, pero muchos alientan a los participantes a simplemente tomar los libros. Ese es el caso de la dueña de la biblioteca cerca de mi casa.

Suena utópico, pero inconscientemente, empecé a tomar y tomar y tomar hasta que me di cuenta de que tengo más de los que puedo leer en este momento. Fue un golpe para mi autoestima y mi ego, porque pensé que estaba mucho más controlado que esto. Leer más sobre lo que la LFL representa, sobre su misión, me hizo reaccionar aún más, porque es imposible no sentir que le estás quitando el libro a otra persona que sí que lo necesita.

Esto me hizo pensar en algo: es la sensación de soledad lo que me hizo caer de nuevo en esta compulsión. Porque vivo con mi familia y tengo a mis amigos en el teléfono y algunos cerca, pero la depresión no entiende de eso. La depresión solo te susurra al oído sin dejarte responder la mayor parte del tiempo.

Lo que estoy haciendo ahora parece funcionar: un libro corto, y uno largo, incluyendo las copias para reseñar que tengo acumuladas. Lento pero seguro, la pila de pendientes está bajando. Además, estoy aplicando más a menudo mis consejos para leer más y vencer una adicción, que siguen ayudando.

The two print, fiction books I'm focusing on for now.

I thought I wouldn't be writing one of these posts again, but here we are.

It turns out my compulsive shopping is under control, so I'm not worried about my finances. However, there is a free library near where I live, and the siren song remains strong. We don't have any issues with money right now, but we certainly have issues with space.

Little Free Libraries are an initiative by the non-profit of the same name designed to provide access to books for children and members of underrepresented communities. The original concept is to "take a book, leave a book" in exchange; however, many hosts encourage participants to simply take the books without leaving one in return. Such is the case with the owner of the library located near my home.

It sounds utopian, but unconsciously, I began taking and taking and taking until I realized I had accumulated more books than I could possibly read at this moment. It was a blow to my self-esteem and my ego, as I had believed I possessed far greater self-control than this. Reading more about what the LFL stands for, about its mission, made me reflect even more deeply, for it is impossible not to feel as though you are taking a book away from someone else who truly needs it.

This realization sparked a thought: it is the sense of loneliness that caused me to relapse into this compulsive behavior. Although I live with my family, and I have friends I can reach by phone, with some living nearby, depression does not heed such things. Depression merely whispers in your ear, rarely allowing you the chance to answer back.

The strategy I am currently employing seems to be working: I alternate between reading one short book and one long one, a rotation that includes the review copies I have accumulated. Slowly but surely, my pile of unread books is shrinking. Furthermore, I am more consistently applying the tips for reading more and beat an addiction, strategies that continue to prove helpful.

I will report back on the effects, progress, or any setbacks next month. Until then!

Buenas buenas, gente bonita. Espero que estén de humor para una lectura un tanto inusual. Luego de tanto horror, quise equilibrar un poco con una historia más dulce, más romántica, y sin nada de tripas y sangre. Estoy hablando de la enternecedora What If I Said, "I Love You"? 1, por Kumosoku. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Una serie BL pura de amigos y amantes de la infancia con ilustraciones detalladas, lindas y dinámicas, perfecta para los fanáticos de Love on the Horizon, My Summer of You y Sasaki y Miyano.

Cuando eran niños, Kazuho y Tokio eran lo suficientemente cercanos como para llevarse a cuestas el uno al otro. Pero ahora, en la escuela secundaria, se ha abierto un abismo entre ellos, un abismo que los separa cada vez más. Es una distancia que Kazuho mantiene a propósito, para evitar revelar los nuevos sentimientos por Tokio que han estado creciendo en su corazón. En un mundo donde muchas tramas se vuelven super complicadas, que Kumosoku base el encanto de esta en lo sencillo es un éxito para mí.

El arte es igual de atractivo porque combina con el tono de la historia en todo momento. Aunque no es un estilo limpio, le añade ese toque realista que llevó la lectura a otro nivel. What If I Said, "I Love You"? 1 se volvió lo suficientemente atmosférico como para hacerme olvidar de las responsabilidades del día a día para hacerme soñar despierto con el mismísimo día a día. ¿Idealista por momentos? Puede que un poco. Pero efectivo de todas formas.

Sí me hubiese gustado que fuese un poco más pausado, eso sí. Hubo momentos que se sintieron innecesariamente apresurados, como si Kumosoku quisiera llegar a escenas más emocionantes de dibujar. Lo entiendo por completo, me pasa muy seguido, y aunque puedo hacerme la vista gorda por (aparentemente) ser su primer trabajo, no niego que el efecto podría haber sido mejor.

Sin embargo, se disfruta muchísimo. What If I Said, "I Love You"? 1 es una historia para soñar despierto por su inocencia y su pureza, sus personajes tan humanos, sus inseguridades, sus anhelos, y la forma en que todo se desarolla. Voy a esperar con ansias los siguientes volúmenes para saber cómo sigue todo ente los personajes, y les recomiendo hacer lo mismo.

Hello hello, beautiful people. I hope you're in the mood for a somewhat unusual read. After so much horror, I wanted to balance it a little with a sweeter, more romantic story, and without any guts and blood. I'm talking about the heartwarming What If I Said, "I Love You"? 1, by Kumosoku. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

A pure childhood friends-to-lovers BL series with detailed, cute, and dynamic artwork, perfect for fans of Love on the Horizon, My Summer of You, and Sasaki and Miyano.

As kids, Kazuho and Tokio were close enough to give each other piggyback rides. But now, in high school, a gulf has opened between them—one that’s carrying them further and further apart. It’s a distance Kazuho is keeping on purpose, to keep from revealing the new feelings for Tokio that have been growing in his heart. But one day, Kazuho falls asleep in class, those feelings come spilling out—and it’s all Tokio’s fault…

This was a beautiful story! As realistic as it is touching, Kazuho and Tokyo win the reader's heart in a short time because of how genuine their chemistry is. It is not a story where anything innovative or transcendental happens beyond recovering the charm of daily life. In a world where many plots become super complicated, the fact that Kumosoku bases its charm on simplicity is a success for me.

The art is just as appealing because it matches the tone of the story throughout. Although it is not a clean style, it adds that realistic touch that took reading to another level. What If I Said, "I Love You"? 1 became atmospheric enough to make me forget about day-to-day responsibilities to make me daydream about day-to-day life itself. Idealistic at times? Maybe a little. But still effective.

Yes, I would have liked it to be a little slower, yes. There were moments that felt unnecessarily rushed, as if Kumosoku wanted to get to more exciting scenes to draw. I completely understand, it happens to me very often, and although I can turn a blind eye to it because (apparently) it is their first job, I don't deny that the effect could have been better.

However, it is very enjoyable. What If I Said, "I Love You"? 1 is a story to daydream about because of its innocence and its purity, its very human characters, their insecurities, their desires, and the way in which everything develops. I'm going to look forward to the next volumes to see how everything goes between the characters, and I recommend you do the same.

About / Sobre Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender

Hace unas semanas vi que se filtró la película completa de Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. Una secuela directa de la serie de Nickelodeon con la que muchos crecimos era un estreno muy esperado por todos los fans y el equipo. Sin embargo, terminó en redes sociales, principalmente en Twitter, después de varios atrasos y de la decisión de Paramount de no darle espacio en las salas de cine, sino únicamente en Paramount+.

¿Por qué pasó esto? Porque con un fandom no se juega. Vamos a hablar de números primero que nada:

• 
  1,1 millones de espectadores vieron cada nuevo episodio desde el inicio de la serie en 2005 hasta el final en 2008.
• 5,6 millones vieron el episodio con mayor audiencia: el final de la segunda temporada, en diciembre de 2006.
• La cuenta oficial en Instagram, @avatarlegends, tiene 962 mil seguidores.
• La adaptación de Netflix estuvo en el top de los más vistos en Netflix por dos semanas cuando se estrenó la primera temporada.
• Los libros oficiales han mantenido el fandom vivo por años.
• La Leyenda de Korra, la secuela oficial, registró un promedio de 4,5 millones de espectadores durante su transmisión, y se posicionó como el estreno de una serie animada más visto de Nickelodeon en tres años.

En pocas palabras, Avatar es una franquicia exitosa desde que empezó. Los fanáticos amamos esta serie, crecimos con ella, aprendimos de ella, y ahora somos adultos que compartimos sus enseñanzas a las nuevas generaciones.

Paramount no necesita asegurar ganancias atrasando el estreno, buscando generar expectativas, y luego faltarnos el respeto al hacer de esta película contenido exclusivo en su propia plataforma. Los fanáticos la queremos, la estamos pidiendo a gritos desde hace años, y estamos listos para apoyarla siempre y cuando nos respeten la cara.

Si aprendimos algo luego de tantos episodios, libros, y material de los fans para los fans, es que lo justo y correcto no siempre es fácil de hacer. Así como todos, estoy deseoso de ver qué pasa Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, pero no si esto significa irrespetar a todos los que trabajaron tan duro en ella. Este universo se merece algo mejor.

Cuesta, porque nos encanta todo lo que tenga que ver con Avatar. Cuesta, porque sabemos que está allí mismo. Pero justamente porque cuesta es que vale la pena esperar. Como fandom, hay que demostrar a Paramount por millonésima vez que nos importa esta historia, este universo, y que queremos lo mejor, que los respetamos y así mismo demandamos respeto de su parte tanto para nosotros como para Avatar.

A few week ago, I saw that the full Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie was leaked. As a direct sequel to the Nickelodeon series many of us grew up with, its release was highly anticipated by both fans and the creative team. However, it ended up circulating on social media—primarily Twitter—following multiple delays and Paramount’s decision to bypass a theatrical release in favor of streaming exclusively on Paramount+.

Why did this happen? Because you don't mess with this fandom. Let’s talk numbers first:

• 
  1.1 million viewers watched each new episode from the series' debut in 2005 through its finale in 2008.
• 5.6 million watched the highest-rated episode: the Season 2 finale in December 2006.
• The official Instagram account, @avatarlegends, has 962,000 followers.
• The Netflix adaptation topped the platform's most-watched list for two weeks when its first season premiered.
• Official books have kept the fandom alive for years.
• *The Legend of Korra*, the official sequel, averaged 4.5 million viewers during its run and ranked as Nickelodeon’s most-watched animated series premiere in three years.

Simply put, Avatar has been a successful franchise from the very beginning. We fans love this series; we grew up with it, learned from it, and are now adults sharing its lessons with new generations.

Paramount doesn't need to try to secure profits by delaying the release to build hype, only to disrespect us by making the movie exclusive to its own platform. We fans want it, we’ve been clamoring for it for years, and we are ready to support it, provided we are treated with respect.

Both parties are in the wrong here, however: Paramount, for wanting to guarantee success for a film that is already a hit; and the man who decided to leak Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender after Paramount sent it to him by mistake, an act that shows a lack of respect for the fans by failing to professionally safeguard the film, as well as for everyone who worked on it for five years. There's no need to try to generate more money when Avatar is involved. It's illogical, if not downright stupid.

So, what should we do as fans? Don't watch the leaked film. If we’ve learned anything after so many episodes, books, and fan-made creations, it’s that doing what is right isn't always easy. Like everyone else, I am eager to see Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, but not if it means disrespecting the people who worked so hard on it. This universe deserves better.

It’s hard, because we love everything to do with Avatar. It’s hard, because we know it’s right there within reach. But precisely because it is hard, it is worth the wait. As a fandom, we need to show Paramount for the millionth time that we care about this story and this universe, that we want the best for it, and that we respect them while demanding respect in return both for us and for Avatar.

¡Prepárate para una mezcla de situaciones disparatadas y momentos conmovedores en esta adaptación a novela gráfica de un popular webcómic!

Tras despertar en medio de la nada, un joven es reclutado a la fuerza para trabajar en el Hotel Limbo como su nuevo botones (BellBoy, o «BB», para abreviar). Entre máscaras mágicas, gatos gigantes, un personal misterioso y un hotel que no para de moverse, BB pronto descubrirá que ocuparse del «equipaje» cobra un sentido muy distinto cuando todos los huéspedes están muertos.

En este debút de la serie, el guionista Ben Harel colabora con 28 artistas (!) de todo el mundo para dar vida a una historia sobre la muerte. Mientras la comedia se entrelaza con el drama y el misterio, cada cambio de tono y cada frontera difusa se ven realzados por un estilo visual en constante evolución, creando una mezcla de géneros repleta de aventuras mortales (y relacionadas con la muerte).

Si leyeron la sinopsis, ya saben que hay 28 artistas involucrados en este proyecto. Y si no la leyeron, pues ya lo saben. Tantos estilos diferentes de dibujo, de coloración, de diseño, propuestas visuales tan distintas como hermosas. ¡Nunca había visto algo así en un cómic! Aunque sí es cierto que se trata más bien de un webcómic, el que sea publicado en físico es prueba del éxito de Ben Harel.

Hotel Limbo Book 1 empieza sencilla pero no tarda en ponerse más y más interesante. Los personajes van teniendo sus momentos de estrellato, aunque sin dudas el estrellato se lo lleva BB. Además, podría parecer arriesgado juntar tantos estilos en un solo proyecto, pero el guión se adapta a la perfección a cada cambio que ocurre.

Lo que más me gustó fue justamente eso, la forma en que la historia evoluciona, la forma en que Ben Harel juega con el lector, y cómo los personajes evolucionan sin perder su escencia. BB es cada vez más humano y no solo un chiste andante, por ejemplo, y aunque sus intenciones son nobles, termina haciendo mucho daño en su momento. Esto es un punto clave tanto para él como para la historia, así que no voy a decir mucho al respecto.

Considerándolo todo, Hotel Limbo Book 1 es un proyecto precioso, riesgoso, original, cuyo encanto combina la nostalgia con lo moderno. Me encantó de principio a fin, así que se lo recomiendo a todos los que estén interesados en la fantasía oscura, fantasías modernas, y la exploración de lo que significa tener un poder más allá de lo posible. Pone muchas cosas en perspectivas, especialmente cuando quieres ayudar a tantas personas como puedas.

Hijinks and heartbreak await as this fan-favorite online comic becomes a gorgeous graphic novel!

After awakening in the middle of nowhere, a young man is forcefully inducted into the Hotel Limbo as its new bellboy (“BB” for short). Faced with magical masks, giant cats, a mysterious staff, and a hotel that just won’t sit still, BB will soon learn that helping with “baggage” means something very different when all the guests are dead.

In this series debut, writer Ben Harel teams up with 28 artists (!) from around the world to breathe life into a story about death. As comedy dances with drama and mystery, every tonal shift and blurred line is accentuated by an ever-changing visual style, creating a genre-bending medley of deadly (and death-ly) adventures.

If you’ve read the synopsis, you already know there are 28 artists involved in this project. And if you haven’t, well, now you know. There is such a wide array of drawing, coloring, and design styles, visual approaches that are as distinct as they are beautiful. I’ve never seen anything quite like it in a comic! Although it's actually a webcomic, its physical release is a testament to Ben Harel’s success.

Hotel Limbo Book 1 starts off simply but quickly becomes increasingly compelling. The characters all get their moments to shine, though BB undoubtedly steals the spotlight. Bringing so many styles together in a single project might seem risky, but the script adapts perfectly to every shift that occurs.

That was exactly what I liked most: the way the story evolves, the way Ben Harel plays with the reader, and how the characters grow without losing their essence. BB, for instance, becomes increasingly human rather than just a walking punchline; while his intentions are noble, he ends up causing significant harm at one point. This is a pivotal moment for both him and the story, so I won’t say too much about it.

All in all, Hotel Limbo Book 1 is a beautiful, daring, and original project that blends nostalgia with a modernity. I loved it from start to finish, so I highly recommend it to anyone interested in dark fantasy, modern fantasy, and exploring what it means to wield power that defies the limits of the possible. It puts a lot of things into perspective, especially when you want to help as many people as you can.

Hoy vengo super tarde, pero con un libro que me encantó. Es una historia de adolescentes descarriladas, pactos de sangre, criaturas condenadas, y enemistades del colegio que hierven la sangre. Ya saben lo mucho que me gustan las historias de la adolescencia, así que decidí darle una oportunidad a Doe, por Rebecca Barrow. Ustedes deberían hacer lo mismo. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme un ejemplar de lectura anticipada!

Una apasionante novela de terror juvenil (crossover) perfecta para los seguidores de Krystal Sutherland y Tiffany Jackson, en la que la capitana del equipo de animadoras de un instituto se ve envuelta en una amarga rivalidad y recurre a una antigua criatura sobrenatural en busca de ayuda, sin saber que acaba de hacer un pacto con el diablo y que podría perder todo lo que le importa, incluida su vida.

Maris Larsen es la capitana del equipo de animadoras del instituto West Eaton. Es la favorita de la entrenadora y el equipo la adora. Pertenecer al equipo la hace sentirse especial, poderosa. Cuando dirige a las chicas en la pista, Maris no tiene que pensar en su vida sin futuro en un pueblo sin salida. Ambas tienen un sentido de la justicia y de lo correcto bastante gris. Me recordó mucho a los antihéroes, aquellos que hacen lo incorrecto por las causas correctas, aunque las acciones de Maris no se pueden justificar.

La construcción del mundo me gustó bastante porque transmite esa desolación, esa claustrofobia que los personajes sienten durante toda la novela. Es una ciudad de la que realmente parece no haber salida, en donde los días están contados, y aunque aún así se encuentra un semblante de paz, sabes que no es más que temporal. Esto jugó muy a favor de Rebecca Barrow porque me adentré casi de inmediato.

Sin embargo, hubo momentos en que me sentí muy en la superficie cuando más quería ir al fondo de lo que los personajes sentían. Aunque se entiende qué es lo que está pasando y lo que sienten, quería sumergirme más de lo que la autora permitió en algunas ocasiones. Sin embargo, recuerden que leí una copia previa a publicación, así que confío en que el resultado final haya resuelto esto.

Con un ritmo trepidante que no te deja ir desde el inicio, Doe es una lectura perfecta para amantes del terror juvenil con varios giros de trama que sorprenden a medida que avanzas. Rebecca Barrow tiene una pluma excelente que se adapta a los diferentes narradores de la novela, pero es con Maris y el equipo con los que brilla más por lo intenso que es todo desde esa mentalidad de colmena, esa mente compartida, dejando en evidencia el lazo tan fuerte como tóxico entre estas chicas. Sencillamente brillante.

In Maris’s dreams, she and Doe form a bond, but Maris doesn’t know the creature from her dreams is real. Maris doesn’t understand the danger she’s in. She only knows Doe has promised her a way to win her battle with Genevieve. But for Maris to win, someone has to die, and the only real winner in the end will be Doe.

This came as a surprise to me because, when I requested the book, there was no mention anywhere that it was a novel in verse. I’m not particularly well-versed in this genre, but I really enjoyed the read because the characters are more than just interesting: they are complex, especially Doe and Maris. Both possess a rather ambiguous sense of justice and right and wrong. It reminded me a lot of anti-heroes, those who do the wrong thing for the right reasons, though Maris’s actions are impossible to justify.

I really liked the world-building; it conveys the desolation and claustrophobia the characters feel throughout the novel. It is a city that truly seems to offer no escape, where days are numbered, and even when a semblance of peace is found, you know it is only temporary. This worked very much in Rebecca Barrow’s favor, as I was drawn in almost immediately.

However, there were moments when I felt things remained too superficial just when I wanted to delve deeper into the characters' emotions. While it is clear what is happening and how they feel, there were times I wanted to immerse myself further than the author allowed. That said, keep in mind that I read a pre-publication copy, so I trust the final version has addressed this.

With a breakneck pace that grips you from the very beginning, Doe is a perfect read for fans of YA horror, featuring various plot twists that surprise you as you go. Rebecca Barrow’s writing is excellent and adapts well to the novel’s different narrators, but she truly shines with Maris and the group; the intensity of their hive-mind mentality—that shared consciousness—highlights a bond between these girls that is as strong as it is toxic. Simply brilliant.
