Manga: Laughing Under the Clouds Vol. 1

Under the curse of Orochi, the great demon serpent reborn every 300 years, Japan has been shrouded in clouds for as long as anyone can remember...
The era of the samurai is at an end, and carrying swords has been outlawed. To combat the rising crime rates, an inescapable prison was built in the middle of Lake Biwa. When brothers Tenka, Soramaru and Chutaro Kumo are hired to capture and transport offenders to their final lodgings in this prison, they unexpectedly find themselves faced with a greater destiny than any of them could have imagined.

When I read the synopsis of this manga, I admit that I wasn't very attracted to it because I have never been a fan of samurais (not even Rurouni Kenshin), but I still decided to give it a try, and it turns out that I'm loving it! Although the story of the Kumo brothers seems like one more shonen at first, I realized immediately that this is not the case.

In this volume, we don't get to know much about the Kumo family, only that they have a not very favorable dynamic towards younger siblings, and we are presented with a dark fantasy world with potential. In addition to this, there's a story that serves as a prequel to the main plot that is beautiful, to be honest. At first, I was worried that it had a lot of fan service, as in many shonen mangas, and again I swallowed my words.

The development is quite fast but also natural, I would say with a very comfortable rhythm. Although it's a story of action, magic, fights, and ancient curses, we find that there's also room for family drama, fleeting romances, and even sentimental tragedies. A pretty complete picture, if you ask me.

If I had to point to one detail that I didn't like, it was that the most important action scene in this volume was a bit difficult to follow. Pages and scenes like this have always been hard for me, so it's more a thing of mine and not a failure of the manga as such, but I do feel like there could have been a little more order. Outside of that detail, Laughing Under the Clouds Vol. 1 is a read that you easily fall in love with.

Greetings and hugs!
