Pensando / Thinking: Shonen, Shojo, OMG!

¿Y ustedes? ¿Alguno por el cual sientan preferencia?

¡Un saludo y un abrazo!

Good morning, beautiful people. I hope you are doing well and having a good week. I have been thinking that, although I have already reviewed several mangas for a while now, I have not really bothered to explain the genres that compose it, or at least those that sound more on social networks and that are exclusive to manga.

I think we've all heard the words shonen and shojo at some point, and maybe even seinen and josei, but what does each mean specifically? Most of all, it has to do with the audience to which each manga is directed, very similar to the aforementioned gender issue.

We generally go first: shonen and shojo are aimed at teenagers, while Seinen and Josei are for young adults. However, in Japan these genres also come with certain characteristics because boys are expected to like some things and girls others.

On the one hand, there is shonen, which is based on adventure, large doses of action, sports, fighting, fantasy, and male protagonists. Some of the best-known examples are Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Hunter x Hunter, Death Note (although I consider it more seisen), and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. On the other hand, shojo focuses on beauty, the delicacy of the characters, the simple, romantic, emotional plots. Some that you will recognize are Cards Captor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Mew Mew Power, Corrector Yui, and many more.

Now, seinen and josei are more for young adults, a more mature audience but still young. Seinen is aimed at male audiences and they tend to be much more violent, but with themes that range from politics to religion, such as xxxHolic, Berserk, Excel Saga, Ghost in the Shell, Hellsing, Initial D, Tokyo Ghoul, and some include JoJo in this category as well. Josei, on the other hand, remains emotional and with a strong focus on emotions, but with more action than shojo, such as Paradise Kiss, Princess Jellyfish, Usagi Drop, and Eden of the East, among others.

If you ask me, I think it's obvious that shonen has dominated the manga and anime industry in America. It has had a very good reception and almost all the series that we know can enter this genre. Even when it comes to shojo, I had to include only fantasy series because they were the only ones that I recognized and that, I'm sure, they are the only ones that you will recognize.

Although shonen and shojo are supposed to be different, I have no problem watching one or the other. I enjoyed both Naruto and Mew Mew Power, and I love Death Note and Cards Captor Sakura, but Bleach and Sailor Moon don't call me in the least. I am curious about seinen, mainly about xxxHolic, I really liked Hellsing, and I want to understand what the hype of Tokyo Ghoul was about. Although I have a certain preference for shonen, I see myself enjoying more genres in the future. What about you? Any you have any preference for?

Greetings and hugs!
