Cómic: Basilisk #5

Buenos días, gente bonita. ¿Cómo pasaron ese fin de semana? Yo estuve súper ocupado con un proyecto del que pronto les contaré más. ^^ Sin embargo, hoy vengo para algo diferente: un cómic muy entretenido y que me tiene intrigado con qué puede llegar a pasar. Se trata de Basilisk #5. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia a cambio de una reseña honesta!

Después de la impactante conclusión del último número, los miembros restantes de Chimera se reagrupan, resentidos. Después de una confesión profética de Vanessa, ella dice que tienen un destino que cumplir... un sacrificio. Mientras tanto, Regan duda en contarle a Hannah sobre la profecía, pero antes de que pueda hacerlo, se siente abrumada por un dolor auditivo, y Hannah escucha una voz inquietantemente familiar mientras intenta ayudar a Regan...

Luego de leer ese primer volumen, tenía muchas ganas de seguir con la serie y saber qué pasaría con los personajes. En este número vemos un poco más de cómo se desarrolla la dinámica de Chimera, este grupo de superhumanos que planean algo a gran escala. Aunque no hay una historia tan sólida como antes, sí sirve para profundizar más en la mente de cada personaje.

Me llamó mucho la atención la forma en que trabajan los poderes de este grupo. Hay cierto toque de inmortalidad en todo esto, y no puedo evitar pensar que pronto conoceremos de qué realmente son capaces cada uno. Hannah se va ganando mi admiración, por otro lado, y siento que Regan aún no juega todas sus cartas. Aquí hay algo escondido, y parece que lo que viene es buenísimo.

El arte sigue siendo excelente, con colores bastante gráficos, y estridente cuando debe serlo, aunque sin aturdir al lector. Sigue habiendo un equilibrio bien logrado entre guión y arte, así que la lectura se te pasa en una sentada no solo por lo corta que es. Yo diría que mi única queja es que no hubo mayor acción en este número, sino que fue una narración muy pausada, al punto de no sentir emoción o sorpresa en los momentos clave.

Fuera de eso, sigo muy interesado en saber qué será de esta gente. Basilisk #5 es un número que se te pasa volando por el trabajo en equipo que tienen sus creadores. Ninguno sobrepasa al otro, cada uno aportando a lo que podría ser una excelente historia de horror. Aunque esta vez fue un poco lenta, la trama se mantiene interesante y atrapante.

After the shocking conclusion of the last issue, the remaining members of Chimera regroup, sullen. After a prophetic confession from Vanessa, she says they have a destiny to fulfill... a sacrifice. Meanwhile, Regan is hesitant to tell Hannah about the prophecy, but before she can, she's overwhelmed by auditory pain, and Hannah hears a hauntingly familiar voice as she tries to help Regan...

After reading that first volume, I really wanted to continue with the series and find out what would happen to the characters. In this issue, we see a little more of how the Chimera dynamic unfolds, this group of superhumans planning something on a grand scale. Although there's not a story as solid as before, it does serve to delve deeper into the mind of each character.

I was very struck by the way the powers of this group work. There is a certain touch of immortality in all of this, and I can't help but think that soon we will know what each one is really capable of. Hannah is gaining my admiration, on the other hand, and I feel like Regan hasn't played all her cards yet. There's something hidden here, and it seems that what is coming is very good.

The art is still excellent, with quite graphic colors, and strident when it should be, but without overwhelming the reader. There's still a well-achieved balance between script and art, so the reading goes by in one sitting not only because of how short it is. I would say that my only complaint is that there wasn't much action in this number, but that it was a very slow narration, to the point of not feeling emotion or surprise at key moments.

Other than that, I'm still very interested in knowing what will become of these people. Basilisk #5 is an issue that flies by because of the teamwork that its creators have. Neither surpasses the other, each adding to what could be an excellent horror story. Although this time it was a bit slow, the plot remains interesting and engaging.

¡Mira cómo las cosas empiezan a calentarse de verdad en la cocina en esta dulce novela gráfica para nuevos adultos!

Ahora que terminó la universidad, el graduado de inglés Ben Cook está buscando trabajo en busca de algo... cualquier cosa... relacionada con su pasión por la lectura y la escritura. Pero entrevista tras entrevista, comité de contratación tras comité de contratación, Ben pronto descubre que conseguir el trabajo de sus sueños no será tan fácil como pensaba. ¿Corrección de pruebas? ¿Periodismo? ¿Redacción? La historia es bastante sencilla: conocemos a Ben y a su grupo de amigos cuando empiezan a buscar empleo luego de terminar sus estudios, cosa que me encanta. Buscar trabajo es ridículamente traumático, y me vi en muchos de los diálogos de Ben, exhausto por no conseguir nada. Es uno de los problemas más grandes que hay en el mundo de hoy, y aunque son escenas cargadas de humor negro, la frustración es palpable.

De allí en adelante, el tema del romance se complementa bastante con el de la vida diaria, mostrando a un muchacho que trata de hacer lo mejor que puede sin saber qué quiere a ciencia cierta. El guión es excelente en este aspecto, cuidando los detalles y manteniendo una coherencia en todo momento. Aunque simple, la historia se desarrolla con mucho encanta, y el arte hace imposible dejar de leer hasta que llegas al final.

Diría que la escena en la clase de yoga me pareció un poco tediosa, además de que hubo momentos en que el cómic se volvía más juvenil que cualquier otra cosa. Aunque me encantó el humor en toda la historia, esperaba algo más maduro, no tan ligero, luego de leer que es una novela gráfica new adult. Más bien diría que es una historia universitaria con estilo juvenil.

El tiempo se pasa volando con Chef's Kiss, y aunque el final es súper predecible, es el desarrollo lo que más importa, los diálogos honestos, los temas de independencia e identidad, junto con los lazos familires y amistosos. Ahora... Mención especial al cerdo que se robó el estrellato más de una vez, y a la conciencia de Ben. ¡Amor eterno a esos dos!

Watch things start to really heat up in the kitchen in this sweet, queer, new adult graphic novel! 

Now that college is over, English graduate Ben Cook is on the job hunt looking for something…anything…related to his passion for reading and writing. But interview after interview, hiring committee after hiring committee, Ben soon learns getting the dream job won’t be as easy as he thought. Proofreading? Journalism? Copywriting? Not enough experience. It turns out he doesn’t even have enough experience to be a garbage collector! But when Ben stumbles upon a “Now Hiring—No Experience Necessary” sign outside a restaurant, he jumps at the chance to land his first job. Plus, he can keep looking for a writing job in the meantime. He’s actually not so bad in the kitchen, but he will have to pass a series of cooking tests to prove he’s got the culinary skills to stay on full-time. But it’s only temporary…right? 

When Ben begins developing a crush on Liam, one of the other super dreamy chefs at the restaurant, and when he starts ditching his old college friends and his old writing job plans, his career path starts to become much less clear.

The story is quite simple: we meet Ben and his group of friends when they start looking for a job after finishing their studies, which I love. Looking for work is ridiculously traumatic, and I saw myself in many of Ben's dialogues, exhausted from achieving nothing. It is one of the biggest problems in the world today, and although they are scenes full of black humor, the frustration is palpable.

From then on, the theme of romance is quite complementary to that of daily life, showing a boy who tries to do his best without knowing what he wants for sure. The script is excellent in this regard, taking care of the details and maintaining consistency at all times. Although simple, the story unfolds with a lot of charm, and the art makes it impossible to stop reading until you reach the end.

I would say I found the yoga class scene a bit tedious, plus there were times when the comic became more youthful than anything else. Although I loved the humor throughout the story, I expected something more mature, not so light, after reading that it is a new adult graphic novel. I'd rather say it's a college story with a youthful flair.

Time flies by with Chef's Kiss, and although the ending is super predictable, it's the development that matters the most, the honest dialogues, the themes of independence and identity, along with family and friendship ties. Now...Special mention to the pig who stole stardom more than once, and to Ben's conscience. Eternal love to those two!

Estoy por Cortarme / I'm About to Cut

Buenos días, Nocturnos. Hoy les comparto una entrada bastante personal y que me gustó bastante. Escribí esto recordando cómo me sentía emocionalmente cada vez que estaba a punto de cortarme, de rendirme y dejar que todo fuese en vano. No fue una o dos, sino varias veces en que tuve que domar a mis demonios y evitar perder la batalla. Algunas veces no fui tan fuerte, y me tocó lidiar con las heridas, pero muchas veces sí pude, y sé que aquellos que estén lidiando con el mismo problema pueden hacerlo también. Igual que antes, les dejo esta entrada en español e inglés esperando que ayude a los que la neceistan y sirva para educar a los que no al respecto.

Good morning, Nightlies. Today I share with you a quite personal entry and that I quite liked. I wrote this remembering how I felt emotionally every time I was about to cut myself, to give up and let it all go to waste. It wasn't once or twice, but several times that I had to tame my demons and avoid losing the battle. Sometimes I wasn't that strong, and I had to deal with the wounds, but many times I could, and I know that those who are dealing with the same problem can do it too. As before, I leave you this entry in Spanish and English hoping that it will help those who need it and serve to educate about it those who don't.

Estuve allí, conozco perfectamente el sentimiento e hice lo mismo que estás a punto de hacer. Estás a punto de cortarte. Hubo momentos en los que me rendí y corté, pero hubo otros, más que los momentos en que perdí la pelea, en los que me negué y luché.

¿Estás a punto de cortarte?

Estás a punto de esconderte en quién sabe dónde para marcar tu piel para siempre, perder una batalla que aún puedes ganar, renunciar a todo lo que has hecho hasta ahora. Ambos sabemos que te sientes más débil que nunca, que el dolor interior es demasiado para lidiar con él. Pero lavar tu dolor con sangre hará cualquier cosa menos ayudarte.

Sí, te sentirás mejor, sí, volverás a respirar, pero luego tendrás que lidiar con el tema de tener un problema físico. Ya somos enemigos de nuestras propias mentes, ya luchamos contra nuestros cerebros todos los días, ¿necesitamos luchar contra nuestros cuerpos también? Ni hoy, ni mañana, ni nunca.

Detente un segundo, no te muevas, no parpadees, no pienses en nada más que en ti. ¿Mereces sentir más dolor del que ya tienes dentro? ¿Crees que tienes que ser castigado por algo por lo que no tienes la culpa? Yo no, y en el fondo, muy en el fondo, hay una vocecita que te grita y te dice lo mismo. Escúchala. Solo detente, detenlo todo, y escúchala.

¿Estás solo? Si es así, pon tu canción favorita, llora, escribe, grita, corre alrededor de la mesa, haz lo que puedas para quemar esa ráfaga de energía tóxica. Si no lo estás, escóndete, adelante, pero mírate al espejo, a tus propios ojos, deja que las lágrimas ardan tanto como quieran, déjalas bajar, pero no te atrevas a rendirte.

Somos los más valientes de todos

No hay nada peor que ser tu propio peor enemigo, nada más aterrador que tener miedo de ti mismo, y te mereces lo mejor solo por lidiar con eso todos los días, por luchar sin descanso. Somos Guerreros, somos los más valientes de todos porque, recuerda mis palabras, no todos pueden lidiar con esto, y tú y yo, los dos, lo hemos hecho durante demasiado tiempo.

Sabemos cómo luchar, sabemos cómo ganar, pero a veces el dolor está muy adentro. No dejes que haga lo que le da la gana, no dejes que te destruya más de lo que ya ha hecho. Puedes hacer esto, puedes domar a los demonios. Lo has hecho antes, simplemente están más enojados esta vez, pero sé que puedes hacerlo. Te juro que puedes. Que me destroce un rayo si miento.

Mind is breaking, nerves are wilder than never before, cannot stop crying, and something hurts a lot inside.  Been there, perfectly know the feeling, and did the same thing you’re about to do.  You’re about to cut.  There were times I gave up and cut, but there were others, more than the times I lost the fight, that I refused and fought back.

Are you about to cut?

You’re about to hide inside who-knows-where to forever mark your skin, to lose a battle you can still win, to give up on everything you’ve done so far.  We both know you feel weaker than ever, that the pain inside is just too much to deal with.  But to wash your hurt in blood will do anything but help you.

Yes, you will feel better, yes, you will breathe again, but then you will have to deal with the issue of having a physical problem.  We already are enemies with our own minds, we already fight our brains every single day, do we need to fight our bodies as well?  Not today, not tomorrow, and not ever.

Stop for a second, don’t move, don’t blink, don’t think about anything else but you.  Do you deserve to feel more pain that you already have inside?  Do you think you have to be punished for something for which you are not to blame?  I don’t, and deep, deep inside, there’s a little voice screaming to you telling the same.  Listen to it.  Just stop, stop it all, and listen to it.

Are you alone? If you are, put on your favourite song, cry, write, scream, run around the table, do whatever you can to burn off that rush of toxic energy.  If you are not, hide, go ahead, but look at yourself in the mirror, right into your own eyes, let the tears burn as much as they want, let them go down, but don’t you dare to give up.

We’re the bravest of them all

There’s nothing worse than being your own worst enemy, nothing more fearful than being scared of yourself, and you deserve the best just for dealing with it every single day, for fighting with no rest.  We’re Warriors, we’re the bravest of them all, because, and mark my words, not everyone can deal with this, and you and I, both of us, have done it for far too long.

We know how to fight, we know how to win, but sometimes the hurt is deep inside.  Don’t let it go the way it wants to, don’t let it destroy you more than it has already done.  You can do this, you can tame the demons.  You’ve done it before, they’re just angrier this time, but I know you can do it.  I swear that you can.  May I be shattered by a thunderbolt if I’m lying.

One step at a time.  Wash your face, look into the mirror, read what you just wrote, repeat the song over and over again.  And then, when there’s nothing left inside, breathe once again, and go back to whatever you were doing.

Swamp Thing es de esos personajes que siempre he querido conocer. La idea de un defensor de la tierra y la naturaleza, junto con comentarios sobre la monstruosidad de la humanidad y cómo esta destruye todo lo que toca, es fascinante por todos los ángulos. Aquí nos encontramos justamente con eso, con un planeta destruido cuya población hace lo imposible para sobrevivir, lo cual incluye desiciones no muy honestas y que los hacen menos humanos.

La idea de entidades superhumanas que deciden el futuro del planeta no es nueva, pero la presentación es muy atractiva pues se enfoca más en un padre soltero que intenta mantener la inocencia de su hija intacta. Aquí no hay historias de romances imposibles entre damiselas y monstruos, sino un hombre normal que lucha contra bestias con caras humanas.

Me hubiese gustado que este primer libro incluyera más información sobre cómo funciona la sociedad en la que se encuentran los personajes, qué llevó a que el planeta colapsara, puntualmente, aunque entiendo que por tema de espacio no se puede desarrollar tanto como uno quisiera. Sin embargo, algunos datos para entrar en contexto no habrían quedado mal.

Para mí, Swamp Thing: Green Hell Book One es una historia con potencial y que es atractiva tanto para adolescentes como adultos. El guión de Jeff Lemire te mantiene interesado en todo momento, el arte de Doug Mahnke y colores de David Baron juegan mucho con los contrastes gráficos, mientras que el leterring de Steve Wands fue múy cómodo de leer. Estoy ansioso por saber qué pasará más adelante, y qué será de estos personajes.

Jeff Lemire—the author of the smash hits Joker: Killer Smile and The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage, along with the graphic novel that inspired the television sensation Sweet Tooth—returns to Black Label with one of the greatest artists in modern DC history, Doug Mahnke, in tow! Together they’ll unleash a gory, gruesome monster mash, where the fate of humanity rests in the hands of someone who isn’t human at all!

Swamp Thing is one of those characters I've always wanted to meet. The idea of ​​a defender of the earth and nature, along with comments on the monstrosity of humanity and how it destroys everything it touches, is fascinating from every angle. Here we find just that, a destroyed planet whose population does the impossible to survive, which includes decisions that are not very honest and that make them less human.

The idea of ​​superhuman entities that decide the future of the planet is not new, but the presentation is very attractive as it focuses more on a single father who tries to keep the innocence of his daughter intact. There are no stories of impossible romances between damsels and monsters here, but a normal man fighting beasts with human faces.

I would have liked this first book to include more information on how the society in which the characters find themselves works, what led to the collapse of the planet, specifically, although I understand that due to space issues, it cannot be developed as much as one would like. However, some data to enter context wouldn't have been bad.

For me, Swamp Thing: Green Hell Book One is a story with potential and one that appeals to both teens and adults. Jeff Lemire's script keeps you interested at all times, Doug Mahnke's art and David Baron's colors play a lot with graphic contrasts, while Steve Wands' lettering was very comfortable to read. I'm anxious to know what will happen next, and what will become of these characters.

Grim: Fantasía con la Muerte / Fantasy with Death

Buen día, gente bonita. Espero que estén muy bien. Hoy quiero compartirles un primer vistazo a un cómic que se ve lindo lindo y que ya quiero leer. Es una historia de fantasía, como no podía faltar en este blog, pero que se enfoca en un elemento que me encanta: la muerte: Se trata de Grim, con un guión de Stephanie Phillips (Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman), arte de Flaviano (New Mutants), colores de Rico Renzi (Spider-Gwen), y lettering de Tom Napolitano (The Joker), publicado por BOOM! Good morning, beautiful people. I hope you all are okay. Today I want to share with you a first look at a comic that looks pretty cool and that I already want to read. It's a fantasy story, as this blog could not miss, but it focuses on an element that I love: death: It's called Grim, with a script by Stephanie Phillips (Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman), art by Flaviano (New Mutants ), colors by Rico Renzi (Spider-Gwen), and lettering by Tom Napolitano (The Joker), published by BOOM! Studios. Let's go with the details.

Her stories and comics have appeared from DC, AfterShock, Oni Press, Heavy Metal, Dark Horse, Top Cow/Image, and more. Outside of comics, Stephanie also holds a PhD in rhetoric and composition.

Si me preguntan, la premisa es muy interesante, bastante atractiva, el arte es precioso, y desde ya puedo decir que va a haber una dosis de humor negro; faltaría ver qué tanta, pero me inclino por creer que tendrá mucha. Lejos de predecir si será una serie larga o no, sí me atrevería a decir que podría lidiar con temas espirituales, junto con preguntas filosóficas. Que vaya todo envuelto con una estética de fantasía oscura lo haría mucho mejor, así que solo resta esperar para conocer más detalles. El primer número sale en mayo de este año, así que tampoco es una espera larga.

If you ask me, the premise is very interesting, quite attractive, the art is beautiful, and I can already say that there is going to be a dose of dark humor; it remains to be seen how much, but I'm inclined to believe that it will have a lot. Far from predicting if it will be a long series or not, I would dare to say that it could deal with spiritual issues, along with philosophical questions. Going all wrapped up in a dark fantasy aesthetic would make it much better, so we just have to wait for more details. The first issue comes out in May this year, so it's not a long wait either.

Buenas buenas, gente bonita. ¿Listos para el fin de semana? Siguiendo con las entradas sobre salud mental, hay una bastante especial en la que hablo sobre un tema superpersonal del que ya he escrito antes en el blog: autolesiones. Esta vez, específicamente, se trata sobre si alguien que se haya autolesionado debería mostrar sus cicatrices o no, y me pongo como ejemplo al respecto. Espero que sirva para que quienes se debaten al respecto sepan qué hacer y aquellos que no puedan entender mejor lo que es lidiar con esto.

Hello hello, beautiful people. Ready for the weekend? Continuing with the posts on mental health, there is a rather special one in which I talk about a super personal topic that I have already written about before on the blog: self-harm. This time, specifically, it is about whether someone who has self-harmed should show their scars or not, and I make an example of that. I hope it will help those who are debating about it know what to do and those who cannot better understand what it is to deal with this.

Las personas que se autolesionan a menudo tienen el problema de lidiar con esas miradas de los demás cuando sus cicatrices son visibles. Estamos en un mundo donde la salud mental es vista como una mentira, como una llamada de atención y cualquier otra cosa que no sea un problema grave que mata a las personas todos los días. Entonces, dejar que extraños sepan sobre tu pasado, tal vez tu presente, es incómodo.

Una prisión en la carne

Sin embargo, se supone que no debes ser un prisionero de tu ropa, usar mangas largas las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana y prohibirte las playas, las piscinas y situaciones similares. Mis rodillas tienen pequeñas cicatrices, y la gente las verá algún día. Pero cuando los cortes aún estaban abiertos, me encontré rogándole al universo que no necesitara mostrarlas. Incluso después de que sanaron, todavía me daba náuseas pensar en mostrar mis rodillas.

Me corté las manos cuando estaba en el último año del bachillerato debido al estrés con el que vivía. Una noche, destruí mi mano izquierda. Está libre de cicatrices gracias a la forma en que cuidé la herida. Pero al día siguiente... ¿qué demonios se suponía que debía hacer?

Mi mente rebelde me dijo algo que todavía practico: Déjalos saber, es tu problema, no el de ellos. Lo atravesaste y sobreviviste, viviste para contarlo, aunque fue la peor manera de lidiar con todo.

Pero ya está hecho, no podemos hacer nada más que afrontarlo, respirar hondo antes de salir a jugar como si no nos diéramos cuenta si alguien nos hace una mueca. Nuestros cuerpos son nuestros, y son solo nuestros, con o sin cicatrices.

Ojos al frente

Si a alguien no le gustan nuestras cicatrices, que no les haga caso. Es difícil, pero nada con lo que un par de auriculares no puedan ayudarte. Cuando caminé hacia la puerta de entrada esa mañana, a punto de encarar a mis compañeros de clase, me los puse y seleccioné una canción que me encantaba. Mantuve mis ojos al frente y me mentí cien veces diciendo que no me importaba. Por fin lo creí, y así la mentira perdió su naturaleza. Me miraban, yo mostraba mis heridas, aún sangraban, y no me importaba nada.

La gente puede juzgar, puede quejarse, puede decir lo que quiera, pero si quieres usar una camiseta de manga corta o un vestido; si no quiere usar muñequeras, o eliges simplemente olvidarte de las cicatrices, ¿por qué no deberías hacerlo? Tu pasado no define tu presente, y tener marcas en la piel no dice absolutamente nada sobre el tipo de persona que eres ahora. Dice aún menos sobre quién serás en el futuro.

No hay vergüenza en ser fuerte, tenlo en cuenta. Si alguien te dice lo contrario, trata de hacer una broma sobre el tema o te hace una mueca, tienes tres opciones: A. sentirse mal por ello; B. dales un dedo medio para que se sienten; o C. no prestar atención. Creo en el último, pero no me avergonzaré de usar el segundo si lo necesito. Nadie tiene derecho a decirme quién soy por lo que he pasado.

People who self-harm often have the problem of dealing with those looks from others when their scars are visible. We’re in a world where mental health is seen as a lie, as a call for attention, and anything other than a serious problem that kills people every single day. So to let strangers know about your past, maybe your present, is uncomfortable.

A prison in the flesh

However, you’re not supposed to be a prisoner of your clothes, have long sleeves 24/7 and forbid yourself beaches, pools and similar situations. My knees have little scars, and people will see them someday. But when the cuts were still open, I found myself begging the universe that I wouldn’t need to show them. Even after they healed, it still made me feel sick to think about showing my knees.

I cut my hands when I was in senior year because of the stress I lived with. One night, I destroyed my left hand. It’s scar-free thanks to the way I cared for the wound. But the next day… what the eff was I supposed to do?

My rebellious mind told me something that I still practice: Let them know, it is your problem, not theirs. You went through it and survived, lived to tell the tale, even though it was the worst way to deal with it all.

But it is done, there’s nothing we can do about it but to face it, to take our deepest breath before going out and playing as though we don’t notice if someone makes a face at us. Our bodies are our own, and are only ours, with or without scars.

Eyes to the front

If someone doesn’t like our scars, don’t pay attention. It’s hard, but nothing that a pair of headphones cannot help you with. When I walked to the entrance door that morning, about to face my classmates, I put them on and selected a song I loved. I kept my eyes right to the front, and lied a hundred times to myself saying that I didn’t care. At last I believed it, and so the lie lost its nature. They were watching me, I showed my wounds, still bleeding, and cared nothing at all.

People can judge, can complain, can say anything they like, but if you want to use a short-sleeve t-shirt or dress; if you don’t want to use wristbands, or choose just to forget about the scars, why shouldn’t you? Your past doesn’t define your present, and to have marks in your skin tells absolutely nothing about the kind of person you are now. It tells even less about the one you’ll be in the future.

There’s no shame in being strong, keep that in mind. If anyone tells you otherwise, tries to make a joke about the theme or makes a face at you, you have three options: a. feel bad about it; b. give them a middle finger to sit on; or c. pay no attention. I’m a believer of the last one, but will have no shame in using the second if I need to. Nobody has the right to tell me who I am because of what I’ve been through.

Reseña / Review: Malice

Buen día, Nocturnos. Espero que su semana vaya bien. ^^ Yo vengo con muy buen humor y ganas de hacerlos leer. Desde hace tiempo que no me enganchenganchaba tanto con un libro como me pasó con esta novela. Se trata de un retelling que dio mucho de que hablar cuando salió y que me causó iguales niveles de curiosidad: Malice, por Heather Walter.

Érase una vez un hada malvada que, en un acto de venganza, maldijo a morir a una línea de princesas. Una maldición que solo podría romperse con un beso de amor verdadero.

Has escuchado esto antes, ¿no es así? El apuesto príncipe. El felices para siempre.

Absoluto sin sentido.

Déjame decirte, a nadie en Briar realmente le importa lo que les pase a sus princesas. No de la forma en que se preocupan por sus joyas y fiestas elaboradas y elixires que otorgan encanto. Pensé que no me importaba, tampoco.

Hasta que la conocí.

La Princesa Aurora. La última heredera al trono de Briar. Amable. Cortés. La futura reina que su reino necesita. Una a quien no le molesta que yo sea Alyce, la Gracia Oscura, aborrecida y temida por la misteriosa magia oscura que corre por mis venas. Humillada y avergonzada por los mismos nobles que me pagan para embotellar maleficios y luego me marcan como un monstruo. Aurora dice que debería estar orgullosa de mis dones. Que ella... se preocupa por mí. A pesar de que un poder como el mío fue responsable de su maldición.

Pero con menos de un año hasta que esa maldición la mate, cualquier futuro que pueda ver con Aurora se está desintegrando rápidamente, y ella no puede soportar besar a otro insípido príncipe. Quiero ayudarla. Si mi poder inició su maldición, tal vez sea lo que pueda deshacerla. Quizás juntas podamos forjar un nuevo mundo.

Tonterías de nuevo. Porque todos sabemos cómo termina esta historia, ¿no? Aurora es la bella princesa. Y yo-

Yo soy la villana.

Tengo que empezar esta reseña siendo honesto: casi toda la primera mitad del libro me hizo preguntarme cómo es que había tanto alboroto. Los personajes no terminaban de convencerme, sus reacciones, salvo en el caso de Alyce, y hubo cierto insta-amor al inicio que me hizo casi abandonar la lectura. Sin embargo, todo se explica mucho más adelante, cobra un sentido diferente, y terminé entendiendo qué estaba pasando debajo de lo que parecía ser un inicio débil.

Cerca de la mitad del libro, la cosa cambia. Las subtramas se vuelven más complejas, los personajes te revelan sorpresas, Alyce empieza a cambiar en algo más, Aurora cobra más importancia, y así sucesivamente. Todo lo que se estaba preparando baja la fachada de una historia sencilla con algo de romance se torna bastante oscuro, por no mencionar que esas últimas 100 páginas me destruyeron. ¡Literalmente estaba con el corazón a mil latidos por segundo!

Los elementos fantásticos están muy, muy bien pensados, la trama bien desarrollada, los personajes resultan ser más humanos que cualquier otra cosa. Sencillamente es una sorpresa detrás de otra que te deja sin aliento. ¿Única queja? Un arma de doble filo el haber usado nombres de la película de Disney. El juego de palabras de Alyce y Malice me encantó, ¿pero también nombrar a la princesa Aurora? ¿Una mascota voladora muy similar a Diablo? Las similitudes eran demasiado obvias, aunque la historia es totalmente diferente. Sé que son guiños a la película, pero hubiera preferido algo menos obvio.

Si les gustan las historias de fantasía bien construídas, un mundo bien pensado, intriga política, personajes engañozos, y subtramas que añadan encanto a la historia principal, junto con algo de romance, Malice les va a encantar. Ahora... Por algún motivo que no entiendo, este libro no está en español. ¿Qué demonios? Alguien arme un alboroto, porque Heather Walter merece más lectores, por no mencionar que la conclusión de la bilogía, Misrule, saldrá publicado el 10 de mayo.

Hey there, Nightlies. I hope your week is going well. ^^ I come with a very good mood and desire to make you read. It's been a long time since I've been as hooked on a book as I was on this novel. It's a retelling that gave a lot to talk about when it came out and that caused me the same levels of curiosity: Malice, by Heather Walter.

Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss.

You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily ever after.

Utter nonsense.

Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either.

Until I met her.

Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she . . . cares for me. Even though a power like mine was responsible for her curse.

But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating—and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps together we could forge a new world.

Nonsense again. Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I—

I am the villain.

I have to start this review by being honest: pretty much the entire first half of the book had me wondering why there was such a fuss. The characters didn't quite convince me, their reactions, except in the case of Alyce, and there was a certain insta-love at the beginning that made me almost give up reading. However, everything is explained much later, takes on a different meaning, and I ended up understanding what was going on underneath what seemed like a weak start.

About halfway through the book, things change. The subplots become more complex, the characters reveal surprises to you, Alyce begins to change into something else, Aurora becomes more important, and so on. Everything that was brewing under the guise of a simple story with some romance turns pretty dark, not to mention those last 100 pages destroyed me. My heart was literally at a thousand beats per second!

The fantasy elements are very, very well thought out, the plot well developed, the characters turn out to be more human than anything else. It's just one surprise after another that takes your breath away. Only complaint? A double-edged sword having used names from the Disney movie. I loved the Alyce and Malice pun, but naming the princess Aurora too? A flying pet very similar to Diablo? The similarities were too obvious, even though the story is totally different. I know they are nods to the movie, but I would have preferred something less obvious.

If you like well-constructed fantasy stories, a well-thought-out world, political intrigue, deceitful characters, and subplots that add charm to the main story, along with some romance, you'll love Malice. Now... For some reason I don't understand, this book is not in Spanish. What the hell? Someone raise a ruckus, because Heather Walter deserves more readers, not to mention that the duology's conclusion, Misrule, is due out on May 10th.

Entrevista: Tilo Wolff de Lacrimosa sobre Testimonium / Interview: Lacrimosa's Tilo Wolff on Testimonium

Buenos días, Nocturnos. Espero que pasaran un muy buen fin de semana. Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una de las entrevistas de las que más me siento orgulloso, otro sueño que se volvió realidad: entrevistar al mismísimo Tilo Wolff, el fundador de Lacrimosa, una banda gótica que no necesita presentación. Descubrí su música cuando estaba en el bachillerato y fue amor a primera vista. La combinación de metal, música clásica, el cúmulo de emociones, las letras, y las voces de Tilo y Anne Nurmi me hechizaron en el acto. Por mucho tiempo creí que eran nombres fuera de mi alcance, pero hoy puedo decir que tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar a una leyenda gótica (con errores que aún recuerdo, pero de eso se aprende). Quienes hayan estado aquí desde hace tiempo incluso recordarán mi reseña de Testimonium, un álbum que aún me encanta. ¡Espero que disfruten de la entrevista tanto como yo de hacerla!

Today I want to share with you one of the interviews that I'm most proud of, another dream that came true: interviewing Tilo Wolff himself, the founder of Lacrimosa, a gothic band that needs no introduction. I discovered their music when I was in high school and it was love at first sight. The combination of metal, classical music, the accumulation of emotions, the lyrics, and the voices of Tilo and Anne Nurmi spellbound me on the spot. For a long time I thought they were names out of my reach, but today I can say that I had the opportunity to interview a gothic legend (with mistakes that I still remember, but from that you learn). Those of you who have been here a long time will even remember my review of Testimonium, an album I still love. I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did doing it!

1. 2016 fue un año cruel, muchas estrellas ya no están con nosotros, y muchas de ellas fueron una influencia para ti. ¿Cómo te sientes cuando piensas en esto?

TW: Por supuesto que me siento muy triste y esa es la razón de este nuevo álbum. A través de sus vidas y su trabajo dieron mucho al mundo e influyeron en nuestra forma de escuchar música, de escuchar, sentir y expresarnos. Lo que hicieron, especialmente músicos como David Bowie, Leonard Cohen y Prince, hicieron una gran diferencia en este mundo y esto finalmente me inspiró a escribir sobre mis sentimientos después de que se fueron.

2. ¿Qué te hizo decidir hacer un álbum en su memoria?

TW: En realidad no planeé componer tal un álbum. Me golpeó y de repente me encontré con mi guitarra y la línea "Wenn unsere Helden sterben" en mi cabeza escribiendo esta canción y así una vino luego de la otra ¡y antes de darme cuenta de lo que estaba pasando estaba en medio de la composición de este réquiem!

3. ¿Hubo alguno de ellos que consideres el que más te impactó como músico? Una vez dijiste que David Bowie es tu héroe, ¿quizás fue él?

TW: Bueno, a través de Prince llegué a conocer la intensidad de amar cierto tipo de música. Sus primeros álbumes fueron las cosas más preciadas en mi primera juventud y me di cuenta de que algo que no se ve ni se toca puede tener un impacto mayor que algo físico. Más tarde, David Bowie fue realmente mi héroe, musicalmente sabio y ¡cuan influyente fue en la escena gótica con álbumes como “Scary monsters” por ejemplo! Mis primeros discos reflejan de alguna manera un poco de este amor que siento por su música. Pero la mayor influencia en mi forma de escribir y hacer música ciertamente la tiene Leonard Cohen. Fue, en mi opinión, uno de los más grandes poetas que jamás haya existido y uno de los seres más sensibles de este circo musical. Creo que el mundo todavía no se dio cuenta de lo excepcional que era en realidad. ¡Algún día se hablará de él en una frase con Mozart, Beethoven y Bach!

4. ¿Cómo describirías la experiencia de honrar a aquellos que te inspiraron cuando estabas creando este álbum? ¿Hubo alguna pista que resultó ser la más desafiante?

TW: Dado que no escribí estas canciones de “Testimonium” con el propósito de honrar personalmente a estos músicos, no seguí ninguna regla o esquema. Transformé mi visión personal sobre ellos y sobre mi dolor por su muerte en una música muy personal. Este fue en realidad el mayor desafío, ¡acercarme tanto al dolor que a veces era difícil de soportar para seguir escribiendo!

5. ¿Qué esperas que sientan o piensen los fans de Lacrimosa sobre Testimonium?

TW: Nunca tengo expectativas porque Lacrimosa es tan única que todos necesitan encontrar una forma personal de entrar en un álbum. Cuando uno está haciendo canciones pop, puede esperar que la gente se sienta bien cuando las escucha, o uno está haciendo música de club y espera que la gente la baile. Simplemente abro mi corazón y dejo que todo fluya. Si a uno le gusta lo que escucha, estoy más que feliz, pero no puedo esperar esto.

6. Muchas gracias por su tiempo. Como última pregunta, y ahora que el álbum está a punto de ser lanzado, ¿cuáles son tus pensamientos finales al respecto?

TW: Bueno, lo siento, tomó demasiado tiempo hasta que finalmente respondí sus preguntas. ¡Lo siento por eso! Y hablando de los pensamientos finales, puedo decir que lo he estado escuchando ahora que ya se lanzó muchas veces y ya no quiero escuchar nada más en este momento. Sabes, siempre es genial cuando todo el trabajo está hecho y todo está terminado y finalmente puedo recostarme escuchándolo desde el lado de un fanático y ya no desde el lado del productor. ¡Así que este álbum triste me hace muy feliz!

1. 2016 was a cruel year, many stars are not with us anymore, and many of them were an influence for you. How do you feel when you think about this?

TW: Of course I feel very sad which is the reason for this new album. Through their lives and their work they gave so much to the world and influenced our way of listening to music, of hearing, feeling and expressing ourselves. What they did, specially musicians like David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Prince made such a difference to this world and this finally inspired me to write about my feelings after they are gone.    

2. What make you decide to do an album in their memory?

TW: Actually I didn’t plan to compose such an album. It kind of hit me and I suddenly found myself with my guitar and the line “Wenn unsere Helden sterben” in my head writing this song and so one came to the other and before I realized what was going on I was in the middle of composing this requiem! 

3. Was there any of them that you consider the one that made the biggest impact in you as a musician? You once said that David Bowie is your hero, maybe it was him?

TW: Well, through Prince I got to know the intensity of loving a certain kind of music. His early albums were the most precious things in my early youth and so I realized that something that is not to be seen and not to be touched can have a bigger impact than something physical. Later, David Bowie was really my hero, musically wise and how much influenced he had on the Gothic scene with albums like “Scary monsters” for example! My early albums somehow reflect a little of this love I feel for his music. But the biggest influence on my way of writing and making music certainly has Leonard Cohen. He was – in my opinion – one of the greatest poets that ever lived and one of the most sensitive beings in this music circus. I think the world still didn’t realize how exceptional he really was. One day people will speak of him in one sentence with Mozart, Beethoven and Bach!     

4. How would you describe the experience of honoring those who inspired you when you were creating this album? Was there any track that proved to be the most challenging?

TW: Since I didn’t write these songs from “Testimonium” for the purpose of honouring these musicians personally I didn’t follow any rules or schemes. I transformed my personal view upon them and upon my pain about their death into very personal music. This actually was the biggest challenge, to get so close to the pain that is sometimes was hard to bare to continue writing!  

5. What do you expect Lacrimosa’s fans to feel or think about Testimonium?

TW: I never have expectations because Lacrimosa is so unique that everyone needs to find a personal way to enter into an album. When one is making pop songs you can expect the people to feel good when they listen to it, or one is doing club music that he expects the people to dance to it. I just open my heart and let all flow. If one likes what he hears, I am more than happy, but I can’t expect this. 

6. Thank you so much for your time. As a last question, and now that the album is about to be released, what are your final thoughts about it?

TW: Well, sorry, it took nearly too long till I finally answered your questions. Sorry about that! And talking about the final thoughts I can tell that I have been listening to it now that it is released many times already and I kind of don’t want to listen to anything else at the moment anymore. You know, it is always great when all the work is done and all is finished and I finally can lay back listening to it from the side of a fan and not anymore from the side of the producer. So this sad album makes me very happy!

Hace años estuve colaborando con una revista escribiendo sobre música, películas, series, y todo lo que me llamaba la atención, y probé la mano con algunas noticas, y hoy les comparto la reseña que hice de Under Your Spell.

After telling you about one of my favorite bands of all time, I wanted to retrieve the review I did of the album that triggered that interview (no, I'm still not over it ^w^). Years ago I was collaborating with a magazine writing about music, movies, series, and everything that caught my attention, and I tried my hand with some news, and today I share the review I made of Under Your Spell.

La banda canadiense de darkwave The Birthday Massacre ha demostrado su valía una vez más con un disco increíble. El 9 de junio fue el día en que vio la luz 'Under Your Spell', el último álbum del grupo con base en Toronto, mostrando un lado más poético de estos chicos y que todavía hay muchas canciones por escribir.

El disco arranca con 'One', un tema infantil pero siniestro, que recupera la magia de su anterior obra maestra 'Happy Birthday' pero mezclándola con la experiencia y la sólida estructura que identifica a la banda hoy en día y la apacible voz de la vocalista Chibi. Funciona perfectamente como apertura del álbum.

Con un mismo estilo, una combinación de rock suave y encanto oscuro, la banda explora diferentes caras de un sentimiento tan complejo como el amor, creando canciones adictivas como 'All of Nothing' y 'Without You', antes del desenfreno de 'Counterpane'; TBM debería considerar hacer un video musical para esta, solo digo.

La banda también gravita hacia una propuesta más electrónica con 'Unkind', 'The Lowest Low' y 'Games', usando metáforas para describir los altibajos de una relación enfermiza donde los sentimientos son unilaterales, recibiendo solo el silencio como una respuesta. Incluso se podría decir que hay un toque romántico en la soledad descrita, tanto en la letra como en la música.

Este disco no estaría completo sin la canción más oscura y espeluznante que la banda podría haber escrito, 'No tomorrow', que dibuja un camino directo a una película de terror de pesadilla. También podría considerarse como una secuela espiritual de 'Destroya', de su anterior álbum, 'Superstition'.

Finalmente, al mejor estilo de las canciones para la secuencia de créditos de una película, 'Endless' presenta un lado más pop de la banda, recurriendo a la estética de 'Walking With Strangers', pero siempre manteniendo su nueva voz y sonido por encima para dar un sonido retro de los años 80 que hace que el oyente viaje atrás en el tiempo.

Aunque algunos podrían haber esperado un disco pesado, 'Under Your Spell' une lo mejor del pasado con la cara más fresca de The Birthday Massacre, creando una experiencia real que se siente como si estuvieras nadando en un océano negro. Memorable. Uno de los mejores productos que ha lanzado esta banda hasta ahora.

Buenos días, gente linda. Espero que estén bien y con ganas de buena música. Hoy quiero recuperar una de las entrevistas por las que más me he emocionado al realizar en toda mi vida. Érase una vez, un chico joven que escuchaba una banda sin parar, The Birthday Massacre, a quienes un día logró entrevistar. ¡Mi FanBoy interno estaba en éxtasis! Con motivo del lanzamiento de Under Your Spell (2017), tuve la oportunidad de hablar con Michael Falcore, guitarrista de la banda, sobre su séptimo álbum de estudio. Good morning, beautiful people. I hope you are well and looking forward to good music. Today I want to recover one of the interviews that I have been most excited about doing in my entire life. Once upon a time, there was a young boy who listened non-stop to a band, The Birthday Massacre, whom he one day managed to interview. My inner FanBoy was ecstatic! On the occasion of the release of Under Your Spell (2017), I had the opportunity to speak with Michael Falcore, the band's guitarist, about their seventh studio album. Also, for those who don't know, TBM is going to release their ninth album, Fascination, this February 18th. I hope you enjoy!

1. ¿Qué significa este álbum para ustedes como banda?

M. Falcore: Es un disco muy personal, por lo que tiene un significado diferente para cada uno. Todos hemos sentido la pérdida de seres queridos y yo personalmente he visto una triste belleza en la forma en que funciona la vida. Todos participamos en esta fricción constante de positivo a negativo y viceversa. Con cada amor perdido hay un nuevo amor encontrado. Es fácil caer en la desesperación y ver la vida como un ciclo de sufrimiento sin sentido. Pero, si puede apreciar incluso las peores experiencias y aceptarlas de todo corazón junto con las buenas, entonces puede romper el hechizo y tomar el control de su vida.

2. ¿De dónde viene el nombre? ¿Quién lo propuso?

M. Falcore: Rainbow lo propuso. Es el nombre de una de las canciones que escribimos juntos y sentimos que encapsulaba el sentimiento general del álbum. Si alguna vez has estado en una relación turbulenta con alguien pero estás completamente enamorado de esa persona, entonces quizás sepas lo que significa el nombre. Tiene una connotación romántica en la superficie, pero hay un trasfondo oscuro que implica una sensación de estar atrapado o atrapado por la voluntad de otra persona. No hubo mucha discusión sobre el nombre del álbum Under Your Spell porque tenía mucho sentido. Por lo general, tendremos un par de nombres de álbumes dando vueltas, pero esta vez Under Your Spell fue el único nombre que consideramos.

3. Parece que hay mucho sonido electrónico, metal y mucha melancolía en las letras, pero qué melancolía en las letras, pero ¿cómo definirías las letras y la música de este disco?

M. Falcore: No me gusta definir nuestra música de esa manera. No está destinado a ser definido, está destinado a ser sentido. Pero entiendo la tentación que tiene la gente de encerrar el significado de una canción. Hace que sea más fácil de digerir, pero no le hace ningún favor a la música. Lo que creo que es hermoso puede ser triste para otra persona, o ambas cosas al mismo tiempo. Depende del oyente sentir lo que significa para ellos.

4. ¿Hubo algún paso difícil y desafiante en el proceso de creación? Escribir, producir... ¿cuál fue la parte más difícil?

M. Falcore: Cada paso del camino es difícil. Tenemos que amar cada canción del disco, de lo contrario no la usamos. Esa es parte de la razón por la que tardamos tanto en escribir. No hay canciones de relleno. Pero disfrutamos los desafíos. Y cuanto mayor sea el desafío, mayor será la recompensa. Al final siempre estamos eufóricos cuando terminamos un álbum. Y los comentarios de nuestros fanáticos sobre este álbum han sido increíbles y esperamos tocar estas nuevas canciones en vivo.

5. Debido a la letra, la gente podría pensar que este es un álbum conceptual en el que te enfocas en diferentes tipos de soledad, como asesinos en serie y crímenes sin resolver para “Hide and Seek”. ¿Estarías de acuerdo con esa idea?

M. Falcore: Un álbum conceptual requiere planificación y previsión, pero esta vez no hicimos eso. Simplemente pasamos por experiencias similares con un amor perdido y las canciones se unieron en un tema común casi por coincidencia. Nunca planeamos este disco, simplemente surgió de esta manera. Y eso lo hace sentir muy crudo y honesto para nosotros. La soledad puede ser un sentimiento que obtienes al escuchar este disco, pero hay mucho más que eso. Creo que el tema principal es el amor.

6. Si pudieras explicar este álbum en una palabra, ¿cuál sería? ¿Por qué?

M. Falcore: Creo que una palabra no es suficiente, jaja. Pero seguiré el juego. Diría que amor es la única palabra para este álbum. Está presente o ausente. Y nuestro estado de ser depende de ello. Muchas de las canciones del álbum giran en torno a este tema.

7. ¿Dirías que hubo una gran influencia mientras trabajabas en Under Your Spell o fue más como una mezcla de diferentes?

No puedo pensar en una influencia específica para este disco. No fui conscientemente influenciado por nada más durante el proceso de escritura, solo traté de concentrarme en lo que estaba haciendo en ese momento.

8. ¿Por qué decidiste seguir con otra campaña de PledgeMusic?

M. Falcore: Estábamos preocupados por hacer la primera campaña de Pledge Music, pero nos sorprendió mucho la reacción positiva que obtuvimos de nuestros fans. Y fueron los fans quienes nos animaron a hacer otra campaña, así que se lo debemos a ellos. Nos da la oportunidad de ofrecer a los fans una experiencia única como escuchar el álbum en un estudio con la banda 3 meses antes de su lanzamiento. Y también es una experiencia única para nosotros, porque podemos ver su reacción al álbum de primera mano, lo cual es algo completamente nuevo para nosotros.

9. ¿Cuál de los temas dirías que es el favorito de la banda? ¿Algún favorito personal allí, por cierto?

M. Falcore: Nuestros favoritos siguen cambiando. He estado demasiado cerca del álbum durante demasiado tiempo, así que necesito un tiempo lejos de él. Pero mis favoritos recientes fueron All of Nothing y No tomorrow. Tiendo a gustarme las cosas más oscuras, jaja. Pero necesito un tiempo lejos del disco, así que cuando vuelvo tengo oídos frescos. Pero siempre me interesa saber cuáles son los favoritos de otras personas.

10. ¿Sientes que Under Your Spell tuvo un impacto significativo en ti como banda?

M. Falcore: Cada álbum nos cambia un poco. Y este es nuestro séptimo disco, así que últimamente hemos estado mirando mucho nuestro pasado. El tiempo parece pasar muy rápido cuando te das la vuelta y miras hacia atrás. Hay muchos buenos recuerdos y algunos malos recuerdos de nuestro pasado. Y si puedes apreciar los malos momentos tanto como los buenos, empiezas a ver una belleza especial en la vida. Pero también es importante no insistir demasiado en el pasado y recordar vivir la vida en el momento. Y todavía estamos viviendo este álbum a través de las giras. Tengo muchas ganas de hablar con los fans y ver cómo el álbum cambia a otras personas.

11. ¿Alguna vez has estado bajo un hechizo, literal y/o metafóricamente?

M. Falcore: No literalmente, pero tal vez metafóricamente, jaja.

12. Después de este disco, la gira y todo lo que viene con él, ¿qué otros planes tenéis? ¿Alguna idea con la que trabajará a continuación?

M. Falcore: Tengo algunos proyectos paralelos en los que estoy trabajando ahora, por lo que pueden lanzarse el próximo año. Hice mucha música durante este álbum que realmente no encajaba en el paradigma de Birthday Massacre. Pero es demasiado pronto para decir exactamente qué sucederá con ese material.

13. ¡Muchas gracias por tomarse el tiempo con esta entrevista! Para terminar bien, ¿podrías dar un consejo para aquellos que quieran seguir tus pasos e iniciarse en el mundo de la música?

M. Falcore: Cuando quieras, gracias.

Haz la música que quieres escuchar, no la que crees que otras personas quieren escuchar.

1. What does this album mean for you as a band?

M. Falcore: It's a very personal record, so it has a different meaning for everyone. We've all felt the loss of loved ones and I personally have seen a sad beauty in the way life operates. We all take part in this constant friction from positive to negative and back again. With every love lost there is a new love found. It's easy to fall into despair and to view life as a pointless cycle of suffering. But, if you can appreciate even the worst experiences and accept them whole heartedly along with the good, then you can break the spell and take control of your life.

2. Where did the name come from? Who proposed it?

M. Falcore: Rainbow proposed it. It's the name of one of the songs we wrote together and we felt that it encapsulated the overall feeling of the album. If you've ever been in a turbulent relationship with someone but you're so completely enamoured with that person then you might know what the name means. It has a romantic connotation on the surface of it, but there's a dark undertone that implies a feeling of being ensnared or trapped by someone else's will. There wasn't much discussion about naming the album Under Your Spell because it just made so much sense. Usually we'll have a couple album names floating around but this time Under Your Spell was the only name we considered.

3. There seems to be a lot of electronic, metal sound and a lot of melancholy on the lyrics, but how melancholy in the lyrics, but how would you define the lyrics and music on this disc?

M. Falcore: I don't like to define our music that way. It's not meant to be defined, it's meant to be felt. But I understand the temptation people have to lock down the meaning of a song. It makes it easier to digest, but it does a disservice to the music. What I think is beautiful might be sad to someone else, or both at the same time. It's up to the listener to feel what it means to them.

4. Was there any difficult, challenging step in the creation process? Writing, producing.. which was the hardest part?

M. Falcore: Every step of the way is difficult. We have to love every song on the record otherwise we don't use it. That's part of the reason we take so long to write. There are no filler songs. But we enjoy the challenges. And the greater the challenge the greater the reward. In the end we are always elated when we finish an album. And the feedback from our fans on this album has been amazing and we look forward to playing these new songs live.

5. Because of the lyrics, people could think this is a concept album where you're focused on different types of loneliness, like on serial killers and unresolved crimes for “Hide and Seek.” Would you agree with that idea?

M. Falcore: A concept album takes planning and forethought, but we didn't do that this time. We just happened to be going through similar experiences with lost love and the songs came together in a common theme almost by coincidence. We never planned this record, it just came together this way. And that makes it feel very raw and honest for us. Loneliness might be a feeling you get from listening to this record but there's much more than that. I believe the main theme is love.

6. If you could explain this album in one word, which one would it be? Why?

M. Falcore: I think one word is not enough, haha. But I will play along. I would say Love is the one word for this album. It is either present, or absent. And our state of being depends on it. A lot of the songs on the album revolve around this theme.

7. Would you say that there was a major influence while you worked on Under Your Spell or was it more like a mix of different ones?

I can't think of one specific influence for this record. I wasn't consciously influenced by anything else during the writing process, I just tried to focus on what I was doing in the moment.

8. Why did you decide to go with another PledgeMusic campaign?

M. Falcore: We were apprehensive about doing the first Pledge Music campaign, but we were very surprised by the positive reaction we got from our fans. And it was the fans who encouraged us to do another campaign, so we owe it to them. It gives us an opportunity to offer the fans a unique experience like listening to the album in a studio with the band 3 months before it's released. And it's a unique experience for us too, because we get to see their reaction to the album first hand, which is a completely new thing for us.

9. Which one of the tracks would you say is the band’s favorite? Any personal favorite on there, by the way?

M. Falcore: Our favorites keep changing. I've been too close to the album for too long so I need time away from it. But my recent favorites were All of Nothing and No tomorrow. I tend to like the darker stuff, haha. But, I need time away from the record, so when I come back to it I have fresh ears. But, I'm always interested to hear what other people's favorites are.

10. Do you feel that Under Your Spell made a significant impact in you as a band?

M. Falcore: Every album changes us a little bit. And this is our seventh record, so we've been looking back at our past a lot lately. Time seems to move very fast when you turn around and look behind you. There's a lot of good memories, and some bad memories in our past. And if you can appreciate the bad times as much as the good times you start to see a special beauty in life. But it's also important not to dwell on the past too much and remember to live life in the moment. And we're still living this album through touring. I'm really looking forward to talking to the fans and seeing how the album changes other people.

11. Have you ever been under a spell, literally and/or metaphorically?

M. Falcore: Not literally, but perhaps metaphorically, haha.

12. After this album, the tour and everything that comes with it, what other plans do you have? Any ideas you will be working with next?

M. Falcore: I have some side projects I'm working on now, so that may be released next year. I made a lot of music during this album that didn't really fit into the Birthday Massacre paradigm. But it's too soon to say exactly what will happen with that material.
