El único tema disonante, no solo dentro de TESTIMONIUM, sino también con la puesta en escena general de Lacrimosa, sería "Weltenbrand", que presenta guitarras salvajes envueltas en las furias más primitivas y una fuerte influencia en el doom y death metal. Parece estar fuera de lugar, aunque aplaudo el hecho de que la banda expanda su horizonte.
Como toque final, tenemos la canción que titula el álbum, un épico réquiem de diez minutos que hace que cada segundo tenga su propia importancia. Las voces oscuras, combinadas con instrumentos siniestros, crean una atmósfera pesimista, una nota pesada para terminar un trabajo tan intenso y hace que el silencio del final se vuelva incluso incómodo.

Black royalty are about to come back to the musical scene with a record that bleds together the best of their pasts eras. Lacrimosa, the German duo of Tilo Wolff and Anne Nurmi, presents a solid proposal filled with pure feelings. TESTIMONIUM is on pre-order in ther website, but we had a chance to hear it before it hits the stores.
Starting with “Wenn unsere Helden sterben,” it combines their familiar classical influence with a powerful gothic metal style. Tilo’s voice becomes a new instrument that plays the ups and downs along with the music, showing a total control in his vocals turning calm sobs into a tormented lament in less than expected.
In the same emotional line, exploting the raw feeling of loss, “Nach dem Sturm” present a sad melody that highlights the melancholic keyboards from Anne Nurmi. It would seem that the band had been inspired by a dying heart that was preparing to stop after the worst wound was inflicted. Such is the intensity in this track.
Recovering the sound from FASSADE and LICHTGESTALT for “Zwischen allen Stühlen,” but also adding their most recent heavy influences, Lacrimosa shows a different side, more active and uplifting, with letters that are glued to the listener's mind, playing over and over again. You could even say that Tilo sounds a little happier than usual.
From now on, TESTIMONIUM explores the same feelings of loss, impotence and repressed desires from different angles, each more enthralling than the previous one, and expanding the creative and artistic capacities of Lacrimosa, but always remaining faithful to two fundamental characteristics: their musical elasticity and the concept of mourning for the entire album.
“My Pain” and “Black Wedding Day” add a romantic tint to the record, maintaining the same style and vibe with the nature of the disc, while tracks like “Herz und Verstand” or “der leise Tod” gravitate more towards the first act, but with a simpler sound, very own of Lacrimosa and easy to digest at the same time.
If I were to choose a song that makes me dream each time I listen to it, it would be “Lass die Nacht nicht über mich fallen” and its beautiful way to explain doom, almost as if Tilo enjoyed it despite the pain it causes. It’s an almost entirely instrumental track with a few vocals that, as before, are used as another instrument, creating an enviable balance.
The only dissonant theme, not only within TESTIMONIUM, but also with Lacrimosa's overall staging, would be "Weltenbrand," which features wild guitars wrapped in the most primitive of the furies and a strong influence on doom and death metal. It seems to be out of place, although I do applaud the fact that the band expand its horizon.
As a finishing touch, we have the song that titles the album, an epic ten-minute requiem that makes every second have its own importance. The dark vocals, combined with sinister instruments, create a pessimistic atmosphere, a heavy note to finish such an intense work, and causing the silence of the end to become uncomfortable even.
