Érase una vez, un chico joven que escuchaba una banda sin parar, The Birthday Massacre, a quienes un día logró entrevistar. ¡Mi FanBoy interno estaba en éxtasis! Con motivo del lanzamiento de Under Your Spell (2017), tuve la oportunidad de hablar con Michael Falcore, guitarrista de la banda, sobre su séptimo álbum de estudio. Good morning, beautiful people. I hope you are well and looking forward to good music. Today I want to recover one of the interviews that I have been most excited about doing in my entire life. Once upon a time, there was a young boy who listened non-stop to a band, The Birthday Massacre, whom he one day managed to interview. My inner FanBoy was ecstatic! On the occasion of the release of Under Your Spell (2017), I had the opportunity to speak with Michael Falcore, the band's guitarist, about their seventh studio album. Also, for those who don't know, TBM is going to release their ninth album, Fascination, this February 18th. I hope you enjoy!

1. ¿Qué significa este álbum para ustedes como banda?
M. Falcore: Es un disco muy personal, por lo que tiene un significado diferente para cada uno. Todos hemos sentido la pérdida de seres queridos y yo personalmente he visto una triste belleza en la forma en que funciona la vida. Todos participamos en esta fricción constante de positivo a negativo y viceversa. Con cada amor perdido hay un nuevo amor encontrado. Es fácil caer en la desesperación y ver la vida como un ciclo de sufrimiento sin sentido. Pero, si puede apreciar incluso las peores experiencias y aceptarlas de todo corazón junto con las buenas, entonces puede romper el hechizo y tomar el control de su vida.
2. ¿De dónde viene el nombre? ¿Quién lo propuso?
M. Falcore: Rainbow lo propuso. Es el nombre de una de las canciones que escribimos juntos y sentimos que encapsulaba el sentimiento general del álbum. Si alguna vez has estado en una relación turbulenta con alguien pero estás completamente enamorado de esa persona, entonces quizás sepas lo que significa el nombre. Tiene una connotación romántica en la superficie, pero hay un trasfondo oscuro que implica una sensación de estar atrapado o atrapado por la voluntad de otra persona. No hubo mucha discusión sobre el nombre del álbum Under Your Spell porque tenía mucho sentido. Por lo general, tendremos un par de nombres de álbumes dando vueltas, pero esta vez Under Your Spell fue el único nombre que consideramos.
3. Parece que hay mucho sonido electrónico, metal y mucha melancolía en las letras, pero qué melancolía en las letras, pero ¿cómo definirías las letras y la música de este disco?
M. Falcore: No me gusta definir nuestra música de esa manera. No está destinado a ser definido, está destinado a ser sentido. Pero entiendo la tentación que tiene la gente de encerrar el significado de una canción. Hace que sea más fácil de digerir, pero no le hace ningún favor a la música. Lo que creo que es hermoso puede ser triste para otra persona, o ambas cosas al mismo tiempo. Depende del oyente sentir lo que significa para ellos.
4. ¿Hubo algún paso difícil y desafiante en el proceso de creación? Escribir, producir... ¿cuál fue la parte más difícil?
M. Falcore: Cada paso del camino es difícil. Tenemos que amar cada canción del disco, de lo contrario no la usamos. Esa es parte de la razón por la que tardamos tanto en escribir. No hay canciones de relleno. Pero disfrutamos los desafíos. Y cuanto mayor sea el desafío, mayor será la recompensa. Al final siempre estamos eufóricos cuando terminamos un álbum. Y los comentarios de nuestros fanáticos sobre este álbum han sido increíbles y esperamos tocar estas nuevas canciones en vivo.
5. Debido a la letra, la gente podría pensar que este es un álbum conceptual en el que te enfocas en diferentes tipos de soledad, como asesinos en serie y crímenes sin resolver para “Hide and Seek”. ¿Estarías de acuerdo con esa idea?
M. Falcore: Un álbum conceptual requiere planificación y previsión, pero esta vez no hicimos eso. Simplemente pasamos por experiencias similares con un amor perdido y las canciones se unieron en un tema común casi por coincidencia. Nunca planeamos este disco, simplemente surgió de esta manera. Y eso lo hace sentir muy crudo y honesto para nosotros. La soledad puede ser un sentimiento que obtienes al escuchar este disco, pero hay mucho más que eso. Creo que el tema principal es el amor.
6. Si pudieras explicar este álbum en una palabra, ¿cuál sería? ¿Por qué?
M. Falcore: Creo que una palabra no es suficiente, jaja. Pero seguiré el juego. Diría que amor es la única palabra para este álbum. Está presente o ausente. Y nuestro estado de ser depende de ello. Muchas de las canciones del álbum giran en torno a este tema.
7. ¿Dirías que hubo una gran influencia mientras trabajabas en Under Your Spell o fue más como una mezcla de diferentes?
No puedo pensar en una influencia específica para este disco. No fui conscientemente influenciado por nada más durante el proceso de escritura, solo traté de concentrarme en lo que estaba haciendo en ese momento.
8. ¿Por qué decidiste seguir con otra campaña de PledgeMusic?
M. Falcore: Estábamos preocupados por hacer la primera campaña de Pledge Music, pero nos sorprendió mucho la reacción positiva que obtuvimos de nuestros fans. Y fueron los fans quienes nos animaron a hacer otra campaña, así que se lo debemos a ellos. Nos da la oportunidad de ofrecer a los fans una experiencia única como escuchar el álbum en un estudio con la banda 3 meses antes de su lanzamiento. Y también es una experiencia única para nosotros, porque podemos ver su reacción al álbum de primera mano, lo cual es algo completamente nuevo para nosotros.
9. ¿Cuál de los temas dirías que es el favorito de la banda? ¿Algún favorito personal allí, por cierto?
M. Falcore: Nuestros favoritos siguen cambiando. He estado demasiado cerca del álbum durante demasiado tiempo, así que necesito un tiempo lejos de él. Pero mis favoritos recientes fueron All of Nothing y No tomorrow. Tiendo a gustarme las cosas más oscuras, jaja. Pero necesito un tiempo lejos del disco, así que cuando vuelvo tengo oídos frescos. Pero siempre me interesa saber cuáles son los favoritos de otras personas.
10. ¿Sientes que Under Your Spell tuvo un impacto significativo en ti como banda?
M. Falcore: Cada álbum nos cambia un poco. Y este es nuestro séptimo disco, así que últimamente hemos estado mirando mucho nuestro pasado. El tiempo parece pasar muy rápido cuando te das la vuelta y miras hacia atrás. Hay muchos buenos recuerdos y algunos malos recuerdos de nuestro pasado. Y si puedes apreciar los malos momentos tanto como los buenos, empiezas a ver una belleza especial en la vida. Pero también es importante no insistir demasiado en el pasado y recordar vivir la vida en el momento. Y todavía estamos viviendo este álbum a través de las giras. Tengo muchas ganas de hablar con los fans y ver cómo el álbum cambia a otras personas.
11. ¿Alguna vez has estado bajo un hechizo, literal y/o metafóricamente?
M. Falcore: No literalmente, pero tal vez metafóricamente, jaja.
12. Después de este disco, la gira y todo lo que viene con él, ¿qué otros planes tenéis? ¿Alguna idea con la que trabajará a continuación?
M. Falcore: Tengo algunos proyectos paralelos en los que estoy trabajando ahora, por lo que pueden lanzarse el próximo año. Hice mucha música durante este álbum que realmente no encajaba en el paradigma de Birthday Massacre. Pero es demasiado pronto para decir exactamente qué sucederá con ese material.
13. ¡Muchas gracias por tomarse el tiempo con esta entrevista! Para terminar bien, ¿podrías dar un consejo para aquellos que quieran seguir tus pasos e iniciarse en el mundo de la música?
M. Falcore: Cuando quieras, gracias.
Haz la música que quieres escuchar, no la que crees que otras personas quieren escuchar.

1. What does this album mean for you as a band?
M. Falcore: It's a very personal record, so it has a different meaning for everyone. We've all felt the loss of loved ones and I personally have seen a sad beauty in the way life operates. We all take part in this constant friction from positive to negative and back again. With every love lost there is a new love found. It's easy to fall into despair and to view life as a pointless cycle of suffering. But, if you can appreciate even the worst experiences and accept them whole heartedly along with the good, then you can break the spell and take control of your life.
2. Where did the name come from? Who proposed it?
M. Falcore: Rainbow proposed it. It's the name of one of the songs we wrote together and we felt that it encapsulated the overall feeling of the album. If you've ever been in a turbulent relationship with someone but you're so completely enamoured with that person then you might know what the name means. It has a romantic connotation on the surface of it, but there's a dark undertone that implies a feeling of being ensnared or trapped by someone else's will. There wasn't much discussion about naming the album Under Your Spell because it just made so much sense. Usually we'll have a couple album names floating around but this time Under Your Spell was the only name we considered.
3. There seems to be a lot of electronic, metal sound and a lot of melancholy on the lyrics, but how melancholy in the lyrics, but how would you define the lyrics and music on this disc?
M. Falcore: I don't like to define our music that way. It's not meant to be defined, it's meant to be felt. But I understand the temptation people have to lock down the meaning of a song. It makes it easier to digest, but it does a disservice to the music. What I think is beautiful might be sad to someone else, or both at the same time. It's up to the listener to feel what it means to them.
4. Was there any difficult, challenging step in the creation process? Writing, producing.. which was the hardest part?
M. Falcore: Every step of the way is difficult. We have to love every song on the record otherwise we don't use it. That's part of the reason we take so long to write. There are no filler songs. But we enjoy the challenges. And the greater the challenge the greater the reward. In the end we are always elated when we finish an album. And the feedback from our fans on this album has been amazing and we look forward to playing these new songs live.
5. Because of the lyrics, people could think this is a concept album where you're focused on different types of loneliness, like on serial killers and unresolved crimes for “Hide and Seek.” Would you agree with that idea?
M. Falcore: A concept album takes planning and forethought, but we didn't do that this time. We just happened to be going through similar experiences with lost love and the songs came together in a common theme almost by coincidence. We never planned this record, it just came together this way. And that makes it feel very raw and honest for us. Loneliness might be a feeling you get from listening to this record but there's much more than that. I believe the main theme is love.
6. If you could explain this album in one word, which one would it be? Why?
M. Falcore: I think one word is not enough, haha. But I will play along. I would say Love is the one word for this album. It is either present, or absent. And our state of being depends on it. A lot of the songs on the album revolve around this theme.
7. Would you say that there was a major influence while you worked on Under Your Spell or was it more like a mix of different ones?
I can't think of one specific influence for this record. I wasn't consciously influenced by anything else during the writing process, I just tried to focus on what I was doing in the moment.
8. Why did you decide to go with another PledgeMusic campaign?
M. Falcore: We were apprehensive about doing the first Pledge Music campaign, but we were very surprised by the positive reaction we got from our fans. And it was the fans who encouraged us to do another campaign, so we owe it to them. It gives us an opportunity to offer the fans a unique experience like listening to the album in a studio with the band 3 months before it's released. And it's a unique experience for us too, because we get to see their reaction to the album first hand, which is a completely new thing for us.
9. Which one of the tracks would you say is the band’s favorite? Any personal favorite on there, by the way?
M. Falcore: Our favorites keep changing. I've been too close to the album for too long so I need time away from it. But my recent favorites were All of Nothing and No tomorrow. I tend to like the darker stuff, haha. But, I need time away from the record, so when I come back to it I have fresh ears. But, I'm always interested to hear what other people's favorites are.
10. Do you feel that Under Your Spell made a significant impact in you as a band?
M. Falcore: Every album changes us a little bit. And this is our seventh record, so we've been looking back at our past a lot lately. Time seems to move very fast when you turn around and look behind you. There's a lot of good memories, and some bad memories in our past. And if you can appreciate the bad times as much as the good times you start to see a special beauty in life. But it's also important not to dwell on the past too much and remember to live life in the moment. And we're still living this album through touring. I'm really looking forward to talking to the fans and seeing how the album changes other people.
11. Have you ever been under a spell, literally and/or metaphorically?
M. Falcore: Not literally, but perhaps metaphorically, haha.
12. After this album, the tour and everything that comes with it, what other plans do you have? Any ideas you will be working with next?
M. Falcore: I have some side projects I'm working on now, so that may be released next year. I made a lot of music during this album that didn't really fit into the Birthday Massacre paradigm. But it's too soon to say exactly what will happen with that material.
