Después de leer esa novela gráfica anterior, quería encontrar algo similar. Quería algo que también fuera una novela gráfica autobiográfica y encontré esta que, además, explora el trauma religioso de una manera que, aunque a veces honesta y cruda, es dulce y saludable. Una novela gráfica autobiográfica sobre la mayoría de edad sobre un joven que, al crecer en una comunidad judía ortodoxa, se da cuenta de que es gay y lucha por reconciliar su fe con quién es.

La comunidad judía ortodoxa de Lonnie siempre ha sido clara: no está bien ser gay. Al crecer en una familia devota y asistir a la escuela en una ieshivá, sus padres, sus maestros, y sus amigos le dicen que ser gay es un pecado y una abominación. Pero a medida que crece, se da cuenta de que le gustan los niños y se pregunta qué tipo de vida podrá vivir. A medida que Lonnie expande su mundo más allá de la ieshivá hacia campamentos de teatro, clases universitarias, y noches de cine, ve que la vida que desea no es compatible con la vida de sus padres y con toda su comunidad religiosa.

Sin embargo, aunque es difícil, siempre existe esta inocencia que impregna todo lo reflejado en la obra de arte con los colores brillantes, la atmósfera y la estética general que, al mismo tiempo, muestra la realidad con la que tuvo que lidiar una y otra vez. Hubo momentos en que estaba tan inmerso en la lectura que no podía evitar tener reacciones reales ante lo que estaba sucediendo, principalmente gracias al arte.

Aunque tengo sentimientos encontrados sobre el final, quería más información, más detalles, tal vez incluso una segunda parte sobre cómo fue después de ese descubrimiento, veo por qué fue el final perfecto. El desarrollo fue perfecto, el guión emocionante, el arte magnífico y la escena final le dio ese toque que llevó todo al siguiente nivel.

Si es más un elogio que una reseña es porque se lo merece. No puedo decir nada malo de este libro, del resultado y de la experiencia. Es la lectura perfecta para aquellos que quieren una historia diferente sobre la mayoría de edad pero que también quieren explorar otros temas delicados. Es fácil de disfrutar, sumergirse y enamorarse.

After I read that previous graphic novel, I wanted to find something similar. I wanted something that was also an autobiographic graphic novel, and found this one that, aditionally, explores religious trauma in a way that, while honest and raw at times, is sweet and wholesome. A coming-of-age graphic novel memoir about a young man who, growing up in an Orthodox Jewish community, realizes he's gay and struggles to reconcile his faith with who he is.

Lonnie's Orthodox Jewish community has always been clear: it's not okay to be gay. Growing up in a devout family and going to school at a yeshiva, he's told by his parents, his teachers, and his friends that being gay is a sin and an abomination. But as he gets older, he realizes that he likes boys, and wonders what kind of life he will be able to live. As Lonnie expands his world beyond the yeshiva to theater camp, college classes, and movie nights, he sees that the life he wants isn't compatible with the life of his parents — and his whole religious community.

This emotional graphic novel explores the fissures between identity and religion and charts Lonnie's journey from a kid who loved the rules of the Orthodox Jewish tradition to becoming increasingly independent and defiant, embracing his gay identity and developing his own chosen family.

Loonie's story is more than just a graphic novel. It's a window into the world he was raised in, the double standards he was raised in, and the inner conclicts that abounded in his environment. There was a lot going on, so may changes, rules, politics he had to abide by in order to be a good member of his community, so he offers a complete view of this at all times.

However, while difficult, there's always this innocence permating everything reflected in the artwork with the bright colors, the atmosphere, and general aesthethic that, while showing the reality that he had to deal with time and time again. There were times I was so immersed in the reading I couldn't help but get real reactions at what was happening, mostly thanks to the art.

Even though I have mixed feelings about the ending, I wanted more information, more details, maybe even a second part about what it was like after that discovery, I see why it was the perfect ending for it. The development was perfect, the script was exciting, the art gorgeous, and the final scene gave it that touch that took everything to the next level.

If it's more of a praise than a review, it's because it deserves it. I can't say a single bad thing about this book, about the result, and the experience. It's the perfect reading for those who want a different coming-of-age story but that also want to explore other sensitive topics. It's easy to enjoy, to get immersed in, and fall in love with.

Soy un fanático de todo lo relacionado con la salud mental, más aún cuando es durante la adolescencia. Me encanta cuando un autor da una imagen veraz y real de lo que es ser un adolescente con problemas. Esperaba algo bueno de este libro, pero encontré la perfección absoluta.

La representación y los temas que tocó fueron impecables. Cada detalle estaba tan pulido y cuidado que no podía dejar de leer. Capítulo tras capítulo, traté de adivinar qué les pasaría a Jack, Phil, y todo el elenco, cada uno de ellos con sus propios problemas, su propio círculo del infierno, solo para equivocarme una y otra vez. Llegó un punto en el que dejé de intentarlo por completo, porque Acker no decepciona. Nunca.

Como dije antes, se ha hablado mucho sobre la inclusión de ciertos temas fuertes en los libros juveniles. Si bien es cierto que están sucediendo MUCHAS cosas aquí, presenta una realidad tangible que no debemos ignorar. Hay una línea muy fuerte, cerca del final del libro, que resume esto, va directo al grano sobre el problema entre adolescentes "difíciles" y adultos que "quieren ayudar".

No puedo decir nada malo de este libro porque de principio a fin, desde las referencias en los títulos de los capítulos hasta la montaña rusa de emociones en ellos, y Veronica DiSario pidiendo "justicia para Artpop", Teenage Dirtbags es un libro ridículamente adictivo del que te enamorarás en poco tiempo.

Today I come with another book that I couldn't put down. More than just a teenage romance, I found a story that took my breath away. Each chapter was better than the other, and I kept telling myself that I would just read one more and that's it, and I would go to sleep, just to keep reading. I'm a sucker for all things mental health related, even more when it's during adolescence. I love it when an author gives a truthful, real image of what it is like to be a teenager with issues. I was expecting something good with this book, but I found absolute perfection.

The representation and the topics it touched were immaculate. Every single details was so polished and taken car of that I couldn't stop reading. Chapter after chapter, I tried to guess what would happen to Jack, Phil, and the whole cast, each of them with their own issues, their own circle of hell, just to be proved wrong every time. There came a point when I stopped trying altogether, because Acker doesn't disappoint. Ever.

As I said before, there has been a lot of talk about including certain strong topics in YA books. While it's true that there's A LOT going on in here, it presents a tangible reality that we shouldn't ignore. There's a very strong line, close to the end of the book, that summarizes this, goes straight to the point about the problem between "difficult" teenagers and adults who "want to help."

I can't say a single bad thing about this book because from beginning to end, from the references in the titles of the chapters to the roller coaster of emotions in them, and Veronica DiSario asking for "justice por Artpop," Teenage Dirtbags is a ridiculously addictive book you will fall in love with in no time.

Vi uno de los reels del autor en Instagram y me dio curiosidad saber de qué se trataba esta historia. Cuando leí la sinopsis, supe que tenía que leerla. Era una necesidad emocional, mental, espiritual, y todo lo demás. Y vaya que cumplió con las expectativas. Es una narración ligera pero sólida, fuerte, y emocionalmente intensa. ¡Me dejó sin palabras!

Los personajes están muy bien construides, simpatizas con elles a cada momento, y si bien es cierto que tienes favorites (además de Wes, Skye y Hayden fueron los míos), te pones en sus zapatos más de una vez. Hay tantas emociones, tantas reacciones, que se te meten por las venas hasta dejarte drogado de ansias por más.

Los temas que toca también son pertinentes y actuales. Masculinidad tóxica, inteligencia emocional, prejuicios, homofobia internalizada, traumas, salud mental... ¡La lista es inmensa! Sin embargo, no se hace pesado en ningún momento por el estilo tan pulido del autor. Este hombre cuidó de su bebé hasta hacerlo brillar.

Esto es especialmente importante para mí porque el audiolibro no se queda atrás: Michael Crouch le da una voz honesta a cada escena, cada giro de trama, sin caer en lo gráfico o exagerado. Su voz le dio nueva vida a toda la trama, por no decirle voz a los personajes, de la manera perfecta. ¡Voy a mantener los ojos abiertos por cualquier otra cosa que tenga su nombre!

Es un libro precioso, desgarrador, realista, y que muestra la cara más cruel y enternecedora de ser adolescente. Hubo detalles, líneas que no me gustaron tanto, pero todo funciona tan bien, el efecto es tan inmediato, que es imposible no amarlo. ¡Me declaro fan de Anthony Nerada y de todo lo que escriba en el futuro!

I saw one of the author's reels on Instagram and I was curious to know what this story was about. When I read the synopsis, I knew I had to read it. It was an emotional, mental, spiritual need, and everything in between. And boy did it live up to expectations. It is a light but solid, strong, and emotionally intense narrative. It left me speechless!

The characters are very well constructed, you sympathize with them at every moment, and while it's true you have favorites (in addition to Wes, Skye and Hayden were mine,) you put yourself in their shoes more than once. There are so many emotions, so many reactions, that they get into your veins until they leave you high with the desire for more.

The topics it addresses are also relevant and current. Toxic masculinity, emotional intelligence, prejudice, internalized homophobia, trauma, mental health... The list is immense! However, it does not become heavy at any time due to the author's polished style. This man took care of his baby until it shined.

This is especially important to me because the audiobook is no slouch: Michael Crouch gives an honest voice to every scene, every plot twist, without becoming graphic or over-the-top. His voice gave new life to the entire plot, not to mention giving voice to the characters, in the perfect way. I'll keep my eyes open for anything else with his his name!

It's a beautiful, heartbreaking, realistic book that shows the cruelest and most touching side of being a teenager. There were details, lines that I didn't like so much, but everything works so well, the effect is so immediate, that it's impossible not to love it. I declare myself a fan of Anthony Nerada and everything he writes in the future!

Quería terminar esta semana con una lectura divertida. Una historia que fuese ligera, sencilla, y entretenida a partes iguales, y la conseguí en este cómic inspirado en hechos de la vida real. Me sacó más de una sonrisa, pero se mantuvo fiel a la realidad en vez de edulcorarlo todo: Out of Left Field, por Jonah Newman. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Jonah, estudiante de noveno grado, no es un deportista. Al contrario, le encantan las clases de historia y las películas nerds, y su ineptitud atlética raya en lo trágico. Entonces, ¿qué hace inscribiéndose en el equipo de béisbol? ¿Podría tener algo que ver con el lindo campocorto Elliot?

La sinopsis me llamó mucho la atención porque sonaba inocente, de esas que te recuerdan lo que es ser adolescente. Hasta cierto punto también tiene esa sensación de los 90s. Sin embargo, fue una historia honesta ante todo, realista, sin pretender dar una imagen perfecta o idealizada de lo que es crecer como lo hizo el creador.

Esa es mi parte favorita: lo realista que es. Han habido quienes han criticado la inclusión de ciertos temas, y es un debate tan desgastado que ya roza lo ridículo. Me sorprende que haya gente que se quiere hacer la vista gorda y pretender que estas cosas no pasan. Además, tampoco puedo decir que es una historia explícita o vulgar, solo que no tiene filtros.

Sí me hubiese gustado un mejor desarrollo de los personajes, entender mejor el entorno en el que estaban, porque siento que el autor mantuvo un poco de distancia. El final también lo sentí un poco abrupto, no porque estuviera falto de desarrollo, sino porque el ritmo no me convenció: sí sentí varias cosas en esas últimas páginas, pero no tanto como esperaba.

Con todo esto, Out of Left Field es una historia que muestra la realidad que a veces no queremos ver, aunque desde un enfoque más optimista, que no se avergüenza de su propio contenido. Es una lectura ligera pero muy entretenida que le recomiendo a todos los que quieran saber más al respecto sin dejar de pasarla bien, porque me arrancó más de una sonrisa.

I wanted to end this week with a fun read. A story that was light, simple, and entertaining in equal parts, and I got it in this comic inspired by real life events. It made me smile more than a few times, but it stayed true to reality instead of sugarcoating everything: Out of Left Field, por Jonah Newman. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

Ninth-grader Jonah is not a jock. On the contrary, he loves history class and nerdy movies, and his athletic ineptitude verges on tragic. So, what’s he doing signing up for the baseball team? Could it have something to do with the cute shortstop, Elliot?

For the rest of high school, Jonah faces challenges on and off the baseball field, from heteronormative social pressure to thrilling romance. Realizing who his real friends are, he figures out what really matters and finally recognizes and embraces his gay identity.

Based on debut author-illustrator Jonah Newman’s coming-of-age experiences, Out of Left Field is a big-hearted and funny YA graphic novel about learning to be yourself.

The synopsis caught my attention because it sounded innocent, one of those that remind you what it is like to be a teenager. To some extent it also has that 90s feel. However, it was an honest story above all, realistic, without trying to give a perfect or idealized image of what it is like to grow up as the creator did.

That's my favorite part: how realistic it is. There have been those who have criticized the inclusion of certain topics, and it is a debate so worn out that it's already bordering on the ridiculous. It surprises me that there are people who want to turn a blind eye and pretend that these things don't happen. Also, I can't say that it's an explicit or vulgar story, it just has no filters.

I would have liked better development of the characters, a better understanding of the environment they were in, because I feel that the author kept a little distance. I also felt the ending was a bit abrupt, not because it lacked development, but because the rhythm did not convince me: I did feel several things in those last pages, but not as much as I expected.

With all this, Out of Left Field is a story that shows the reality that sometimes we don't want to see, although from a more optimistic approach, which is not ashamed of its own content. It is a light but very entertaining read that I recommend to everyone who wants to know more about it while still having a good time, because it made me smile more than once.

Reseña / Review: Samson & Domingo

Espero que hoy estén de humor para un poco de poesía. Hace poco encontré una lectura más que interesante por su estructura, sus temas, y por recordarme que me encantan las novelas juveniles: Se trata de Samson & Domingo, por Gume Laurel III. Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Samson y Domingo se enamoran durante el verano previo al tercer año de secundaria. Pero Samson es el jugador estrella del equipo de fútbol de Weslaco North y Domingo es el trompetista de la banda de Weslaco South. Una vez que comienzan las clases, su nuevo amor se ve desafiado por aquellos que no están de acuerdo con que sus escuelas rivales se mezclen, especialmente el hermano mayor de Domingo, Pablo, un jugador de fútbol de Weslaco South. Esta vez decidí salir totalmente de mi zona de comodidad para atreverme con algo más diferente. Esta novela en verso pareció la opción correcta, ¡y vaya que lo fue! Fue una lectura bastante ligera, sencilla, fácil de disfrutar, y que hizo que el tiempo se me pasara volando. Admito que el inicio no fue lo que esperaba, pero ya estaba inmerso en la lectura a las pocas páginas.

La estructura es un tanto experimental, diferente a lo que esperaba, y es justo allí que está el atractivo: te muestra las cosas desde un nuevo punto de vista sin perder el sentimiento de familiaridad, como si estuvieras leyendo una historia que ya conoces. Hasta cierto punto es así, pues se trata de un romance inspirado en la historia de Sansón. Sin embargo, sigue sintiéndose fresca.

Ya había leído novelas en verso, pero esta se me hizo más interesante. Sin embargo, sentí que aún estaba perdiéndome de más desarrollo, más inmersión. La narración fue excesivamente sencilla por momentos, y hubiera preferido que fuese más detallada, más artística, en vez de quedarse solo en lo que se siente como la punta del iceberg.

En general, es una lectura muy bonita que te recuerda la inocencia de ser joven, de aventurarse a lo que parece imposible, y con un elemento de fantasía tan leve que a veces parece más un sueño, hasta un desenlace que te hace sonreír luego de sorprenderte. Perfecto para pasar el rato, Samson & Domingo te saca más de una sonrisa.

I hope you're in the mood for some poetry today. I recently found a more than interesting read for its structure, its themes, and for reminding me that I love young adult novels: It's Samson & Domingo, by Gume Laurel III. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

High/Low written in verse. 

Samson and Domingo fall in love during the summer before their junior year of high school. But Samson is the star player of Weslaco North’s football team and Domingo is a French horn player for Weslaco South’s marching band. Once school starts, their new love is challenged by those who don’t agree with their rival schools mixing, especially Domingo’s older brother, Pablo, a football player for South. As if that wasn’t enough, Samson’s Olympian-like athleticism is shrouded in mystery; the source of his strength is a secret he has vowed to keep his entire life. As Samson and Domingo’s love blossoms, Samson learns to trust Domingo more than he has ever trusted anyone before, and Domingo opens his heart once again after heartbreak. But will their love be Samson’s downfall?

This time I decided to totally get out of my comfort zone to try something more different. This verse novel seemed like the right choice, and boy was it! It was a fairly light, simple read, easy to enjoy, and it made the time fly by. I admit that the beginning was not what I expected, but I was already immersed in after reading a few pages.

The structure is somewhat experimental, different from what I expected, and that's exactly where the appeal lies: it shows you things from a new point of view without losing the feeling of familiarity, as if you were reading a story that you already know. To a certain extent this is the case, since it is a romance inspired by the story of Samson. However, it still feels fresh.

I had already read novels in verse, but this one seemed more interesting to me. However, I felt like I was still missing out on more development, more immersion. The narrative seemed excessively simple at times, and I would have preferred it to be more detailed, more artistic, instead of remaining just what feels like the tip of the iceberg.

Overall, it's a very nice read that reminds you of the innocence of being young, of venturing into what seems impossible, and with an element of fantasy so slight that sometimes it seems more like a dream, until an ending that makes you smile after surprising you. Perfect to pass the time, Samson & Domingo brings more than a smile to your face.

Manga: He's Expecting Vol. 1

Hola, gente bonita. Ha pasado un tiempo. Estaba poniendo muchas cosas en orden, sin embargo, tuve la oportunidad de seguir leyendo, y hay un manga que no esperaba que me gustara tanto por la realidad que presenta. Está relacionado con temas contemporáneos (llamados complicados), pero presentados de una manera tan simple que te hace pensar. Se trata de He's Expecting Vol. 1, por Eri Sakai. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Cuando Kentaro Hiyama, un hombre con mentalidad profesional, descubre que está embarazado, cambiará el curso de algo más que su propia vida. En el Japón del experimento mental de Eri Sakai, han pasado diez años desde que el sexo masculino obtuvo espontáneamente la capacidad de quedar embarazado, y la sociedad ha luchado por adaptarse. Kentaro al principio no está seguro de quién podría ser la madre y rápidamente se encuentra chocando con actitudes regresivas y políticas discriminatorias, la mayoría de las cuales preceden mucho al embarazo masculino. En su vida anterior, nunca había pensado dos veces en nada de eso; es posible que incluso hubiera tenido los mismos puntos de vista. Pero a través de sus encuentros con otras personas embarazadas, y motivado por su nueva perspectiva, Kentaro convierte sus habilidades en negocios y marketing para lograr cambios sociales.

Este es un manga divertido que habla sobre misoginia, embarazos no deseados, estándares dobles, etc. Sin embargo, lo hace desde un lugar de empoderamiento y trabajo social. Algunos de los temas son difíciles, pero si bien se tratan como tales, no hay tanto pesimismo como cabría esperar. A veces parece un poco idealista, pero sin duda es una lectura reconfortante.

Mi aspecto favorito fue el guión simple pero creativo. En el camino conocemos nuevos personajes con Kentaro, a quienes conoce o influye. Llegas a ver diferentes aspectos de este nuevo embarazo masculino y cómo afecta la vida diaria de varias personas sin importar su género. ¡Aún mejor es el hecho de que no te confunde!

La única queja que tengo es que apenas hubo construcción del mundo. Hubo algunas escenas que me hicieron pensar más seriamente en este escenario, ofrecieron una visión más profunda y detallada de todo, pero fueron tan pocas que no terminé tan inmerso en la lectura como quería. Espero, sin embargo, que los próximos volúmenes sean mucho mejores.

Yo recomendaría He's Expecting Vol. 1 a todo aquel que quiera explorar más profundamente qué significa ser hombre, mujer, los roles de género, nuestra misoginia interiorizada, pero aún así quiera pasar un rato divertido con una lectura sana. Este manga tiene lo mejor de ambos mundos, con un potencial educativo increíble que podría ayudar a mucha gente. Creativo, entretenido, y atractivo. ¡No puedo esperar al próximo volumen!

Hi, beautiful people. It's been a while. I was putting a lot of stuff in order, however, I got the chance to keep reading, and there's a manga I didn't expect to like so much for the reality that it presented. It's related to contemporary (so-called complicated) topics, but introduced in such a simple way that it makes you think. When career-minded Kentaro Hiyama finds out that he's pregnant, it will change the course of more than just his own life. In the Japan of Eri Sakai's thought experiment, ten years have passed since the male sex has spontaneously gained the ability to get pregnant, and society has struggled to adjust. Kentaro isn't sure at first who the mother might be, and quickly finds himself butting up against regressive attitudes and discriminatory policies-most of which long precede male pregnancy. In his previous life, he'd never given any of it a second thought-he may have even held the same views. But through his encounters with other pregnant people, and galvanized by his new perspective, Kentaro turns his skills in business and marketing to effecting social change.

This is a funny manga that speaks about misogyny, unwanted pregnancies, double standards, and so on. However, it does it from a place of empowerment and social work. Some of the topics are hard, but while they're treated as such, there's not that much doom and gloom that you would expect. It does seem a bit idealistic at times, but it is a comfort reading for sure.

My favorite aspect of it was the simple, yet creative script. We get to meet new characters along the way with Kentaro that he either meets or influences. You get to see different aspects of this new male pregnancy and how it affects the daily life of several people regardless of their gender. Even better is the fact that you don't get confused!

The only complain that I have is that there was hardly any world-building. There were a few scenes that made me think more seriously about this scenario, they offered a more in-depth, detailed view of everything, but they were so few I didn't ended up as immersed in the reading as I wanted to. I'm hoping, however, that the next volumes are much better.

I would recommend He's Expecting Vol. 1 to anyone who wants to explore more deeply what it means to be a man, a woman, gender roles, our internalized misogyny, but still want to have a fun time with a wholesome reading. This manga has the best of both worlds, with an incredible educational potential that could help a lot of people. Creative, entertaining, and engaging. Can't wait for the next volume!
