O. M. G. ¡Hace tiempo que no encontraba una lectura tan adictiva! Literalmente, no pude soltarla desde que empecé. Desde el ritmo hasta los personajes, los temas que trata y la forma en lo hace, estuve inmerso en Skater Boy, por Anthony Nerada, con un audiolibro narrado por Michael Crouch. Gracias a la editoriales por las copias para reseñar!

El chico malo residente de Stonebridge High, Wesley "Big Mac" Mackenzie, está reprobando el último año, gracias a su ira desenfrenada, sus amigos escandalosos, y su tendencia a abandonar sus deberes por andar en patineta y una obsesión secreta por la fotografía. Entonces, cuando su madre lo arrastra a una producción de El Cascanueces, Wes no está interesado en absoluto. . . hasta que ve a Tristan Monroe. El mismísimo Cascanueces.

Wes sabe que Tristan no debería agradarle; después de todo, es bailarín de ballet y Wes es un chico muy reservado. Pero cuando empiezan a pasar tiempo juntos, Wes parece no poder sacarse a Tristan de su cabeza. Impulsado por un nuevo sentido de propósito, Wes comienza a pensar que, a pesar de que todas las figuras de autoridad le dicen lo contrario, tal vez pueda cambiar para mejor y graduarse a tiempo.

Vi uno de los reels del autor en Instagram y me dio curiosidad saber de qué se trataba esta historia. Cuando leí la sinopsis, supe que tenía que leerla. Era una necesidad emocional, mental, espiritual, y todo lo demás. Y vaya que cumplió con las expectativas. Es una narración ligera pero sólida, fuerte, y emocionalmente intensa. ¡Me dejó sin palabras!

Los personajes están muy bien construides, simpatizas con elles a cada momento, y si bien es cierto que tienes favorites (además de Wes, Skye y Hayden fueron los míos), te pones en sus zapatos más de una vez. Hay tantas emociones, tantas reacciones, que se te meten por las venas hasta dejarte drogado de ansias por más.

Los temas que toca también son pertinentes y actuales. Masculinidad tóxica, inteligencia emocional, prejuicios, homofobia internalizada, traumas, salud mental... ¡La lista es inmensa! Sin embargo, no se hace pesado en ningún momento por el estilo tan pulido del autor. Este hombre cuidó de su bebé hasta hacerlo brillar.

Esto es especialmente importante para mí porque el audiolibro no se queda atrás: Michael Crouch le da una voz honesta a cada escena, cada giro de trama, sin caer en lo gráfico o exagerado. Su voz le dio nueva vida a toda la trama, por no decirle voz a los personajes, de la manera perfecta. ¡Voy a mantener los ojos abiertos por cualquier otra cosa que tenga su nombre!

Es un libro precioso, desgarrador, realista, y que muestra la cara más cruel y enternecedora de ser adolescente. Hubo detalles, líneas que no me gustaron tanto, pero todo funciona tan bien, el efecto es tan inmediato, que es imposible no amarlo. ¡Me declaro fan de Anthony Nerada y de todo lo que escriba en el futuro!

I saw one of the author's reels on Instagram and I was curious to know what this story was about. When I read the synopsis, I knew I had to read it. It was an emotional, mental, spiritual need, and everything in between. And boy did it live up to expectations. It is a light but solid, strong, and emotionally intense narrative. It left me speechless!

The characters are very well constructed, you sympathize with them at every moment, and while it's true you have favorites (in addition to Wes, Skye and Hayden were mine,) you put yourself in their shoes more than once. There are so many emotions, so many reactions, that they get into your veins until they leave you high with the desire for more.

The topics it addresses are also relevant and current. Toxic masculinity, emotional intelligence, prejudice, internalized homophobia, trauma, mental health... The list is immense! However, it does not become heavy at any time due to the author's polished style. This man took care of his baby until it shined.

This is especially important to me because the audiobook is no slouch: Michael Crouch gives an honest voice to every scene, every plot twist, without becoming graphic or over-the-top. His voice gave new life to the entire plot, not to mention giving voice to the characters, in the perfect way. I'll keep my eyes open for anything else with his his name!

It's a beautiful, heartbreaking, realistic book that shows the cruelest and most touching side of being a teenager. There were details, lines that I didn't like so much, but everything works so well, the effect is so immediate, that it's impossible not to love it. I declare myself a fan of Anthony Nerada and everything he writes in the future!
