Comic: Out of Left Field

Quería terminar esta semana con una lectura divertida. Una historia que fuese ligera, sencilla, y entretenida a partes iguales, y la conseguí en este cómic inspirado en hechos de la vida real. Me sacó más de una sonrisa, pero se mantuvo fiel a la realidad en vez de edulcorarlo todo: Out of Left Field, por Jonah Newman. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Un adolescente gay nerd se lanza de cabeza al mundo del béisbol de la escuela secundaria en esta novela gráfica LGBTQ+ semiautobiográfica.

Jonah, estudiante de noveno grado, no es un deportista. Al contrario, le encantan las clases de historia y las películas nerds, y su ineptitud atlética raya en lo trágico. Entonces, ¿qué hace inscribiéndose en el equipo de béisbol? ¿Podría tener algo que ver con el lindo campocorto Elliot?

Durante el resto de la escuela secundaria, Jonah enfrenta desafíos dentro y fuera del campo de béisbol, desde la presión social heteronormativa hasta un romance emocionante. Al darse cuenta de quiénes son sus verdaderos amigos, descubre lo que realmente importa y finalmente reconoce y acepta su identidad gay.

Basada en las experiencias de adolescencia del autor e ilustrador debutante Jonah Newman, Out of Left Field es una novela gráfica juvenil divertida y de gran corazón sobre cómo aprender a ser uno mismo.

La sinopsis me llamó mucho la atención porque sonaba inocente, de esas que te recuerdan lo que es ser adolescente. Hasta cierto punto también tiene esa sensación de los 90s. Sin embargo, fue una historia honesta ante todo, realista, sin pretender dar una imagen perfecta o idealizada de lo que es crecer como lo hizo el creador.

Esa es mi parte favorita: lo realista que es. Han habido quienes han criticado la inclusión de ciertos temas, y es un debate tan desgastado que ya roza lo ridículo. Me sorprende que haya gente que se quiere hacer la vista gorda y pretender que estas cosas no pasan. Además, tampoco puedo decir que es una historia explícita o vulgar, solo que no tiene filtros.

Sí me hubiese gustado un mejor desarrollo de los personajes, entender mejor el entorno en el que estaban, porque siento que el autor mantuvo un poco de distancia. El final también lo sentí un poco abrupto, no porque estuviera falto de desarrollo, sino porque el ritmo no me convenció: sí sentí varias cosas en esas últimas páginas, pero no tanto como esperaba.

Con todo esto, Out of Left Field es una historia que muestra la realidad que a veces no queremos ver, aunque desde un enfoque más optimista, que no se avergüenza de su propio contenido. Es una lectura ligera pero muy entretenida que le recomiendo a todos los que quieran saber más al respecto sin dejar de pasarla bien, porque me arrancó más de una sonrisa.

I wanted to end this week with a fun read. A story that was light, simple, and entertaining in equal parts, and I got it in this comic inspired by real life events. A nerdy gay teenager jumps headfirst into the bro-y world of high school baseball in this semi-autobiographical LGBTQ+ graphic novel.

Ninth-grader Jonah is not a jock. On the contrary, he loves history class and nerdy movies, and his athletic ineptitude verges on tragic. So, what’s he doing signing up for the baseball team? Could it have something to do with the cute shortstop, Elliot?

For the rest of high school, Jonah faces challenges on and off the baseball field, from heteronormative social pressure to thrilling romance. Realizing who his real friends are, he figures out what really matters and finally recognizes and embraces his gay identity.

Based on debut author-illustrator Jonah Newman’s coming-of-age experiences, Out of Left Field is a big-hearted and funny YA graphic novel about learning to be yourself.

The synopsis caught my attention because it sounded innocent, one of those that remind you what it is like to be a teenager. To some extent it also has that 90s feel. However, it was an honest story above all, realistic, without trying to give a perfect or idealized image of what it is like to grow up as the creator did.

That's my favorite part: how realistic it is. There have been those who have criticized the inclusion of certain topics, and it is a debate so worn out that it's already bordering on the ridiculous. It surprises me that there are people who want to turn a blind eye and pretend that these things don't happen. Also, I can't say that it's an explicit or vulgar story, it just has no filters.

I would have liked better development of the characters, a better understanding of the environment they were in, because I feel that the author kept a little distance. I also felt the ending was a bit abrupt, not because it lacked development, but because the rhythm did not convince me: I did feel several things in those last pages, but not as much as I expected.

With all this, Out of Left Field is a story that shows the reality that sometimes we don't want to see, although from a more optimistic approach, which is not ashamed of its own content. It is a light but very entertaining read that I recommend to everyone who wants to know more about it while still having a good time, because it made me smile more than once.
