Buenos días, gente bonita. Hoy quiero compartirles un cómic que me encontré mientras caminaba por allí, y que resultó ser una excelente sorpresa. Es una lectura que combina drama distópico adulto con fantasía oscura postapocalíptica. Suena muy bueno, y lo es. Se trata de Swamp Thing: Green Hell Book One, con guión de Jeff Lemire, arte de Doug Mahnke, colores de David Baron, y lettering de Steve Wands.

Swamp Thing es de esos personajes que siempre he querido conocer. La idea de un defensor de la tierra y la naturaleza, junto con comentarios sobre la monstruosidad de la humanidad y cómo esta destruye todo lo que toca, es fascinante por todos los ángulos. Aquí nos encontramos justamente con eso, con un planeta destruido cuya población hace lo imposible para sobrevivir, lo cual incluye desiciones no muy honestas y que los hacen menos humanos.
La idea de entidades superhumanas que deciden el futuro del planeta no es nueva, pero la presentación es muy atractiva pues se enfoca más en un padre soltero que intenta mantener la inocencia de su hija intacta. Aquí no hay historias de romances imposibles entre damiselas y monstruos, sino un hombre normal que lucha contra bestias con caras humanas.
Me hubiese gustado que este primer libro incluyera más información sobre cómo funciona la sociedad en la que se encuentran los personajes, qué llevó a que el planeta colapsara, puntualmente, aunque entiendo que por tema de espacio no se puede desarrollar tanto como uno quisiera. Sin embargo, algunos datos para entrar en contexto no habrían quedado mal.
Para mí, Swamp Thing: Green Hell Book One es una historia con potencial y que es atractiva tanto para adolescentes como adultos. El guión de Jeff Lemire te mantiene interesado en todo momento, el arte de Doug Mahnke y colores de David Baron juegan mucho con los contrastes gráficos, mientras que el leterring de Steve Wands fue múy cómodo de leer. Estoy ansioso por saber qué pasará más adelante, y qué será de estos personajes.

Swamp Thing is one of those characters I've always wanted to meet. The idea of a defender of the earth and nature, along with comments on the monstrosity of humanity and how it destroys everything it touches, is fascinating from every angle. Here we find just that, a destroyed planet whose population does the impossible to survive, which includes decisions that are not very honest and that make them less human.
The idea of superhuman entities that decide the future of the planet is not new, but the presentation is very attractive as it focuses more on a single father who tries to keep the innocence of his daughter intact. There are no stories of impossible romances between damsels and monsters here, but a normal man fighting beasts with human faces.
I would have liked this first book to include more information on how the society in which the characters find themselves works, what led to the collapse of the planet, specifically, although I understand that due to space issues, it cannot be developed as much as one would like. However, some data to enter context wouldn't have been bad.
For me, Swamp Thing: Green Hell Book One is a story with potential and one that appeals to both teens and adults. Jeff Lemire's script keeps you interested at all times, Doug Mahnke's art and David Baron's colors play a lot with graphic contrasts, while Steve Wands' lettering was very comfortable to read. I'm anxious to know what will happen next, and what will become of these characters.
