Hoy traigo un libro diferente a los que suelo reseñar. No deja de ser aterrador; es el tipo de cosas de las que uno oye hablar o ve en televisión, pero se trata de una práctica que sigue ocurriendo y de la que hay personas reales recuperándose. Me refiero a Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors’ Stories of Conversion Therapy, por Lucas F. W. Wilson. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia de lectura anticipada!

Fuimos sometidos a prácticas deshumanizadoras por parte de personas que buscaban borrarnos de la existencia.

Esta obra recopilatoria reúne las experiencias de quienes han sido sometidos a terapias de conversión dirigidas a personas queer; es un esfuerzo por exponer la verdadera naturaleza de estas prácticas, pseudocientíficas, fraudulentas, ineficaces y profundamente traumáticas, así como por reconocer y escuchar a los supervivientes. Con las aportaciones de Gregory Elsasser-Chavez, Chaim Levin, Lexie Bean, Syre Klenke y muchas otras personas de todo el espectro LGBTQ+, esta obra busca garantizar que lo ocurrido no vuelva a suceder, y no sucederá, a las generaciones futuras.

Este fue un libro duro, y lo digo muy en serio. Puedo leer sobre todo tipo de pesadillas en el ámbito del terror y la ficción, pero cuando se trata de la vida real, la situación cambia. Se trata de las vivencias auténticas de estas personas, de un daño muy real y de un trauma muy real. Aunque esto hizo que la lectura resultara difícil por momentos, también aportó una nueva dimensión de significado a Shame-Sex Attraction.

Como ocurre con muchas antologías, hay historias que impactan más que otras y estilos que funcionan mejor que otros; sin embargo, esto no significa que solo las historias más desgarradoras sean las que importan. Significa que escuchamos voces diversas y que hay muchas personas recuperándose de estas experiencias. Cabe destacar la labor de Lucas F. W. Wilson como editor, ya que logró que conectara con la mayoría de los relatos.

Coincido con otra reseña en que incluir historias más recientes habría hecho que el libro destacara aún más. Por ejemplo, existe un caso muy reciente en el que la jueza Eboni K. Williams intervino en una demanda relacionada con la terapia de conversión entre un padre y su hijo gay; aunque obviamente era imposible incluirlo (el caso es de este año), demuestra que esta práctica sigue vigente. Todavía hay personas pasando por esto, y hubiera querido poder leer sus historias.

En términos generales, Shame-Sex Attraction es una obra necesaria para el mundo actual. Todavía hay demasiados estados en EE. UU. que no prohíben esta práctica atroz. Es preciso seguir aprendiendo sobre esta parte de la historia y amplificar las voces de los supervivientes, que es exactamente lo que Lucas F. W. Wilson ha logrado con este libro. Es tan necesario y relevante que lo recomiendo encarecidamente.

It is still horrifying; it is the type of thing you would hear about or watch on TV, but it's a practice that is still happening with real people recovering from it. I'm talking about Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors’ Stories of Conversion Therapy, by Lucas Wilson. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

We are survivors.

We were subjected to dehumanizing practices by people who sought our erasure.

We believe telling our stories is both powerful and political.

This edited collection brings together the experiences of those who have been subjected to queer conversion therapy - it is an effort to expose conversion practices for what they are - pseudoscientific, bogus, ineffective, and wildly traumatic - and to recognise and listen to survivors. With contributions from Gregory Elsasser-Chavez, Chaim Levin, Lexie Bean, Syre Klenke, and many more from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum - this is an attempt to ensure that what happened within these pages cannot - and will not - happen to future generations.

This was a heavy book, and I mean it when I say it. I can read all sorts of nightmares when it comes to horror and fiction, but when it comes to real life, things are different. This is what people actually went through, very real damage and very real trauma. Although this made it hard to read at times, it added a new layer of meaning to Shame-Sex Attraction

As with many collections, there are stories that will impact more than others, styles that will work more than others, and this doesn't mean that the heaviest stories are the only ones that matter. It means that you will hear different voices. It means that there are a lot of people recovering from these experiences. Points for Lucas F. W. Wilson as the editor, however, because I was able to connect with most of the stories.

I agree with another reviewer in that more recent stories would have made the book stand out much more; however. There's a very recent case where Judge Eboni K. Williams dealt with a conversion therapy lawsuit between a father and his gay son, for example, and while this one was obviously impossible to include (the case is from this year), it means that this practice is still happening. There are still people going through this, and I would have liked to read these people's stories.

In general terms, Shame-Sex Attraction is necessary for today's world. There are still too many states here in the US that do not prohibit this horrendous practice. We need to keep learning about this part of history and amplifying survivors' voices, which is exactly what Lucas F. W. Wilson did with this book. It's so needed and so relevant that I cannot recommend it enough.
