Comic: Hotel Limbo 1

Gente bonita, hay un cómic que necesitan leer. Hablo en serio. Es una de esas joyas que pocas veces se encuentran así como así, una historia que me encanta con una propuesta gráfica preciosa. Estoy hablando de Hotel Limbo Book 1, por Ben Harel. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

¡Prepárate para una mezcla de situaciones disparatadas y momentos conmovedores en esta adaptación a novela gráfica de un popular webcómic!

Tras despertar en medio de la nada, un joven es reclutado a la fuerza para trabajar en el Hotel Limbo como su nuevo botones (BellBoy, o «BB», para abreviar). Entre máscaras mágicas, gatos gigantes, un personal misterioso y un hotel que no para de moverse, BB pronto descubrirá que ocuparse del «equipaje» cobra un sentido muy distinto cuando todos los huéspedes están muertos.

En este debút de la serie, el guionista Ben Harel colabora con 28 artistas (!) de todo el mundo para dar vida a una historia sobre la muerte. Mientras la comedia se entrelaza con el drama y el misterio, cada cambio de tono y cada frontera difusa se ven realzados por un estilo visual en constante evolución, creando una mezcla de géneros repleta de aventuras mortales (y relacionadas con la muerte).

Si leyeron la sinopsis, ya saben que hay 28 artistas involucrados en este proyecto. Y si no la leyeron, pues ya lo saben. Tantos estilos diferentes de dibujo, de coloración, de diseño, propuestas visuales tan distintas como hermosas. ¡Nunca había visto algo así en un cómic! Aunque sí es cierto que se trata más bien de un webcómic, el que sea publicado en físico es prueba del éxito de Ben Harel.

Hotel Limbo Book 1 empieza sencilla pero no tarda en ponerse más y más interesante. Los personajes van teniendo sus momentos de estrellato, aunque sin dudas el estrellato se lo lleva BB. Además, podría parecer arriesgado juntar tantos estilos en un solo proyecto, pero el guión se adapta a la perfección a cada cambio que ocurre.

Lo que más me gustó fue justamente eso, la forma en que la historia evoluciona, la forma en que Ben Harel juega con el lector, y cómo los personajes evolucionan sin perder su escencia. BB es cada vez más humano y no solo un chiste andante, por ejemplo, y aunque sus intenciones son nobles, termina haciendo mucho daño en su momento. Esto es un punto clave tanto para él como para la historia, así que no voy a decir mucho al respecto.

Considerándolo todo, Hotel Limbo Book 1 es un proyecto precioso, riesgoso, original, cuyo encanto combina la nostalgia con lo moderno. Me encantó de principio a fin, así que se lo recomiendo a todos los que estén interesados en la fantasía oscura, fantasías modernas, y la exploración de lo que significa tener un poder más allá de lo posible. Pone muchas cosas en perspectivas, especialmente cuando quieres ayudar a tantas personas como puedas.

After awakening in the middle of nowhere, a young man is forcefully inducted into the Hotel Limbo as its new bellboy (“BB” for short). Faced with magical masks, giant cats, a mysterious staff, and a hotel that just won’t sit still, BB will soon learn that helping with “baggage” means something very different when all the guests are dead.

In this series debut, writer Ben Harel teams up with 28 artists (!) from around the world to breathe life into a story about death. As comedy dances with drama and mystery, every tonal shift and blurred line is accentuated by an ever-changing visual style, creating a genre-bending medley of deadly (and death-ly) adventures.

If you’ve read the synopsis, you already know there are 28 artists involved in this project. And if you haven’t, well, now you know. There is such a wide array of drawing, coloring, and design styles, visual approaches that are as distinct as they are beautiful. I’ve never seen anything quite like it in a comic! Although it's actually a webcomic, its physical release is a testament to Ben Harel’s success.

Hotel Limbo Book 1 starts off simply but quickly becomes increasingly compelling. The characters all get their moments to shine, though BB undoubtedly steals the spotlight. Bringing so many styles together in a single project might seem risky, but the script adapts perfectly to every shift that occurs.

That was exactly what I liked most: the way the story evolves, the way Ben Harel plays with the reader, and how the characters grow without losing their essence. BB, for instance, becomes increasingly human rather than just a walking punchline; while his intentions are noble, he ends up causing significant harm at one point. This is a pivotal moment for both him and the story, so I won’t say too much about it.

All in all, Hotel Limbo Book 1 is a beautiful, daring, and original project that blends nostalgia with a modernity. I loved it from start to finish, so I highly recommend it to anyone interested in dark fantasy, modern fantasy, and exploring what it means to wield power that defies the limits of the possible. It puts a lot of things into perspective, especially when you want to help as many people as you can.
