Ya les dije que estaba leyendo poesía. Hoy les digo que hubo un libro que me encantó. Con Choking Back the Devil, de Donna Lynch, descubrí que lo mío es la poesía de horror. El tiempo se me pasó volando, me encantó la mayoría de los poemas, y en definitiva quedé con ganas de más. Siento que esto es justo lo que he estado buscando.

Choking Back the Devil de Donna Lynch es una invocación, una antigua invitación que convoca a la oscuridad interior y canaliza a esos espíritus solitarios que buscan un anfitrión. Es una colección que vive en el reino de los fantasmas y las maldiciones familiares, la brujería y las leyendas urbanas, y si eres lo suficientemente valiente como para mirar detrás del velo, las apariciones que impregnan estas páginas romperán sellos y abrirán puertas, cortarán gargantas y romperán espejos.

Admito que no tenía ni idea de que algo como esto podía existir, pero me alegra haberme topado con ello. Se me ocurrió buscar recomendaciones de poesía gótica, y este estaba entre los recomendados. Me enganchó desde la primera página, fue algo así como amor a primera vista. Si ya la poesía se lee rápido, este libro se me fue en un suspiro.

Hay contenido gráfico de diferentes niveles, descripciones que pueden ponerte la piel de punta o de plano darte escalofríos, junto con otros poemas que son más historias o relatos en forma de verso. Es una colección que se disfruta con gusto, de esas que no quieres que se acaben por lo bien que lo estás pasando.

Ese es justamente mi problema principal. Lo breve. Hay algunos textos que no funcionaron del todo para mí, que parecían forzados, artificiales, sin la pasión que había en los demás, especialmente el último, que no me convenció. Terminé con un sabor un tanto agridulce por ello. Siento que de haber sido más extenso, el resultado habría sido mucho mejor.

En conclusión, una lectura para las noches en vela, perfecta para hacerte amigo de tus pesadillas y hablarles de tu día. Choking Back the Devil es un libro diferente, lleno de sorpresas que Donna Lynch ha disfrutado de crear. Pienso que incluso podría leerlo de nuevo para revivir la magia de esa primera vez, yo que no releo nunca.

Choking Back the Devil by Donna Lynch is an invocation, an ancient invitation that summons the darkness within and channels those lonely spirits looking for a host. It's a collection that lives in the realm of ghosts and family curses, witchcraft and urban legends, and if you're brave enough to peek behind the veil, the hauntings that permeate these pages will break seals and open doorways, cut throats and shatter mirrors.

I admit I had no idea something like this could exist, but I'm glad I stumbled upon it. It occurred to me to look for gothic poetry recommendations, and this was among the recommended ones. I was hooked from the first page, it was like love at first sight. If poetry is already read quickly, this book left me in a breath.

There's graphic content of different levels, descriptions that can give you goosebumps or downright chills, along with other poems that are more stories or narratives in verse form. It's a collection that's a pleasure to enjoy, one of those that you don't want to end because of how much fun you're having.

That's exactly my main problem. The brevity. There are some texts that didn't quite work for me, that seemed forced, artificial, without the passion that there was in the others, especially the last one, which didn't convince me. I ended up with a bit of a bittersweet taste because of it. I feel that if it had been more extensive, the result would have been much better.

In conclusion, a read for sleepless nights, perfect for making friends with your nightmares and telling them about your day. Choking Back the Devil is a different book, full of surprises that Donna Lynch has enjoyed creating. I think I could even read it again to relive the magic of that first time, me who never rereads.

Consejos para Wattpad / Wattpad Tips

Es irónico que haga una entrada como esta. No soy de los más leídos en Wattpad, tampoco soy famoso, mucho menos he logrado publicar con una editorial alguna de mis historias allí. Sin embargo, he probado algunas cosas que me funcionaron, y amigos me han dado también algunos consejos.

1. Ten un calendario: Es la más fiable, y uno de los problemas de Medicus. Hace días leí "imagina que los productores de tu serie favorita deciden sacar episodios cuando se acuerdan". Obviamente voy a perder todo el interés, además de que se me olvidan los detalles. Una buena forma de empezar en Wattpad es saber qué tan seguido puedes publicar, y aferrarte a ese calendario. Dicen por allí que 2 o 3 veces a la semana es lo ideal.

2. Publica cuando ya termines el libro: Esta fue una solución para ese problema. Escribí Reflejos por completo antes de subirla por primera vez a Wattpad. Todos los días había algo nuevo, y por casi dos meses estaba publicando constantemente en redes sociales. Hay incluso autores que suben la novela entera en un día, cosa que no he probado (por ahora).

3. Ten más de una historia a la vez:  Esto me lo dijo una amiga a la que le funcionó y tiene mucho sentido. Te ves más activo, más productivo, y la gente te nota mucho más. También abarcas un abanico más amplio de lectores, y puede que los de una historia se interesen por la otra, y vice versa. Es algo que definitivamente voy a probar.

4. Contenido multimedia: Algo que caracteriza a Wattpad es que puedes compartir imágenes, canciones, videos, cualquier cosa, que apoye a la narración. Lo he hecho con varias de mis historias, buscándome una banda sonora e imágenes referenciales que llamen la atención, y funciona muy bien. Una vez alguien me comentó "Me encantó la historia, la música (toda de mi estilo, por fin!)" en Alterno Nerva. ¡Es mi comentario favorito en la vida!

5. Participa en desafíos y concursos: Rojo Carmín, Criptam, Los Colores de la Muerte, y Ars Viatoris nacieron así. ¡Es un ejercicio de creatividad increíble! Además de que te hace salir de tu zona de comodidad, te ayuda con la visibilidad.

6. Lee historias allí: Otro de mis problemas, porque me cuesta leer historias que no están terminadas, pero que es obvio: a nadie le gusta un ermitaño narcisista. Sin embargo, me encanta lo que escriben Lucía Arca, Sofía Olguín, León Küdell, y Natalia Hatt. Se los recomiendo a ojos cerrados.

Siempre estoy pidiendo sugerencias, así que si tienen alguna otra, o algo que les haya servido a ustedes en particular, ¡cuéntenme y les estaré agradecido!

It's ironic that I make an entry like this. I'm not one of the most widely read on Wattpad, I'm not famous either, much less have I managed to publish any of my stories there with a publisher. However, I have tried a few things that worked for me, and friends have given me some advice as well.

1. Have a calendar: It's the most reliable, and one of the problems of Medicus. A few days ago I read "imagine that the producers of your favorite series decide to release episodes when they remember". Obviously I'm going to lose all interest, plus I forget the details. A good way to get started on Wattpad is to know how often you can post, and stick to that schedule. They say there that 2 or 3 times a week is ideal.

2. Publish when you're done with the book: This was a solution to that problem. I wrote Reflejos entirely before I first uploaded it to Wattpad. Every day there was something new, and for almost two months I was constantly posting on social media. There are even authors who upload the entire novel in one day, which I haven't tried (for now).

3. Have more than one story at a time: This was told to me by a friend that worked for her and it makes a lot of sense. You look more active, more productive, and people notice you much more. You also cover a wider range of readers, and those of one story may be interested in the other, and vice versa. It's something I'm definitely going to try.

4. Multimedia content: Something that characterizes Wattpad is that you can share images, songs, videos, anything that supports the storytelling. I've done it with several of my stories, looking for a soundtrack and referential images that attract attention, and it works very well. Someone once told me "I loved the story, the music (all my style, finally!)" in Alterno Nerva. It's my favorite comment ever!

5. Participate in challenges and contests: Rojo Carmín, Criptam, Los Colores de la Muerte, and Ars Viatoris were born that way. It's an amazing creativity exercise! In addition to getting you out of your comfort zone, it helps with visibility.

6. Read stories there: Another one of my problems, because I have a hard time reading stories that are not finished, but it's obvious: nobody likes a narcissistic hermit. However, I love what Lucía Arca, Sofía Olguín, León Küdell, y Natalia Hatt write. I recommend them with closed eyes.

Desde hace tiempo empecé a leer bastante poesía. No me pregunten por qué, desde cuándo, pero de un día a otro quise leer más y más, pero nada me gustaba. De hecho, le dije a una librera que estaba odiando todos los poemarios que estaba leyendo. Fue hasta que leí the Chaos inside Me, por Elisabet Salas, que sentí que estaba en la dirección correcta.

the Chaos inside Me, es un viaje de autodescubrimiento. Es una historia sobre ser dueño de las emociones que viven dentro del corazón y la cabeza. Es la experiencia catártica del dolor y la pérdida, pero también los sentimientos agridulces de alegría y la complejidad de la belleza.

Elisabet expresa el desmoronamiento de sí misma y la complejidad de las emociones que surgieron de la angustia, su propia salud mental y las luchas de crecer y entrar en un mundo sin precedentes para un niño de primera generación. Esta es la acumulación de tres años de lágrimas y largas noches descubriendo que el caos no siempre es algo malo.

Lo que más me gustó de este libro fue la facilidad con la que se lee. No es rebuscado, no es exagerado, no busca crear tormentas en donde hay algo pequeño, sino que explora cada faceta de la salud mental con la magnitud que se merece. Hay momentos fuertes, hay frases que te hacen tomar pausa, y hay otras que son más pasajeras.

Una particularidad que no me esperaba es que hay frases en español en algunos poemas. Nada muy elaborado, son frases que cualquiera entendería (creo yo, tengo que preguntarle a algún americano). Junto con la salud mental, el despecho, la soledad, la depresión, también está el tema de la identidad cultural. Tanto la celebración de sus orígenes como la desconexión que siente a veces, Elisabet Salas derrocha honestidad.

Ahora, por irónico que suene, es un poemario que me cuesta recordar. Lo disfruté muchísimo, me gustó al momento de leerlo, y me da curiosidad leer algo más de la autora, pero tengo una imagen general de su contenido. No es una lectura que pueda recordar con claridad, así que ya allí tengo un problema y no es por solo no leer poesía my seguido. Hay libros fuera de mis géneros que me han impacto. Este simplemente no fue uno de ellos.

En líneas generales, the Chaos inside Me es una lectura suave, perfecta para familiarizarse con la poesía moderna y que no se siente pesado en ningún momento. Además de entretenido, derrocha honestidad y cercanía, pero dista de ser memorable. Se los recomendaría si quieren leer algo con mucho drama pero que no los abrume, fácil de digerir en poco tiempo.

the Chaos inside Me, is a journey of self discovery. It is a story about owning the emotions that live inside the heart and the head. It is the cathartic experience of pain and loss but also the bittersweet feelings of joy and the complexity of beauty.

Elisabet expresses the unraveling of herself and the complexity of emotions that stemmed from heartache, her own mental health and the struggles of growing up and into a world with no precedence for a first generation child. This is the accumulation of three years of tears and long nights figuring out that chaos isn't always a bad thing.

What I liked the most about this book was the ease with which it reads. It's not fancy, it's not exaggerated, it doesn't seek to create storms where there is something small, but instead explores every facet of mental health with the magnitude it deserves. There are strong moments, there are phrases that make you pause, and there are others that are more fleeting.

A peculiarity that I did not expect is that there are phrases in Spanish in some poems. Nothing very elaborate, they are phrases that anyone would understand (I think, I have to ask an American). Along with mental health, heartache, loneliness, depression, there's also the issue of cultural identity. Both celebrating her origins and the disconnection she sometimes feels, Elisabet Salas exudes honesty.

Now, as ironic as it sounds, it's a collection of poems that I find difficult to remember. I enjoyed it very much, I liked it at the moment of reading it, and I'm interested in reading more from the author, but I have a general image of its content. It's not a reading that I can remember clearly, so I already have a problem there and it's not just because I don't read poetry often. There are books outside of my genres that have impacted me. This just was not one of them.

Overall, the Chaos inside Me is a smooth read, perfect for familiarizing yourself with modern poetry and never feels heavy. In addition to being entertaining, it exudes honesty and closeness, but it is far from memorable. I would recommend it if you want to read something with a lot of drama but not overwhelming, easy to digest in a short time.

¿Bullying por Escribir? / Bullying for Being a Writer?

Escribir es un oficio menospreciado, mal entendido, y muy mal pagado. Los escritores a veces tenemos que hacer de tripas corazón para que el día a día no acabe con nosotros, y es porque razones no nos faltan. Las críticas, la atención, las ventas, los recursos, el proceso de edición, de publicidad, las convocatorias... Y la lista sigue y sigue. A veces incluso hay casos de bullying.

He leído en algunas cuentas que varias personas se sienten mal porque los demás no les respetan cuando dicen que son escritores. Pareciera que esto es fácil, que el esfuerzo es mínimo, y que cualquier puede hacerlo. No, no, y definitivamente no. Más de un libro horroroso he visto por allí, porque de gustos y colores no han escrito los autores (jeje, lo siento), pero la calidad sí se nota.

En lo personal, no es algo que me haya pasado, pero cuando empecé más de uno en mi familia me miró raro, y muchos amigos simplemente me decían que estaba muy bien antes de cambiar de tema. Sí hubo algunas personas que se acercaron y me pidieron leer lo que yo hacía, cosa que significa mucho aún hoy en día, porque imagínense que te la pasas planeando, escribiendo, editando, haciendo la publicidad, y no te dicen nada o, peor, se burlan por ello.

Hubo alguien específicamente que me hizo sentir muy mal en su momento. Estábamos teniendo una discusión y esta persona me dijo algo tipo "te la pasas escribiendo que si pasó esto o lo otro y vino el hada". Esas últimas palabras no se me olvidan. Sé que no me entendía en ese momento, pero que viniera de alguien tan cercano hizo que doliera más aún. Me pasó también en el colegio, cuando alguien vio lo que estaba escribiendo y se rió.

¿A dónde voy con todo esto? Que los escritores somos personas, que tenemos sentimientos, y aunque en las redes parezca que lo disfrutamos muchísimo, a veces no es así. A veces nos toca tragar grueso, hacernos los fuertes, respirar hondo, lavarnos la cara luego de llorar un rato, y si la cabeza lo permite nos desquitamos con las letras. Seguimos escribiendo sin importar qué, yo lo he hecho por 10 años sin ver ninguna ganancia, pero no es fácil, y es una realidad de la que hay que hablar más seguido.

Writing is a job that's underestimated, misunderstood, and very poorly paid. We writers sometimes have to bite the bullet so that the day to day doesn't finish us, and it's because we're not lacking reasons. The reviews, the attention, the sales, the resources, the publishing process, the publicity, the calls... And the list goes on and on. Sometimes there are even cases of bullying.

I have read in some accounts that several people feel bad because others do not respect them when they say they are writers. It seems that this is easy, that the effort is minimal, and that anyone can do it. No, no, and definitely not. I have seen more than one horrible book out there, because about tastes, there's nothing written (hehe, sorry), but quality is noticeable.

Personally, it's not something that happened to me, but when I started, more than one in my family looked at me strangely, and many friends simply told me that it was okay before changing the subject. Yes, there were some people who approached me and asked me to read what I was doing, which means a lot even today, because imagine that you spend all your time planning, writing, editing, advertising, and they don't tell you anything or, worse, they make fun of you.

There was someone specifically who made me feel very bad at the time. We were having an argument and this person told me something like "you spend all your time writing that this or that happened and the fairy came." Those last words I can't forget. I know they didn't understand me at the time, but for it to come from someone so close made it hurt even more. It also happened to me at school, when someone saw what I was writing and laughed.

Where am I going with all this? That writers are people, that we have feelings, and although on social media it seems that we enjoy it very much, sometimes it is not so. Sometimes we have to swallow hard, pretend to be strong, take a deep breath, wash our faces after crying for a while, and if our heads allow it, we take it out on the letters. We keep writing no matter what, I've been doing it for 10 years without seeing any profit, but it's not easy, and it's a reality that needs to be talked about more often.

Es en serio cuando digo que escucho música rara. Hace días hablé con una amiga y me dio la idea de hacer una lista de 3 novelas mías con una canción que las represente. Me gustó tanto que decidí hacerlo con prácticamente todos mis libros. Jeje. Hay metal, pop, remixes, Nightcore, y hasta una canción de Shakira. ¡Disfruten!

Me daba bastante curiosidad saber cómo podría seguir la historia de Érica porque el volúmen 3 se sintió bastante sólido. Funcionaba muy bien, así que seguir con la serie era un riesgo alto. Sin embargo, el equipo sabe lo que hace. Hay un elenco nuevo, más intriga, una buena dosis de acción y drama, junto con una protagonista más madura.

Se trata de un libro que no se apoya tanto en la sangre y lo grotesco, sino en la tensión, la generación de expectativas, y el ritmo que va aumentando conforme avanzas. El arte se mantiene a la altura, jugando con tonos, sombras, a la vez que refleja las emociones de los personas. El final fue mi parte favorita por lo cinematográfico que se sintió.

Con lo que sí tuve problemas fue con el inicio. Me costó entender qué estaba pasando, y admito que de haber leído los números sueltos puede que no me hubiese convencido del todo, pero la idea es atrapante una vez que le das la oportunidad. Sin embargo, tuve que presionarme más de lo normal para seguir por lo pesada que se me hacía la lectura.

En general, es una lectura que se disfruta a medida que avanzas. Si bien el inicio me pareció cuestionable por el ritmo que manejó, el nuevo arco es prometedor, con un final que te deja con ganas de más y los niveles de curiosidad disparados. Something is Killing the Children Vol. 5 marca un nuevo capítulo en esta serie que no quiero perderme.

Collecting Something is Killing the Children #21-25.

I was quite curious how Erica's story could continue because volume 3 felt pretty solid. It worked very well, so continuing with the series was a high risk. However, the team knows what it is doing. There's a new cast, more intrigue, a healthy dose of action and drama, along with a more mature leading lady.

This is a book that relies not so much on gore and the grotesque, but on tension, the generation of expectations, and the pace that increases as you go along. The art keeps up, playing with tones, shadows, while reflecting people's emotions. The ending was my favorite part because of how cinematic it felt.

What I did have problems with was the start. It was hard for me to understand what was going on, and I admit that if I had read the individual issues I might not have been completely convinced, but the idea is captivating once you give it the chance. However, I had to push myself harder than usual to keep going because of how heavy the reading was for me.

Overall, it's an enjoyable read as you go along. Although the beginning seemed questionable to me due to the pace it managed, the new arc is promising, with an ending that leaves you wanting more and the levels of curiosity skyrocketed. Something is Killing the Children Vol. 5 marks a new chapter in this series that I don't want to miss.

Me enteré con apenas tiempo de esta iniciativa, así que me puse a escribir tan pronto como pude. Entre tantas ideas que tenía, con los recuerdos de Broadway todavía frescos en la memoria, me dejé llevar por la música de la noche. Así fue cómo nació mi relato La Máscara, una historia que transcurre en un club nocturno y un ángel que hechiza con su voz.

Poder ver El Fantasma de la Ópera fue una experiencia mágica que atesoraré por siempre. Aunque he sido honesto con respecto a mi opinión de la novela original, eso no me ha impedido disfrutar de la idea y una adaptación en cómic. Cuando me senté a escribir, la música de Andrew Lloyd Webber seguía dándome vueltas en la cabeza.

El elemento más emblemático de carnaval para mí han sido las máscaras, y el fantasma de Leroux usa una para ocultarse, la usa por vergüenza. De repente me pregunté cómo sería algo así en un contexto actual. ¿Y si en vez de ópera fuese música electrónica? ¿Y si los colores fuesen de neón? ¿Y si todos usaran máscaras para bailar, ser libres, pero alguien la usara para ocultar otra, una invisible? Y me puse a escribir.

Estoy feliz con el resultado, me sentí inspirado como no lo había estado hace tiempo, y me atreví a probar algo diferente en ese relato. Admito que solo conozco a Jonaira Campagnuolo de entre mis co-autores en este volúmen, pero estoy emocionado por leer a los demás, junto con los volúmenes uno y dos de la misma antología.

Publicar esta antología no fue tan sencillo como mis demás libros. Tuve que enviar varios correos a Amazon para confirmar que tengo los derechos necesarios, para confirmar mi identidad, hasta que finalmente me dieron el visto bueno para la tapa blanda. Sigo esperando para que esté en digital, ¡pero confío en que será pronto!

Hello hello, beautiful people. I come with good news. Last week was too intense. You can't imagine how much. However, in the midst of all the disaster I was able to publish my copy of Detrás del disfraz: Volúmen 3 (Behind the Costume: Volume 3), an anthology edited by Tinta Venezolana in collaboration with Tertulia de Letras y Escritores. I found out about this initiative with little time, so I started writing as soon as I could. Among so many ideas that I had, with the memories of Broadway still fresh in my mind, I let myself be carried away by the music of the night. This is how my story La Máscara (The Mask) was born, a story that takes place in a nightclub and an angel who enchants with his voice.

Being able to see The Phantom of the Opera was a magical experience that I will treasure forever. While I've been honest about my opinion of the original novel, that hasn't stopped me from enjoying the idea and a comic book adaptation. When I sat down to write, Andrew Lloyd Webber's music kept spinning in my head.

The most emblematic element of carnival for me have been the masks, and Leroux's phantom uses one to hide, he uses it out of shame. I suddenly wondered what something like that would be like in a current context. What if instead of opera it was electronic music? What if the colors were neon? What if everyone wore masks to dance, to be free, but someone wore it to hide another, an invisible one? And I started to write.

I'm happy with the result, I felt inspired like I hadn't been in a while, and I dared to try something different in this story. I admit that I only know Jonaira Campagnuolo among my co-authors in this volume, but I'm excited to read the others, along with volumes one and two of the same anthology.

Publishing this anthology was not as easy as my other books. I had to send several emails to Amazon to confirm that I have the necessary rights, to confirm my identity, until they finally gave me the go-ahead for the paperback. I'm still waiting for it to go digital, but I'm confident it will be soon!

Pero Tiến aún disfruta leer sus historias favoritas con sus padres de los libros que toma prestados de la biblioteca local. Ya es bastante difícil tratar de comunicarse con tus padres cuando eres niño, pero para Tiến, ni siquiera tiene las palabras correctas porque sus padres tienen dificultades con el inglés. ¿Hay una palabra vietnamita para lo que le está pasando?

Una historia bellamente ilustrada por Trung Le Nguyen que sigue a un niño mientras intenta navegar por la vida a través de cuentos de hadas, un clásico instantáneo que nos muestra cómo todos estamos conectados. The Magic Fish aborda temas difíciles de una manera accesible para lectores de todas las edades y nos enseña que, pase lo que pase, todos podemos tener nuestros propios finales felices.

Tengo que empezar diciendo que esta no es solo una historia, sino varias que se van entrelazando de una manera preciosa. Se complementan una a la otra aportándole mayor profundidad a la narración principal. Aunque me cuesta seguir leyendo historias con este estilo, The Magic Fish fue la excepción a la regla luego de las primeras páginas.

Trung Le Nguyen tiene buena mano también para las ilustraciones. Desarrolló un código gráfico para que el efecto sea aún mejor, además que su estilo de dibujo es adorable. Sin embargo, esto no significa que no haya peso o drama. A medida que la historia avanzaba se me hacía imposible imaginar qué podría pasar, contuve el aliento, y quise esperar lo mejor.

Solo puedo decir que el final me dejó sin palabras. Las líneas de tiempo que se manejan llegaron a su punto cúspide, se combinaron mejor que antes, volviendo la lectura cada vez más adictiva, hasta esa última página y esos últimos diálogos que te roban el aliento. Es el tipo de cierre que te deja pensando, imaginando tantos escenarios posibles, pero tan sólido que funciona a la perfección.

The Magic Fish es de esos libros que te cambian la vida. Hay un antes y un después de leerlo, el mundo se ve diferente por un momento, ves las cosas desde otro punto de vista, y aunque la realidad no cambia, se siente que has despertado de un sueño que quieres compartir con los demás. Obvio que quiero que lo lean, obvio que quiero que les encante, y obvio que voy a leer a Trung Le Nguyen  una vez más.

Has it happened to you that a book changes your life? It did to me. This one in particular. I devoured it from cover to cover, beginning to end, without taking pauses other than to sleep, and I could read it again without problems to experience it again. This is The Magic Fish, by Trung Le Nguyen.

Real life isn't a fairytale.

But Tiến still enjoys reading his favorite stories with his parents from the books he borrows from the local library. It's hard enough trying to communicate with your parents as a kid, but for Tiến, he doesn't even have the right words because his parents are struggling with their English. Is there a Vietnamese word for what he's going through?

Is there a way to tell them he's gay?

A beautifully illustrated story by Trung Le Nguyen that follows a young boy as he tries to navigate life through fairytales, an instant classic that shows us how we are all connected. The Magic Fish tackles tough subjects in a way that accessible with readers of all ages, and teaches us that no matter what--we can all have our own happy endings.

I have to start by saying that this is not just one story, but several that are intertwined in a beautiful way. They complement each other by adding more depth to the main narrative. Although I find it hard to continue reading stories in this style, The Magic Fish was the exception to the rule after the first few pages.

Trung Le Nguyen also has a good hand for illustrations. He developed a graphic code to make the effect even better, plus his drawing style is adorable. However, this doesn't mean that there's no weight or drama. As the story progressed it became impossible for me to imagine what could happen, I held my breath, and wanted to hope for the best.

I can only say that the ending left me speechless. The time lines that are handled reached their peak, they combined better than before, making the reading more and more addictive, until that last page and those last dialogues that steal your breath. It's the kind of closure that leaves you thinking, imagining so many possible scenarios, but so solid that it works perfectly.

The Magic Fish is one of those books that change your life. There's a before and after reading, the world looks different for a moment, you see things from another point of view, and although reality does not change, it feels like you have woken up from a dream that you want to share with others. Obviously I want you to read it, obviously I want you to love it, and obviously I'm going to read Trung Le Nguyen one more time.

Censuran a Roald Dahl / Roald Dahl Censored

Hace poco vi algo preocupante. Están censurando los libros de Roald Dahl, el autor de Matilda, Charlie y al fábrica de chocolate, James y el melocotón gigante, entre otros. Puffin Books y Roald Dahl Story Company, que cuenta con los derechos, formaron una alianza con Inclusive Minds para reescribir los libros para hacerlos más "aceptables", actuales, eliminar los estereotipos, e introducir ideas feministas.

La web 20 minutos compartió algunos de los cambios:

El editor de sus libros y Roald Dahl Story Company, propietaria de los derechos de su obra, se unieron a Inclusive Minds, un colectivo que trabaja para que la literatura infantil sea más inclusiva y accesible, para reescribir los libros. De esta forma, en Charlie y la fábrica de chocolate uno de los personajes que originalmente Dahl describió como "gordo", ahora es "enorme"; y también se han eliminado adjetivos como "feo".

En otro de sus libros, Las brujas, el personaje principal dice que tirará del pelo a las mujeres para saber si llevan pelucas porque son brujas, a lo que su abuela le responde "no puedes andar tirando del cabello de cada dama que conoces". Ahora, esta dice "hay muchas otras razones por las que las mujeres pueden usar pelucas y ciertamente no hay nada de malo en eso".

Muchos se han opuesto a esto, y me encantan las palabras de Suzanne Nossel, directora ejecutiva de PEN America, una organización sin fines de lucro que trabaja para defender y celebrar la libre expresión en los Estados Unidos y a nivel mundial a través de los avances de la literatura y los derechos humanos: "Mejor que jugar con estos textos sería ofrecer un contexto introductorio que prepare a las personas para lo que están por leer, y les ayude a entender el entorno en el cual fue escrito."

También aplaudo las palabras de la traductora y comentarista francesa Bérengère Viennot, “una novela de Roald Dahl reescrita ya no es una novela de Roald Dahl (...). No engañan a nadie, esto es censura disfrazada de actualización”. También calificó las modificaciones de “inaceptables a varios niveles”. Además, varias editoriales aseguraron que no van a publicar estas ediciones.

Entiendo las intenciones que llevan a esto. Obvio que los padres no quieren que sus hijos crezcan creyendo que ser gordo es malo, que quieren enseñarles el respeto a las mujeres, pero esto es estúpido. Es una decisión desmedida, ilógica, y que busca generar polémica.

Como autor, siempre busco respetar tanto como pueda y me cuido de caer en estereotipos o ideas dañinas. Es difícil, pero no imposible. Sin embargo, es muy probable que más adelante algunas ideas pasen a ser ofensivas. ¿Significa eso que debo reescribir todos mis libros o que alguien lo haga por mí? No.

Mis historias son mías, son un reflejo de lo que soy hoy en día, de la vida que llevo, del mundo en el que me encuentro. Son el resultado del momento en que fueron escritas, no un producto para agradarle a todos. Todos los libros lo son, y nombres como el de Roald Dahl merecen mucho más respeto.

I recently saw something disturbing. They're censoring Roald Dahl's books, the author of Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, among others. Puffin Books and the Roald Dahl Story Company, which holds the rights, formed an alliance with Inclusive Minds to rewrite the books to make them more "acceptable," current, remove stereotypes, and introduce feminist ideas.

Some changes have been shared already in Twitter:

Many have opposed this, and I love the words of Suzanne Nossel, CEO of PEN America, a nonprofit organization that works to defend and celebrate free expression in the United States and worldwide through the advancement of literature and human rights: "Better than playing around with these texts is to offer introductory context that prepares people for what they are about to read, and helps them understand the setting in which it was written."

I also applaud the words of the French translator and commentator Bérengère Viennot, “a rewritten Roald Dahl novel is no longer a Roald Dahl novel (...). They're not fooling anybody, this is censorship disguised as an update." She also called the changes "unacceptable on several levels." In addition, Spanish and French publisher assured that they will not publish these editions.

I understand the intentions that lead to this. Obviously parents don't want their children to grow up believing that being fat is bad, that they want to teach them  to respect in women, but this is stupid. It's an excessive, illogical decision, and one that seeks to generate controversy.

As an author, I always seek to respect as much as I can and take care not to fall into stereotypes or harmful ideas. It's difficult but not impossible. However, it's very likely that some ideas will later become offensive. Does that mean I have to rewrite all my books or have someone do it for me? No.

My stories are mine, they are a reflection of who I am today, of the life I lead, of the world in which I find myself. They are the result of the moment they were written in, not a product to please everyone. All books are, and names like Roald Dahl's deserve much more respect.

Hace poco me reconcilié con el shonen. He tenido una relación frustrante tras la cual decidí enfocarme más en el seinen, historias más adultas y sin esos clichés que odio. Sin embargo, encontré una serie que me encantó y me tuvo enganchado leyendo de principio a fin: Sengoku Youko, Volume 1, por Satoshi Mizukami. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia a cambio de una reseña honesta!

El mundo está dividido en dos facciones: humanos y monstruos llamados katawara. A pesar de ser una katawara, Tama ama a los humanos y promete protegerlos del mal, incluso si eso significa luchar contra los de su propia especie. Su hermanastro Jinka, sin embargo, odia a los humanos, a pesar de que en su mayoría es uno. A los hermanos se une un espadachín cobarde llamado Shinsuke, que quiere aprender a volverse fuerte.

¡Las personas que conozcan, los lugares que vean y las criaturas con las que luchen serán legendarios!

Tengo que empezar diciendo que este un shonen diferente. No hay un protagonista débil que lucha desesperadamente por volverse poderoso. Aquí los dos hermanos son de temer porque, si bien Jinka es el que se encarga de las peleas en todo el tomo, es obvio que Tama no se quedará atrás. Lo mismo pasa con los compañeros con los que se topan.

Al principio no había una historia como tal, sentí que sería una especie de aventuras auto conclusivas o que no llevarían a un punto específico. Luego me llevo la sorpresa cuando esta aparece, ¡y de qué manera! Literalmente me quedé pegado a la pantalla leyendo sin parar, con muchas más ganas y más emocionado, hasta que llegué el final.

El arte tampoco se queda atrás. Destacan los diseños de los personajes, de los monstruos, y la atmósfera de diversas escenas. La estética cruda y poco cuidada va muy de la mano con esta historia, haciendo la experiencia más envolvente de lo que uno esperaría al principio. ¡Todo muy bien cuidado y con un excelente resultado!

Me quedé con ganas de saber más sobre Jinka y Tama, un poco más de desarrollo sobre ellos como personajes, y quedé súper intrigado con el tema de los experimentos, así que estaré esperando el próximo volumen con muchas ganas. Sengoku Youko, Volume 1 te atrapa en el momento ideal para no dejarte escapar, igual de implacable que su chico principal.

I recently reconciled with shonen. I've had a frustrating relationship after which I decided to focus more on seinen, more adult stories and without those clichés that I hate. However, I found a series that I loved and kept me reading from beginning to end: Sengoku Youko, Volume 1, by Satoshi Mizukami. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

The world is divided into two factions: humans and monsters called katawara. Despite being a katawara, Tama loves humans and vows to protect them from evil, even if it means fighting her own kind. Her stepbrother Jinka, however, hates humans, despite mostly being one. The siblings are joined by a cowardly swordsman named Shinsuke, who wants to learn how to become strong. 

The people they meet, places they see, and creatures they battle will be legendary!

I have to start by saying that this is a different shonen. There's no weak protagonist desperately struggling to become powerful. Here the two siblings are to be feared because, although Jinka is the one in charge of the fights throughout the volume, it's obvious that Tama will not be left behind. The same goes for the companions they run into.

At the beginning there wasn't a story as such, I felt that it would be a kind of self-contained adventures or that they would not lead to a specific point. Then it surprises me when it appears, and in what way! I literally stayed glued to the screen reading without stopping, with much more desire and more excitement, until I reached the end.

Art is not far behind either. The designs of the characters, the monsters, and the atmosphere of various scenes stand out. The raw and careless aesthetic goes very hand in hand with this story, making the experience more immersive than one would expect at first. Everything very well cared for and with an excellent result!

I was left wanting to know more about Jinka and Tama, a little more development on them as characters, and I was super intrigued with the subject of experiments, so I'll be looking forward to the next volume. Sengoku Youko, Volume 1 catches you at the ideal moment to not let you escape, just as relentless as his main guy.
