Narnia #5: La Travesía del Viajero del Alba / The Voyage of the Dawn Trader

English below

Good morning, Nighters! How are you today? I’m still reading and going crazy, with nothing better to do. Seriously, I’m about to bite the walls, just to change the routine. Today I come to tell you about the fifth book in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Trader, by C. S. Lewis, one which left me many teachings.

  • Publication: 1952
  • Author: C. S. Lewis
  • Illustrator: Pauline Baynes
  • Book series: The Chronicles of Narnia #5
  • Pages: 140 pages
  • Genres: Children, Fantasy, Adventure.

The protagonists, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their cousin Eustace Scrubb, arrive to Narnia to take part with the now King Caspian X, who’s willing to reach the world’s end to get the answers he’s searching. What they don’t know is that in this travel they’ll discover more about themselves than about Narnia.

This book’s idea is a bit strange since we don’t get the battle between good and evil that was always there in the previous stories. The Voyage of the Dawn Trader is a novel more focused on adventure, discoveries and many, many messages for the little ones, even for the adults.

I’d say this was the series’ slowest book, but precisely because it breaks all the structure I was used to as a reader, but it is by far the most interesting one as well. C. S. Lewis took care to keep me attentive to every discovery, every end that was tied and adventure the characters lived. I could say is also the less religious one in the series, aiming more in a spiritual or moralist direction.

Every isle Caspian and his friends discover leaves a valuable lesson, my favorite one being that of the Dark Isle, that teaches how some battles are not won by strength or persistence, but with hope. It’s of those stories perfect to read to kids and ask about their opinion.

I believe that The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Trader, by C. S. Lewis, would be the only book I would reread of the whole saga. I really enjoyed it and time passed me by. I didn’t realize that I had finished it until I had, and it may have been even therapeutic. It made me look at things from another point of view.

¡Un saludo y un abrazo!
Greetings and hugs!
