Hubo un tiempo en que leía la saga Villanos de Serena Valentino, pero ya no más. ¿Por qué? Porque vi un tweet del que no pude olvidarme y que implicaba muchas cosas. Ha sido bastante difícil, pero ya no siento que pueda disfrutar de esa saga.
Hace tiempo, vi un tweet en donde Serena explicaba que no planeaba incluir a Morgana, Jafar, Scar, o el Dr. Facilier en su saga. Entiendo el no incluir a Morgana porque no es parte del canon de Disney, pero dejar a los otros tres por fuera implica algo mucho más importante.
Jafar es árabe, Scar es africano, y el Dr. Facilier es afroamericano. Cada uno representa una cultura diferente, un grupo social diferente, que casi siempre han sido vistos como minorías, con derechos limitados, y cuya representación es cada vez más importante. El no incluirlos me empezó a molestar cada vez más.
Serena explicó que solo porque le gustaría escribir una historia sobre Facilier no significa que debería, y entiendo que hay un sentimiento noble detrás de ello, pero esto implica que entonces solo habrá villanos blancos y europeos en su saga. Hasta ahora, están la Reina Grimhilde, la Bestia, Úrsula, Maléfica, Madre Gothel, las Hermanas Perversas, Cruella de Vil, Lady Tremaine, Capitán Garfio, y Hades.
Villanos es una saga hermosa, me encanta que incluya temas como la salud mental, feminismo, familias disfuncionales, prejuicio, maltrato, abuso, y más. Sin embargo, saber que será una saga de solo personajes blancos es desalentador, más aún después de que la autora escribió Raising the Horseman, un retelling lésbico interracial de Sleepy Hollow.
Disfruté y crecí bastante con esta saga, me hizo soñar y recuperar ese niño interno del que a veces me olvido, pero ese niño está herido porque no verá su cultura y el villano del que se quería disfrazar. Es difícil, y duele, mucho, pero es la decisión correcta para mí, porque dolió mucho soñar despierto con que Jafar fuese el siguiente solo para darme cuenta de que nunca estaría allí junto con otros villanos icónicos solo porque no son blancos.
There was a time when I read Serena Valentino's Villains saga, but not anymore. Why? Because I saw a tweet that I couldn't forget about and it implied a lot of things. It's been quite difficult, but I don't feel like I can enjoy that saga anymore.
A while back, I saw a tweet where Serena explained that she didn't plan on including Morgana, Jafar, Scar, or Dr. Facilier in her saga. I understand not including Morgana because she is not part of the Disney canon, but leaving the other three out implies something much more important.

Not including them began to annoy me more and more.
Serena explained that just because she would like to write a story about Facilier doesn't mean she should, and I understand there's a noble sentiment behind it, but it does imply that then there will only be white and European villains in her saga. So far, there's Queen Grimhilde, the Beast, Ursula, Maleficent, Mother Gothel, the Odd Sisters, Cruella de Vil, Lady Tremaine, Captain Hook, and Hades.
Villains is a beautiful saga, I love that it includes topics such as mental health, feminism, dysfunctional families, prejudice, mistreatment, abuse, and more. However, knowing that it will be an all-white saga is daunting, even more so after the author wrote Raising the Horseman, an interracial lesbian retelling of Sleepy Hollow.
I enjoyed and grew a lot with this saga, it made me dream and recover that inner child that I sometimes forget about, but that child is hurt because he will not see his culture and the villain he wanted to dress up as. It's hard, and it hurts, a lot, but it's the right decision for me, because it hurt a lot to daydream about Jafar being the next one just to realize he would never be there along with many iconic villains just because they are not white.
