Create a Timeline / Crear una Línea de tiempo

Hello guys, how is this week going on?

I started doing something a couple of weeks ago and think some of you may make a good use of it, in case you write or would like to write in the future. Is about creating a timeline for your story.

Writting freely may have its advantages, like going on your own pace, have complete freedom and be able to play as much as you want, but you can also leave many holes in the plot, let unfinished scenes, have problems trying to continue and have a writer’s block.

Creating a timeline has helped me to be more solid on my ideas, prevent me from having any kind of block, and, yes, I cannot be as creative as before, but it’s just  matter of practice, as it is becoming easier with each time I work this way.

How can you do so? What works for me is to imagine the end. Sofía Olguín, a writer friend, once said that she couldnt start writing if she didn’t have the final of the book, and I started doing it. Where should the characters be at that point? Happily ever after or completely destroyed? It has helped me to know what was their future like.

From there, I just need to build the skeleton of their adventure, a simple and general list with the most basic things. Each chapter needs to fill a line, not more than that, but always leaving empty spaces for me to fill when properly working on the book.

Think on writing as an adventue, which is not so far from being one, and your timeline like the map you have. Because of this, we won’t always follow it as it is seen, as we always discover new routes, new paths and alterntives, making us change the road.

Hola chicos, ¿cómo va esta semana?
Empecé a hacer algo hace un par de semanas y creo que algunos de ustedes pueden hacer un buen uso de ello, en caso de que escriban o les gustaría escribir en el futuro. Se trata de crear una línea de tiempo para sus historias.
Escribir libremente puede tener sus ventajas, como ir a nuestro propio ritmo, tener total libertad y ser capaz de jugar tanto como deseemos, pero también puede dejar muchos agujeros en la trama, dejar escenas inacabadas, tener problemas para intentar continuar y tener un bloqueo de escritor.

Crear una línea de tiempo me ha ayudado a ser más sólido en mis ideas, me impide tener cualquier tipo de bloqueo, y, sí, no puedo ser tan creativo como antes, pero es cuestión de práctica, ya que es cada vez más fácil trabajar de esta manera.
¿Cómo pueden hacerlo? Lo que funciona para mí es imaginar el final. Sofía Olguín, una amiga escritora, una vez dijo que no podía empezar a escribir si no tenía el final del libro, y empecé a hacerlo. ¿Dónde deben estar los personajes en ese punto? ¿Felices por siempre o completamente destruidos? Me ha ayudado saber cómo será su futuro.
A partir de ahí, sólo necesito construir el esqueleto de su aventura, una lista simple y general con las cosas más básicas. Cada capítulo tiene que llenar una línea, no más que eso, pero siempre dejando espacios vacíos para y llenarlos cuando trabaje completamente en el libro.
Piensen en la escritura como una aventura, que no está tan lejos de serlo, y su línea de tiempo como el mapa que tienen. Por eso, no siempre lo seguiremos tal y como se ve, ya que siempre descubrimos nuevas rutas, nuevos caminos y alternativas, que nos hacen cambiar de rumbo.
