Hoy volvemos con las reseñas, y quería volver por un momento a los romances del bachillerato. Son historias de las que no me canso, pero es muchísimo mejor cuando tienen un elemento novedoso. Ese fue el caso cuando leí If It’s You, I Might Try Falling in Love, Vol. 1, por Maru Kubota y traducido por Avery Hutley. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Cuando has pasado toda tu vida ocultando la parte de ti capaz de amar, es aterrador cuando el amor te encuentra. Todos le habían demostrado a Amane que ser gay era suficiente para alejar a quienes le importaban, hasta que se mudó a Enoshima y conoció a Ryuuji, quien era todo lo que los demás no eran. Amane no necesita esconderse cuando están juntos, y sus sentimientos rápidamente superan el velo tras el que los había ocultado con seguridad durante tanto tiempo. Pero ahora, Amane debe enfrentarse a algo aún más aterrador: la esperanza de que este amor pueda ser real...

Esta es otra historia preciosa que habla sobre las heridas emocionales del pasado, de cómo la sociedad puede condicionar a alguien a tener comportamientos autodestructivos, y cómo las personas indicadas pueden revertir el efecto. No se trata de un mesianismo ridículo ni de ser el santo remedio para los problemas. Se trata de sentir algo genuino, algo por lo que enfrentar el miedo a salir lastimado.

Mi parte favorita es que Ryuuji parece ser autista. Lo enmascara muy bien, pero su forma de actuar, de hablar, e incluso su forma de sentir, lo van haciendo más obvio conforme avanzas en la lectura. Amane es un personaje que se gana el cariño en poco tiempo, especialmente por sus experiencias pasadas. Aunque el inicio se siente forzado durante el primer capítulo, pero tan pronto inicia el siguiente tood se vuelve mucho mejor. ¡La química es innegable entre estos dos!

El arte también ese precioso. Un estilo suave, limpio, y atmosférico llena las páginas de principio a fin, adaptándose a los diferentes tonos narrativos con naturalidad. Desde drama y memorias dolorosas hasta añoranza y humor, el arte te muestra a los personajes en sus puntos más altos y más bajos, especialmente cuando se trata de Amane.

Quedé con ganas de mucho más, y aunque el próximo volumen viene pronto, no puedo esperar a leer más sobre estos dos. Es un romance lento que promete muchísimo, un desarrollo de personaje excelente, junto con un arte que es poesía visual. If It’s You, I Might Try Falling in Love, Vol. 1 es el inicio sólido de la que parece ser una saga perfecta para los que buscan un romance de esos que llenan pero que también sanan.

When you’ve spent your entire life shrouding the part of yourself that’s capable of love, it’s terrifying when love finds you. Everyone had shown Amane that being gay was enough to push away those he cared about—until he moved to Enoshima and met Ryuuji, who was everything everyone else wasn’t. Amane doesn’t need to hide when they’re together, and his feelings quickly outgrow the veil he’d safely shoved them behind for so long. But now, Amane must reckon with something even scarier: the hope that this love could be real…

This is another beautiful story that talks about the emotional wounds of the past, how society can condition someone to engage in self-destructive behavior, and how the right people can reverse the effects. It's not about ridiculous messianicism or being a cure-all for problems. It's about feeling something genuine, something that makes you face the fear of getting hurt.

My favorite part is that Ryuuji seems to be autistic. He masks it very well, but his way of acting, speaking, and even his way of feeling, makes it more obvious as you read on. Amane is a character who quickly wins your affection, especially given his past experiences. Although the beginning feels forced during the first chapter, it gets much better as soon as the next chapter begins. The chemistry between these two is undeniable!

The art is also beautiful. A soft, clean, and atmospheric style fills the pages from beginning to end, adapting to the different narrative tones with ease. From drama and painful memories to longing and humor, the art shows you the characters at their highest and lowest points, especially when it comes to Amane.

I'm left wanting so much more, and although the next volume is coming soon, I can't wait to read more about these two. It's a slow-burn romance that promises so much, with excellent character development, along with art that is visual poetry. If It’s You, I Might Try Falling in Love, Vol. 1 is a solid start to what looks to be a perfect series for those looking for a romance that's both fulfilling and healing.
