Buenas buenas, ¿qué tal les va, nocturnos? Yo sigo en mi aventura, en mi búsqueda por ese 20 soñado (la calificación máxima para estudios en Venezuela, en caso de que se pregunten). Mientras, sigamos con los libros y las reseñas. Para hoy, les cuento sobre mi experiencia con The Garden of Bewitchment, de Catherine Cavendish. ¡Gracias por la copia, señores de la editorial!

Evelyn y Clare deciden dejar la casa en donde han vivido desde siempre para mudarse a una residencia más reservada en donde poder trabajar en su novela y llevar una vida más tranquila. Allí, conocen a Matthew Dixon, un amigable vecino que se muestra cercano, pero quien parece estar relacionado directamente con el juguete diabólico que las hermanas encuentran en su casa. La realidad se desdibuja con cada capítulo a medida que los personajes se adentran en el misterio que parece rodearlos a todos.
La idea de una novela gótica contemporánea me pareció muy atractiva, mucho más aún porque sus protagonistas son escritoras. No me pidan explicaciones, pero solo esto hace que The Garden of Bewitchment gane muchos puntos. Algo tienen los personajes escritores que me encantan, y sé que no soy el único. Que Evelyn, Clare, Matthew y los demás personajes estén tan bien estructurados son más puntos a favor.
Sin embargo, perdí el interés varias veces por el estilo de la autora. Catherine Cavendish se deja llevar por las florituras, los adornos, y a veces acelera los sucesos más de lo que debería. El ritmo también me dio problemas porque sentí que la historia iba por un lado y yo por el otro, aunque sí hubo escenas que disfruté de leer, casi todas relacionadas con la escritura de la novela en la que trabajaban las hermanas.
Lo que terminó por dejarme descolocado fue el final de The Garden of Bewitchment. Hay tantas cosas mezcladas que no terminé por entender el punto de la autora, lo cual puede que haya sido su objetivo desde el principio, un cierre borroso para que cada lector decidiera qué pasaba finalmente, pero no funcionó conmigo. Estaba tan confundido que no supe qué pensar. A pesar de ello, podría darle otra oportunidad a la autora en el futuro, y no negaré que fue una novela entretenida.

Evelyn and Clare decide to leave the house where they have always lived to move to a more reserved residence where they can work on their novel and lead a more peaceful life. There, they meet Matthew Dixon, a friendly neighbor who stays close to them, but who seems to be directly related to the devilish toy the sisters find in their house. Reality blurs with each chapter as the characters delve into the mystery that seems to surround them all.
The idea of a contemporary gothic novel seemed very attractive to me, much more so because its protagonists are writers. Don't ask me for explanations, but only this makes The Garden of Bewitchment earn many points. There's something about characters who write that I love, and I know I'm not the only one. That Evelyn, Clare, Matthew and the other characters are so well structured are more points in favor.
However, I lost interest several times because of the author's style. Catherine Cavendish gets carried away by flourishes, embellishments, and sometimes hastens events more than she should. The rhythm also gave me problems because I felt that the story was going on one side and I on the other, although there were scenes that I enjoyed reading, almost all related to the writing of the novel in which the sisters worked.
What ended up leaving me out of place was the end of The Garden of Bewitchment. There are so many things mixed up that I didn't end understanding the author's point, which may have been her goal from the beginning, a blurry closure for each reader to decide what was finally going to happen, but it didn't work for me. I was so confused that I didn't know what to think. Despite this, I could give the author another chance in the future, and I won't deny it was an entertaining novel.
