Reseña / Review: The Phlebotomist

War brought the Harvest. Willa Mae Wallace is a reaper.
To support herself and her grandson Isaiah, Willa works for the blood contractor Patriot. Instituted to support the war effort, the mandatory draw--The Harvest--has led to a society segregated by blood type. Hoping to put an end to it all, Willa draws on her decades-old phlebotomy training to resurrect an obsolete collection technique, but instead uncovers an awful truth.
Patriot will do anything to protect its secret. On the run and with nowhere else to turn, Willa seeks an alliance with Lock, a notorious blood-hacker who cheats the Harvest to support the children orphaned by it. But they soon find themselves in the grasp of a new type of evil.File Under: Science Fiction [ Blood Will Out | This Might Hurt a Bit | Be positive | Bloody Nightmare ]

At last! A novel with a female protagonist who's not a teenager. An older woman in the lead role! Thanks, Mr. Panatier! I was thrilled when I read that part of the synopsis, mostly because I knew this would be a much more adult story, perhaps not as action-packed as in YA novels, but with a cunning and mature protagonist.

I loved the author's style and the way he described the scenes. I admit that some of them confused me or made me slow down a bit because it's very inspired by medical thrillers, but the characters are as different as they are fascinating, and the plot unfolds very well. There were many twists and turns that left me speechless, and heaven knows there came a time when I couldn't stop reading.

My only complaint is the pre-climax scene, when it seems like all is lost and a stroke of luck saves the day. It all happened so out of nowhere, without any indication, and just when a miracle was needed, that it seemed like a very easy way out. It pulled me out of the reading on the spot, though I admit I really enjoyed what happened next. Hehehe. This novel brought out my sadistic side, and it will do the same with other readers.

Those who want a different dystopia, an engaging concept, and with scientific elements reminiscent of del Toro's and Hogan's The Strain, but considerably better, will fall in love with The Phlebotomist. Chris Panatier surprised me many times with this novel, reinventing one of the most beloved monsters in an unexpected way. Judging from a few loose threads, I'd say a second part would be great to explore this fascinating world in more depth.

Greetings and hugs!
