Comic: The Sandman Vol. 1 Nocturnes and Preludes

  • Autor: Neil Gaiman
  • Artistas: Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg and Malcolm Jones III
  • Saga: The Sandman Vol. 1
  • Páginas: 233 páginas
  • Géneros: Cómic, Horror, Fantasía
Vamos por el inicio: The Sandman Vol. 1: Nocturnes and Preludes.

Hello, Nighters. How is everything going there?
Months ago I set a goal: The Sandman, by Neil Gaiman. I wanted to read this saga that has given so much to talk about for so long, to know where all the respect that readers have for it came from, and after several numbers and some headaches, because not in vain they say it's an intellectuals' comic, I perfectly understand the reasons.
  • Publication: 1998
  • Author: Neil Gaiman
  • Artists: Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg and Malcolm Jones III
  • Series: The Sandman Vol. 1
  • Pages: 233 pages
  • Genres: Comic, Horror, Fantasy
Let's start from the beginning: The Sandman Vol. 1: Nocturnes and Preludes. This first volume tells us the story of Dream, King of the Dreaming, who's kidnapped by a group of mortals who practice Ceremonial High Magic. After several years in captivity, Dream manages to escape, but it's an escape far from being simple or without problems. The volume closes with the presentation of his sister, Death, who helps him make sense of many things after being away from the world.
Neil Gaiman said that the first issues of The Sandman are strange, and I understand what he means. The narration, although impeccable and very careful, feels erratic at times, although the quality of the content is top-notch, that's for sure.
When I started reading The Sandman Vol. 1: Nocturnes and Preludes, I didn't know what to expect, but I found a dark fantasy story full of irony and reflections on the fundamental concepts of life. Death, desire, ego, and many other questions say "present" in the first five chapters of this famous saga.
The last chapter, although still strange, has a more solid shape and sense. Neil Gaiman made me think a lot about death itself, how humans see it, and it's a subject that I would see repeated later, although in different ways.
Yes, I must say that I'm not a fan of art, even after reading several volumes. I love the covers of The Sandman, but the internal art doesn't really catch my attention. Maybe that's just what I could criticize of The Sandman Vol. 1: Nocturnes and Preludes, as in the following volumes; although it's not a flaw but a matter of taste.
If you can read these comics, do it. They has given me some headaches to understand this and that, but the way Neil Gaiman includes philosophical themes in a comic creates a very striking contrast, not to mention that it is very, very entertaining. Another point in favor are the covers, because yes, they are a work of art.

¡Un saludo y un abrazo!
Greetings and hugs!
