Manga: Koimonogatari Love Stories, Volume 1

Buenas buenas, ¿cómo va esa semana, Nocturnos?  Hoy vengo con un manga bastante particular, diferente a lo que suelo leer y que me puso a prueba. Pocas veces encuentro material que saque al editor en mí, o al menos a mi lado más analítico, y este lo hizo con facilidad. Se trata de Koimonogatari: Love Stories, Volume 1, por Tohru Tagura. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia a cambio de una reseña honesta!

Cuando Yuiji accidentalmente escucha a su compañero de clase Yamato confesarle a otra amiga que es gay, su perspectiva cambia. Al ver a Yamato bajo una nueva luz, Yuiji hace todo lo posible para no dejar que los prejuicios coloreen su punto de vista, pero todavía se encuentra pensando demasiado en las interacciones de sus compañeros de clase ahora. Se da cuenta especialmente de la forma en que Yamato mira a un chico en particular: el mejor amigo de Yuiji.

Aunque se dice a sí mismo que no debería involucrarse, Yuiji descubre que no puede evitarlo; ver el amor unilateral de Yamato lo atrae de una manera que nunca esperó. Al principio, es empatía, saber que el chico en el que Yamato tiene la mira es definitivamente heterosexual y no tiene idea. Pero a medida que su propia amistad con Yamato se desarrolla y los dos se acercan a través de un grupo de estudio mutuo, Yuiji llega a preocuparse verdaderamente por Yamato como persona, independientemente de su sexualidad. Solo quiere que Yamato sea feliz y pueda expresar su verdadero yo.

Como les comenté, la historia es muy diferente a lo que suelo leer porque no hay un drama explosivo o una trama impactante. Todo lo contrario. Es una historia muy suave, atmosférica, que te lleva de la mano para conocer a dos personajes que se parecen bastante. Koimonogatari: Love Stories, Volume 1 es una lectura calmada y que te pone a pensar mucho, más que todo en los sentimientos contradictorios de la adolescencia.

Tengo que decir desde ahora que no es una historia romántica. Yuiji y Yamato solo son amigos, aunque hay ciertas escenas que me ponen a pensar que en el próximo volúmen vendrá algo más allá de solo una amistad. Tohru Tagura tomó un alto riesgo con una historia muy adulta para adolesentes y muy juvenil para adultos, pero funciona muy bien.

Sí tengo que decir que por un momento sentí que la trama no avanzaba hacia ningún lugar. La amistad entre Yuiji y Yamato pareció llegar a un punto muerto a mitad de la lectura, sin pista alguna de que las cosas pudieran cambiar a mejor. No obstante, la historia evolucionó sin que me diera cuenta y los dejó en un punto mucho más cercano como amigos a como empezó todo.

Koimonogatari: Love Stories, Volume 1 es bastante rara, no me cansaré de decirlo, pero con un arte tan precioso, una atmósfera relajante y poética a partes iguales, y con un tacto suave para con lo que suele ser una pesadilla para muchos jóvenes LGBT+, es una lectura que se disfruta sin importar qué. Tohru Tagura hizo un buen trabajo, no tanto como pensé que sería porque la lectura me tomó muy por sorpresa, pero tengo buenas expectativas para el próximo volúmen.

Hello hello, how's that week going, Nightlies? Today I come with a very particular manga, different from what I usually read and that put me to the test. I rarely find material that brings out the editor in me, or at least my more analytical side, and this one did it with ease. It's about Koimonogatari: Love Stories, Volume 1, by Tohru Tagura. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

When Yuiji accidentally overhears his classmate Yamato confessing to another friend that he's gay, his perspective shifts. Seeing Yamato in a new light, Yuiji does his best not to let prejudice color his view, but he still finds himself overthinking his classmates' interactions now. He especially notices the way Yamato looks at one particular boy: Yuiji's own best friend.

Even though he tells himself he shouldn't get involved, Yuiji finds he just can't help it; watching Yamato's one-sided love draws him in a way he never expected. At first, it's empathy, knowing that the boy Yamato has his sights on is definitely straight and has no idea. But as his own friendship with Yamato develops and the two of them grow closer through a mutual study group, Yuiji comes to truly care about Yamato as a person, regardless of his sexuality. He only wants Yamato to be happy, and to be able to express his true self.

As I mentioned, the story is very different from what I usually read because there's no explosive drama or shocking plot. Quite the opposite. It's a very soft, atmospheric story that takes you by the hand to meet two characters who are quite alike. Koimonogatari: Love Stories, Volume 1 is a calm reading that makes you think a lot, mostly about the contradictory feelings of adolescence.

I have to say from now on that it is not a romantic story. Yuiji and Yamato are just friends, although there are certain scenes that make me think that in the next volume something beyond just friendship will come. Tohru Tagura took a high risk with a storyu that is very adult for teens and very youthful for adults, but it works very well.

I do have to say that for a moment I felt that the plot was going nowhere. The friendship between Yuiji and Yamato seemed to come to a standstill midway through the reading, with no clue that things might change for the better. However, the story evolved without my realizing it and left them much closer as friends than how it all began.

Koimonogatari: Love Stories, Volume 1 is quite weird, I won't tire of saying it, but with such gorgeous art, equal parts soothing and poetic atmosphere, and with a soft touch to what is often a nightmare for many LGBT + youth, it's a reading that is enjoyed no matter what. Tohru Tagura did a good job, not as much as I thought it would be because the reading took me very by surprise, but I have good expectations for the next volume.
