Hace poco leí un manga que me encantó. Presenta una realidad de la que no se escucha mucho, que es la vida diaria y los retos que enfrentan las parejas y matrimonios en Japón. Es irónico que haya tantas restricciones en un país donde el yaoi y BL son tan populares, pero siempre hay una salida. Como una pareja gay que vive en Japón (donde el matrimonio gay aún no es legal), Yuta y Kyota han encontrado un vacío legal único para que el gobierno reconozca su unión: Kyota adoptó a Yuta.

Este manga de no ficción describe cómo los dos hombres se conocieron y se enamoraron, su vida juntos durante los últimos veinte años, su lucha por comunicar su relación a sus familias, sus ansiedades sobre el futuro y su determinación de vivir felices y sin preocupaciones como cualquier otra pareja casada, mientras luchan por la independencia y la igualdad de derechos en un panorama cultural cambiante.

Por temas de cercanía geográfica, muchas de las noticias y contenido que leo son del continente americano. Pensé que Japón sería un país más progresivo con este tema, pero como bien lo muestra el manga, no es el caso. La historia deja ver lo difícil que es, el poco entendimiento que hay, y los retos que afrontan las parejas como Yuta y Kyota.

El arte se aleja muchísimo de lo que prefiero, así que me costó un poco simpatizar con los personajes, pero una vez que te acostumbras terminas por sumergirte por completo en la narración. El humor del guión se complementa con el arte al estilo chibi dando un excelente resultado. El tiempo se me pasó volando, tanto por lo entretenido como por lo educativo.

Diría que ese último es el aspecto que más me gusta del manga. No solo cuenta una historia, sino que incluye secciones en donde Yuta explica los métodos que usaron él y Kyota para vivir como una pareja casada. ¡Es más fascinante de lo que se imaginan! Te presenta la realidad de ambos de una manera directa y sincera, y les prometo que hay más sorpresas de lo que se esperan.

Why I Adopted My Husband fue una lectura diferente. Educativa y entretenida a partes iguales, tiene su dosis de originalidad, lo que la hace aún más disfrutable. No hay grandes ideas ni situaciones extremas, pero sí hay una historia con la que simpatizas en poco tiempo, arte adorable para sonreír, y varias lecciones de vida que te hacen ver las cosas desde otro punto de vista para evaluar tus circunstancias.

I recently read a manga that I loved. It presents a reality that you don't hear much about, which is daily life and the challenges faced by couples and marriages in Japan. It's ironic that there are so many restrictions in a country where yaoi and BL is so popular, but there is always a way out. As a gay couple living in Japan (where gay marriage is not yet legal), Yuta and Kyota have found a unique loophole in order for the government to recognize their union: Kyota adopted Yuta.

This nonfiction manga depicts how the two men met and fell in love, their life together for the last twenty years, their struggle to communicate their relationship to their families, their anxieties about the future, and their determination to live happily and carefree as any other married couple, while they strive for independence and equal rights in a changing cultural landscape.

Due to geographical proximity, many of the news and content I read are from the American continent. I thought that Japan would be a more progressive country with this theme, but as the manga shows, that is not the case. The story reveals how difficult it is, how little understanding there is, and the challenges faced by couples like Yuta and Kyota.

The art strays a long way from what I prefer, so it took me a bit to warm to the characters, but once you get used to it you end up completely immersing yourself in the storytelling. The humor of the script is complemented by the chibi-style art, giving an excellent result. Time flew by for me, both for how entertaining and educational it is.

I would say that last one is the aspect that I like the most about the manga. It doesn't just tell a story, but includes sections where Yuta explains the methods he and Kyota used to live as a married couple. It is more fascinating than you can imagine! It presents the reality of both of them in a direct and honest way, and I promise you that there are more surprises than you expect.

Why I Adopted My Husband was a different read. Educative and entertaining in equal parts, it has its dose of originality, which makes it even more enjoyable. There are no big ideas or extreme situations, but there is a story to warm to in no time, adorable art to put a smile on your face, and several life lessons that make you look at things from another point of view to evaluate your circumstances.
