Cómic: Over My Dead Body

Hay un libro que me hizo sentir niño de nuevo. Mi corazoncito amante del horror, lo gótico, el drama, y tramas complejas, se ablandó cuando leí Over My Dead Body, by Sweeney Boo. Es una novela gráfica juvenil preciosa que me dejó sin palabras cuando la terminé, una trama sencilla pero atrapante que complació mis lados infantil y adulto a la vez.

A los fanáticos de Chilling Adventures of Sabrina les encantará sumergirse en el mundo misterioso y de brujas de la creadora nominada a premios Sweeney Boo. Encantadoras ilustraciones a todo color encantarán a los lectores mientras exploran los pasillos del Instituto de Magia de Younwity y el bosque prohibido que se encuentra más allá.

En los días previos a Samhain, el velo entre el mundo de los muertos y el de los vivos es muy delgado.

Un día, todo fue exactamente como se suponía que debía ser. Y lo siguiente, lo más cercano que Abby tuvo a una hermana, Noreen, simplemente… desapareció.

Distraídes por los preparativos anuales para el festival Samhain, les compañeres de clase de Abby se apresuran a dejar de lado la desaparición de Noreen. El Coven la encontrará, dicen les amiges de Abby. Lo tienen bajo control.

Pero Abby no puede dejarlo pasar. Pronto, una búsqueda de respuestas la lleva a una madriguera de conejo que descubre más secretos de los que Abby puede manejar. A medida que aumenta la evidencia que la conduce hacia los bosques prohibidos que rodean la academia, comienza a ver que la desaparición de Noreen tiene misteriosamente mucho en común con otra chica que desapareció hace tantos años...

¡Fue una lectura preciosa! Aunque tiene toques oscuros, y obviamente es para lectores más jóvenes, como adulto la pude disfrutar muchísimo. El guión es sólido, con un desarrollo excelente de los personajes, y varias sorpresas al final. El tema de la representación está muy  bien trabajado, aunque hubiese preferido ver al menos algún brujo hombre entre les protagonistas.

El arte también se lleva mis respetos. Colorido, evocador, poético, y limpio en todo momento, hubo más de un panel que quería para mi cuarto. Es un trabajo que lleva la definición de atmosférico a otro nivel, creando un aura de encanto, misterio, terror, o añoranza según sea el caso, apoyándose tanto en elementos físicos como juegos de tonos y sombras.

Mi única queja es que se asemeja mucho a Harry Potter en algunas escenas, y tan pronto como vi la referencia supe de inmediato cómo iba a resultar todo. Sí hubo elementos originales, pero sentí que estaba leyendo un fanfiction en ocasiones (y no tengo problemas con ello, pero no quería leer un fanfic en ese momento). También hubo un detalle al final que no me convenció, una salida fácil y aburrida.

En pocas palabras, una lectura que te encanta con su estética, sus mensajes, y su historia de principio a fin. Aunque siempre estoy diciendo que hubiese querido que esta lectura o esta otra hubiesen sido más extensas, Over My Dead Body es perfecta con la extensión que tiene. Mantiene viva esa inocencia infantil que todos llevamos por dentro, esa de la que a veces nos olvidamos, esa que sale a flote con cada página de la historia de Abby.

My little heart, lover of horror, gothic, drama, and complex plots, softened when I read Over My Dead Body, by Sweeney Boo. It's a gorgeous YA graphic novel that left me speechless when I finished it, a simple yet compelling plot that appealed to both my child and adult sides.

In the days leading up to Samhain, the veil between the world of the dead and the living is at its thinnest.

One day, everything was exactly as it was supposed to be. And the next, the closest thing Abby ever had to a sister, Noreen, was just… gone.

Distracted by the annual preparations for the Samhain festival, Abby’s classmates are quick to put Noreen’s disappearance aside. The Coven will find her, Abby’s friends say. They have it under control.

But Abby can’t let it go. Soon a search for answers leads her down a rabbit hole that uncovers more secrets than Abby can handle. As mounting evidence steers her toward the off-limits woods that surround the academy, she begins to see that Noreen’s disappearance mysteriously has a lot in common with another girl who went missing all those years ago…

It was a lovely read! Although it has dark touches, and is obviously for younger readers, as an adult I really enjoyed it. The script is solid, with excellent character development, and several surprises at the end. The theme of the representation is very well worked, although I would have preferred to see at least one male witch among the protagonists.

The art also takes my respects. Colorful, evocative, poetic, and clean at all times, there was more than one panel that I wanted for my room. It's a work that takes the definition of atmospheric to another level, creating an aura of charm, mystery, terror, or longing as the case may be, relying on both physical elements and games of tones and shadows.

My only complaint is that it's very Harry Potter-like in some scenes, and as soon as I saw the reference I knew immediately how it was going to turn out. There were original elements, but I felt like I was reading fanfiction at times (and I have no problem with that, but I didn't want to read fanfiction at the time). There was also a detail at the end that did not convince me, an easy and boring exit.

In short, a reading that charms you with its aesthetics, its messages, and its story from start to finish. Although I'm always saying that I'd have wanted this reading or this one to have been longer, Over My Dead Body is perfect with the length it has. It keeps alive that childish innocence we all carry inside, the one that we sometimes forget about, the one that comes to the surface with each page of Abby's story.
