Reseña / Review: The Unbalancing

He estado leyendo tantos mangas y cómics que casi me olvido de los libros. Quise probar algo diferente, un libro que me sacara de mi zona de comfort y me retara como lector, y lo encontré en The Unbalancing, por R.B. Lemberg, parte del Birdverse. Es una novela con un mundo fascinante del que quiero saber más. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

The Unbalancing tiene sus raíces en la cosmología mística, la neurodiversidad y la rareza que infunde la prosa lírica de Lemberg, que ha invitado a entusiastas comparaciones con N. K. Jemisin, Patricia A. McKillip y Ursula K. Le Guin.

Bajo las aguas de las islas de Gelle-Geu, una estrella duerme inquieta. La célebre nueva guardiana estelar Ranra Kekeri, preocupada por los crecientes temblores, se enfrenta a los problemas dejados por su predecesor.

Mientras tanto, su antepasade Semberí le pide repetidamente a le poeta Erígra Lilún, que simplemente quiere que le dejen en paz, que se haga cargo del cuidado de la estrella. Semberí insiste en contarle a Lilún cuentos misteriosos sobre la liberación de las estrellas por parte de la diosa Bird.

Cuando Ranra y Lilún se encuentran, las chispas comienzan a volar. Una configuración imprevista de sus mágicos nombresprofundos ilumina el problema bajo las mareas. Para Ranra y Lilún, su historia apenas comienza; para la gente de Gelle-Geu, bien puede ser demasiado tarde para salvar su hogar.

La idea en general me encantó. Una sociedad utópica en donde cualquier tipo de inclinación, identidad, o condición es vista como parte de la persona, pero no como todo lo que importa sobre esta persona. Hay personajes interesantes y que llaman la atención desde el principio, como lo son Lilún y Semberí, y me gustó mucho el final, una apuesta realista que funciona bastante bien.

Sin embargo, sentí que estaba entrando a una saga por medio del segundo o tercer libro, con un mundo ya construido y conceptos con los que ya debería estar familiarizado. Por ende, hubo detalles que no entendí, como la relación entre Semberí y Lilún, el sistema mágico, y la conexión de los personajes con ciertos lugares. También tengo que agregar la relación entre Lilún y Ranra, un instalove tan apresurado que no pude sentir nada al respecto.

Sin embargo, las descripciones me gustaron bastante. Había escenas y metáforas hermosas, como si de un poema se tratase, otras que no convencieron tanto, al grado de que me dejaron confundido porque no tenían sentido. Mis favoritas fueron en las escenas donde Lilún estaba abrumade. Pude conectarme con cada uno, me sentí identificado, y me ayudó a mantenerme en la lectura.

Es un estilo de fantasía bastante particular que no había leído, y me gustaría adentrarme más porque el mundo es fascinante, excelentemente construido, y con personajes interesantes. Sin embargo, no pude apreciarlo del todo porque parece necesario estar familiarizado con la saga y haber leído material previo para no sentirte perdido. Aún así, admito que lo disfruté.

I've been reading so many mangas and comics I almost forgot about books. I wanted to try something different, a book that would take me out of my comfort zone and challenge me as a reader, and I found it in The Unbalancing, by R.B. Lemberg, part of the Birdverse. It's a novel with a fascinating world that I want to know more about. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

Meanwhile, the poet Erígra Lilún, who merely wants to be left alone, is repeatedly asked by their ancestor Semberí to take over the starkeeping helm. Semberí insists upon telling Lilún mysterious tales of the deliverance of the stars by the goddess Bird.

When Ranra and Lilún meet, sparks begin to fly. An unforeseen configuration of their magical deepnames illuminates the trouble under the tides. For Ranra and Lilún, their story is just beginning; for the people of Gelle-Geu, it may well be too late to save their home.

I loved the idea in general. A utopian society where any type of inclination, identity, or condition is seen as part of the person, but not as everything that matters about this person. There are interesting characters that attract attention from the beginning, such as Lilún and Semberí, and I really liked the ending, a realistic bet that works quite well.

However, I felt like I was entering a saga by way of the second or third book, with a world already built and concepts I should already be familiar with. Therefore, there were details I didn't understand, such as the relationship between Semberí and Lilún, the magical system, and the connection of the characters with certain places. I also have to add the relationship between Lilún and Ranra, an instalove so rushed that I couldn't feel anything about it.

However, I quite liked the descriptions. There were beautiful scenes and metaphors, as if it were a poem, others that were not so convincing, to the point that they left me confused because they didn't make sense. My favorites were in the scenes where Lilún was overwhelmed. I was able to connect with each one, I felt identified, and it helped me keep reading.

It's a very particular style of fantasy that I hadn't read before, and I'd like to delve deeper because the world is fascinating, excellently built, and with interesting characters. However, I couldn't fully appreciate it because it seems necessary to be familiar with the series and have read previous material to not feel lost. Still, I admit that I enjoyed it.
