Anoche terminé un libro que no me dejaba dormir. Necesitaba saber cómo terminaba todo, qué iba a pasar con los personajes, además de que estaba disfrutando con los diálogos y el estilo de la autora. Little Bird, por Tiffany Meuret, es un libro que se convirtió en una adicción. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Los esqueletos del armario no tienen nada que ver con el de tu patio trasero.

Recién divorciada y en duelo por la muerte de su padre, Josie Lauer se ha encerrado en su casa. Para hacer frente a sus pérdidas, Josie sigue una estricta rutina diaria de trabajo, juega con su perro, Po, y trata de recordar comer una comida decente, y termina cada noche bebiendo grandes cantidades de vodka. En otras palabras, ella no está haciendo frente a nada.

Todo cambia cuando Josie se despierta y descubre que un pequeño arbusto ha brotado en su patio trasero, que de otro modo estaría sucio, la mañana después de otra borrachera. En cuestión de horas, la planta parecida a una enredadera se está volviendo loca y trae compañía. La aparición del crecimiento difícil de manejar también ha anunciado la llegada de una nueva vecina entrometida que insiste en meterse en la vida de Josie. El vecino Josie puede tratar. El esqueleto parlante llamado Skelly que se ha posado en el patio trasero de Josie en un trono hecho de enredaderas, sin embargo, es un asunto completamente diferente.

A medida que la planta extrañamente consciente continúa creciendo y retorciendo sus zarcillos dentro de la vida repentinamente complicada de Josie, Josie comienza a darse cuenta de que su nuevo vecino sabe mucho más sobre las vides y su extraño nuevo visitante de lo que inicialmente deja entrever. Admito que me costó mucho leer este libro porque era muy diferente de lo que esperaba y muchas cosas eran difíciles de entender. Sin embargo, el estilo de la autora me hizo seguir adelante y también porque tenía curiosidad sobre qué pasaría después de esto, y esto otro, y así sucesivamente.

Josie fue un personaje complejo con diferentes capas, diferentes emociones, reacciones, y demasiado humana. Su dolor, sus sentimientos, sus pensamientos, más aún sus inseguridades, eran tan reales por momentos que me maravillaba. Hubo escenas en las que tuve que hacer una pausa porque era demasiado, pero en el buen sentido.

Había otros que se sentían... extraños. Algunos diálogos no parecían realistas, se sentían forzados o apresurados, y las explicaciones de lo que le estaba pasando a Josie estaban tan ocultas que era frustrante seguir esperando una respuesta clara y directa. Tuve que detenerme al final del libro para darle sentido a todo.

Sin embargo, lo disfruté y es un tipo de fantasía que estoy deseando volver a intentar. La autora tiene un estilo agradable, un método de construcción de mundos interesante, y personajes atractivos. La ejecución no fue lo que esperaba, pero pude apreciar este libro por lo que es: una fantasía oscura curativa fácil de disfrutar.

Last night I finished a book that wouldn't let me sleep. I needed to know how it all ended, what was going to happen to the characters, plus I was enjoying the author's dialogues and style. Little Bird, by Tiffany Meuret, is a book that became an addiction. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

The skeletons in the closet have nothing on the one in your backyard.

Freshly divorced and grieving the death of her father, Josie Lauer has caged herself inside her home. To cope with her losses, Josie follows a strict daily routine of work, playing with her dog, Po, and trying to remember to eat a decent meal—and ending each night by drinking copious amounts of vodka. In other words, she is not coping at all.

Everything changes when Josie wakes to find a small shrub has sprouted in her otherwise dirt backyard the morning after yet another bender. Within hours, the vine-like plant is running amok—and it’s brought company. The appearance of the unwieldly growth has also heralded the arrival of a busybody new neighbor who insists on thrusting herself into Josie’s life. The neighbor Josie can deal with. The talking skeleton called Skelly that has perched itself in Josie’s backyard on a throne made of vines, however, is an entirely different matter.

As the strangely sentient plant continues to grow and twist its tendrils inside Josie’s suddenly complicated life, Josie begins to realize her new neighbor knows a lot more about the vines and her bizarre new visitor than she initially lets on. There’s a reason Skelly has chosen to appear in Josie’s suddenly-blooming backyard and insists on pulling her out of her carefully kept self-isolation. All Josie has to do is figure out what that reason is—and she has only a few days to do it, or else she might find herself on the wrong side of catastrophe.

LITTLE BIRD is a story about found family, no matter how bizarre.

I admit I had a hard time with this book because it was so different from what I expected, and a lot of things were hard to understand. However, the author’s style kept me going and also because I was curious about what would happen after this, and this other thing, and so on.

Josie was a complex character with different layers, different emotions, reactions, and way too human. Her grief, her feelings, her thoughts, even more her insecurities, were so real at times I was marveled. There were scenes that I had to pause at because they were too much, but in a good way.

There were others that felt… strange. Some dialogues didn’t seem realistic, felt forced or rushed, and the explanations for what was happening to Josie are so hidden it was frustrating to keep expecting a clear, direct answer. I had to stop at the end of the book to make sense of it all.

However, I enjoyed it and it’s a type of fantasy that I’m eager to try again. The author has a nice style, interesting worldbuilding method, and appealing characters. The execution wasn’t what I expected, but I was able to appreciate this book for what it is: a healing dark fantasy easy to enjoy.
