No suelo leer antologías, pero siempre hay una excepción si los planetas se alinean y los géneros son los correctos para mí. La sinopsis de Boys, Beasts & Men, por Sam J. Miller, era demasiado atractiva para dejarla pasar, ¡y ahora estoy ahorrando para conseguir una edición impresa por lo bueno que fue! ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Una de las cosas que más me gusta de este libro es que los relatos no son tan cortos. Tienen la longitud necesaria para dejarte entrar en su mundo, que te importen sus personajes, enamorarte de la trama y emocionarte a medida que se acerca el clímax. Más de una vez odié a Sam por los resultados, lo que pasó con los personajes, pero me encantó la forma en que lo hizo.

Tiene una voz sólida que es capaz de cambiar según la historia, según lo que necesite, transformando ideas clásicas en algo nuevo, creativo y único. Cometí el error de intentar leer las historias todas de una vez sólo para terminar fatigado. Disminuir la velocidad fue la decisión correcta para permitirme saborear los mundos de Sam, tener una experiencia sensorial completa, mientras me sumergía en ellos.

Como esperaba, no los disfruté todos en el mismo grado. No diré ningún nombre ni el orden en que aparecen, pero hay dos historias sobre padres que disfruté especialmente, mientras que otra que esperaba leer no estuvo a la altura de mis expectativas. Si bien todas las historias son fantasía y terror en diferentes niveles, son diferentes en forma y resultado.

Boys, Beasts & Men es perfecto para este mes, pero no lo limitaría a solo 31 días. Hay amor, horror, familia, religión, malestar social, etc. Es un libro completo que proporciona diferentes experiencias dependiendo de dónde aterrices. Más puntos a favor porque este libro sirva para vincular Miller-verso que está creando el autor. Estoy ansioso por ver qué sucede a continuación.

One of the things I like the most about this book is that the short stories are not that short. They have the needed length in order to let you in into their world, make you care for their characters, fell in love with the plot, and get excited as the climax approached. More than once I hated Sam for the outcomes, what happened to the characters, but I loved the way he did it.

He has a solid voice that is able to change depending on the story, depending on what he needs, twisting classical ideas into something new, creative, and unique. I made the mistake of trying to read the stories all at once only to end up fatigued. Slowing down was the right decision to let me savor Sam's worlds, have a complete sensory experience, as I got immersed in them.

As I expected, I didn't enjoy all of them to the same degree. I won't say any names or spoil the order in which they appear, but there are two stories about parents that I particularly enjoyed, whereas ano I was looking forward to read didn't live up to my expectations. While all the stories are fantasy and horror to different levels, they are different in form and result.

Boys, Beasts & Men is perfect for this month, yet I wouldn't limit it to just 31 days. There's love, horror, family, religion, social unrest, and so on. It's a complete book that provides different experiences depending on where you land. It's a plus that this book serves to tie in the Miller-verse that the author is creating. I'm eager to see what happens next in it.
