He estado desaparecido por muchas, MUCHAS razones personales. Mi vida ha sido tan caótica que apenas pude encontrar tiempo para leer. Una de esas lecturas, sin embargo, me dejó con una sonrisa en la cara cuando terminé, más aún sabiendo que es el debut de su autora: Together We Rot, por Skyla Arndt. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

La madre de Wil Greene ha estado desaparecida durante más de un año y la policía está lista para dar por cerrado el caso; afirman que se fue de la ciudad y no se puede encontrar a una mujer que quiere desaparecer. Pero sabe que su madre no se iría sin más... y sabe que la familia de su ex mejor amigo, Elwood Clarke, tiene algo que ver con eso.

Elwood ha estado contando aterrorizado los días hasta su cumpleaños número 18. Marca haber dejado la escuela y unirse a su padre pastor para dedicar su vida a su congregación, el Jardín de Adán. Pero cuando regresa a casa después de una noche de un último adiós con sus amigos, ya autoflagelándose por los pecados de beber y desobedecer a su padre, descubre que su camino no es tan virtuoso como pensaba. No es el sucesor de su padre, sino su sacrificio. Porque los bosques en los que creció tienen sed y hay que pagarlos con sangre.

Ahora, huyendo de una familia que lo quiere muerto, recurre a la única que le creerá: Wil. Juntos forman una sociedad reticente; ella lo ayudará a esconderse si él la ayuda a encontrar evidencia de que su familia mató a su madre. Pero al final desentierran más secretos de los que esperaban, desentrañando décadas de oscuros tratos de culto en su ciudad, liderados por la familia Clarke.

Y hay una razón por la que necesitan la sangre de Elwood para sus rituales satánicos. Algo inhumano está creciendo dentro de él. Dondequiera que vaya, las plantas cobran vida y el bosque lo llama, y Wil no está segura de poder salvar al chico al que no puede evitar amar.

La combinación de horror, fantasía, y romance juvenil me llamó la atención desde el primer momento, y la ejecución terminó por convencerme. Los personajes te atrapan desde la primera página, especialmente Elwood. Aunque he leído a varios personajes hombres que tienen el típico pasado oscuro que los tortura, esta vez se sintió más real, más diferente, y más visceral.

Las emociones de cada uno de ellos son suficientemente reales como para que tengas que detenerte de vez en cuando para tomar aire y poder seguir. Hay frases que te llegan directo al alma por el poder que tienen, con más de una escena que te pone la cabeza a volar, tratando de saber qué va a pasar más adelante.

Siento que la autora necesita pulir su estilo un poco más, tengo que admitir. Hubo momentos en que la narración no me convencía del todo. Había partes del libro que sonaban forzadas o fuera de lugar, como si les faltara trabajar un poco más. Sentí que podrían haber quedado mejor, y aunque la lectura no sufre, sí me sacó un poco de la historia.

En resumen, una historia oscura que se te mete en las venas hasta volverse adictiva. Devoré la segunda mitad como si no hubiese un mañana, por no mencionar la cantidad de giros en la trama, las sorpresas, los cambios, hasta que todo desembocó en un final que no me esperaba. Realista en medio de tanta fantasía, es un libro imperdible.

Wil Greene's mom has been missing for over a year, and the police are ready to call the case closed--they claim she skipped town and you can't find a woman who wants to disappear. But she knows her mom wouldn't just leave...and she knows the family of her former best friend, Elwood Clarke, has something to do with it.

Elwood has been counting down the days until his 18th birthday--in dread. It marks leaving school and joining his pastor father in dedicating his life to their congregation, the Garden of Adam. But when he comes home after one night of after a final goodbye with his friends, already self-flagellating for the sins of drinking and disobeying his father, he discovers his path is not as virtuous as he thought. He's not his father's successor, but his sacrifice. For the woods he's grown up with are thirsty, and must be paid in blood.

Now on the run from a family that wants him dead, he turns to the only one who will believe him: Wil. Together, they form a reluctant partnership; she'll help him hide if he helps her find evidence that his family killed her mother. But in the end they dig up more secrets than they bargained for, unraveling decades of dark cult dealings in their town, led by the Clarke family.

And there's a reason they need Elwood's blood for their satanic rituals. Something inhuman is growing inside of him. Everywhere he goes, the plants come alive and the forest calls to him, and Wil isn't sure if she can save the boy she can't help but love.

The combination of horror, fantasy, and young adult romance caught my attention from the first moment, and the execution ended up convincing me. The characters grab you from the first page, especially Elwood. Although I have read several male characters who have the typical dark past that tortures them, this time it felt more real, more different, and more visceral.

The emotions of each of them are real enough that you have to stop from time to time to take a breath and continue. There are phrases that go straight to your soul because of the power they have, with more than one scene that makes your head spin, trying to know what's going to happen later.

I feel like the author needs to polish her style a little more, I have to admit. There were times when the narrative didn't completely convince me. There were parts of the book that sounded forced or out of place, like they needed a little more work. I felt like they could have been better, and although the reading doesn't suffer, it did take me out of the story a little.

In short, a dark story that gets into your veins until it becomes addictive. I devoured the second half like there was no tomorrow, not to mention the number of plot twists, surprises, changes, until everything led to an ending that I wasn't expecting. Realistic in the midst of so much fantasy, it's an unmissable book.
