¡Primera reseña del año! Sin embargo, esto debería considerarse trampa ya que leí este libro a finales del año pasado. Oh bueno. Voy a salir un poco de mi zona de confort para contarles sobre un cómic que no esperaba que me gustara TANTO. O, para ser precisos, un webcómic. Es dulce, lindo, adorable y tiene una saludable dosis de comedia para comenzar bien este 2024: hablo de Boyfriends Volume One, por refrainbow.

Jock, Goth, Nerd y Prep son todos estudiantes de tercer año en la universidad. Pero estudiar es lo último que tienen en mente, ya que lo que más les interesa es conseguir un novio. O varios novios.

Los dos primeros en unirse son Goth (cool y sexy) y Nerd (burbujeante y coqueto). A medida que su incipiente relación se profundiza, no pueden negar su química con los otros amigos de Goth, Jock (dulce y tolerante) y Prep (sensible y ansioso). Nerd sugiere que prueben algo totalmente nuevo para todos en una relación poliamorosa. Todos están dispuestos a intentarlo, porque todos están de acuerdo en que lo único mejor que un lindo novio... ¡son tres lindos novios!

Pero la transición no es tan fácil, ya que Jock y Prep tienen sus propios problemas que resolver, y los cuatro necesitan aprender cómo hacer que su nuevo polículo funcione. A través de las aventuras de la vida amorosa, los novios llegan a entenderse a sí mismos y a los demás de maneras nuevas y profundas.

Divertidísimo y siempre conmovedor, Boyfriends está repleto de momentos de orgullo, grandes y pequeños.

Me llamó mucho la atención que este fuese un romance poliamoroso. He visto que algunas personas usan esto simplemente para incluir sexo, pero Boyfriends es totalmente diferente: es una historia sana, apta para todo público, que te hace reír en cuestión de segundos. Aunque no leo comedia, este libro pudo conmigo y lo terminé en una sentada.

El arte también es adorable, como si estuviera viendo un anime de mi infancia pero con temas actuales, más serios, pero sin perder el toque de inocencia que lo caracteriza. Diría incluso que los colores son mi parte favorita, tonos suaves y pasteles que le dan un aire aún más dulce a las escenas. Hay algunas que son un poco más serias, pero podría contarlas con los dedos de las manos.

Siendo honesto, sí esperaba más desarrollo y más tensión en la relación entre estos cuatro. Siendo la primera relación poliamorosa de cada uno, lo llevan con bastante madurez, bastante calma, al punto de que es perfecto. No me malinterpreten, me encanta que sea todo muy bonito, pero sí esperaba más conflictos, inseguridades, y demás.

En líneas generales, es una historia preciosa para desconectarse de la vida diaria, atreverse a ver las cosas desde otro punto de vista, sin deternerse a pensar mundo en los detalles. Inocente y divertida, este primer volúmen me hizo fan casi de inmediato: ya lo estoy leyendo en Webtoons directamente. Solo espero que se vuelva un poco más realista.

First review of the year! However, this should be considered cheating since I read this book at the end of last year. Oh, well. I'm gonna get out of my comfort zone for a bit and tell about a comic I didn't expect to like THIS much. Or, to be precise, a webcomic. It's sweet, it's cute, it's adorable, and has a healthy dose of comedy to start off the right way this 2024: I'm speaking about Boyfriends Volume One, by refrainbow.

Boy meets boy... meets boy... meets boy!

Jock, Goth, Nerd, and Prep are all juniors in college. But studying is the last thing on their minds as they are mainly interested in getting a boyfriend. Or multiple boyfriends.

The first two to couple up are Goth (cool and sexy) and Nerd (bubbly and flirty). As their budding relationship deepens, they can’t deny their chemistry with Goth’s other friends, Jock (sweet and easygoing) and Prep (sensitive and anxious). Nerd suggests they try something totally brand new to all of a polyamorous relationship. Everyone’s game to try, because they all agree the only thing better than one cute boyfriend…is three cute boyfriends!

But the transition isn’t so smooth, as Jock and Prep have issues of their own to settle, and all four need to learn how to make their new polycule work. Through navigating the adventures of dating life, the boyfriends come to understand themselves and each other in new and profound ways.

Laugh-out-loud funny and always heartwarming, Boyfriends is filled to the brim with moments of pride big and small.

I was very struck by the fact that this was a polyamorous romance. I've seen some people use this simply to include sex, but Boyfriends is totally different: it's a healthy story, suitable for all audiences, that makes you laugh in a matter of seconds. Although I don't read comedy, this book got the better of me and I finished it in one sitting.

The art is also adorable, as if I were watching an anime from my childhood but with current, more serious themes, but without losing the touch of innocence that characterizes it. I would even say that the colors are my favorite part, soft and pastel tones that give an even sweeter air to the scenes. There are some that are a little more serious, but I could count them on my hands.

To be honest, I did expect more development and more tension in the relationship between these four. Being their first polyamorous relationship, they handle it quite maturely, quite calmly, to the point that it's perfect. Don't get me wrong, I love that everything is very nice, but I did expect more conflicts, insecurities, and so on.

In general terms, it's a beautiful story to disconnect from daily life, dare to see things from another point of view, without stopping to think about the details. Innocent and fun, this first volume made me a fan almost immediately: I'm already reading it directly on Webtoons. I just hope it gets a little more realistic.
