Reseña / Review: Relit

Este año me propuse leer historias más diversas, con más representación, diferentes autores, diferentes culturas, para crecer como escritor, lector, y persona. Tuve algunas dudas cuando vi este libro porque he tenido muy malas experiencias con escirtores latinos. Sin embargo, terminó siendo uno de mis favoritos del año pasado: Relit: 16 Latinx Remixes of Classic Stories, editado por Sandra Proudman. ¡Gracias a Under the Umbrella Bookstore por permitirme leer este ARC!

En historias clásicas remezcladas, los personajes latinos toman protagonismo

Orgullo y prejuicio se lanza al espacio exterior, Frankenstein se sumerge en las profundidades del océano y El gran Gatsby flota hasta una isla frente a la costa de Costa Rica.

Una cambiaformas renuncia a su vida para salvar al chico que ama de una bruja malvada. La Ciguapa codicia el corazón de oro de una sirenita. Dos adolescentes desventurades se enamoran mientras el planeta arde a su alrededor.

Ya sea que los personajes se enamoren, luchen contra enemigos o crezcan a través del dolor, cada historia permitirá a los lectores verse a sí mismos como los héroes de las historias que conforman nuestro mundo.

Hacía mucho tiempo que no leía nada latino, así que no lo pensé dos veces cuando tuve este bebé. El equilibrio perfecto entre fantasía, ciencia ficción e incluso un poco de terror fue el principal atractivo a la hora de leer. Incluso incluiría realismo mágico y fantasía científica en algunos casos, porque también hay mucha experimentación entre géneros, formatos y estilos. ¡Es tan diverso que es un placer leerlo!

Es difícil elegir favoritos, pero diría que Mónica Sanz, Amparo Ortiz, Zoraida Córdova, Jasminne Méndez y David Bowles hicieron el mejor trabajo con sus historias. La mejor parte es que no necesitas conocer los clásicos en cuestión para disfrutar de los remixes; de hecho, es posible que incluso les despierten curiosidad por las versiones originales, ¡como la que tengo ahora con respecto a Jane Eyre!

En todas las antologías aparece el mismo comentario de que no te gustan todas las historias. Sin embargo, hay algunas historias que sentí que estaban poco desarrolladas, especialmente una que pareció cortada abruptamente, muy de repente, sin un final claro. No me malinterpreten, hubo algunos finales abiertos que me encantaron, pero ese no fue el que esperaba. También hubo un relato en particular que no me sentó bien.

Considerándolo todo, es un libro hermoso que me hizo soñar, sonreír, tener esperanza y desear vivir algo, si no lo mismo, lo suficientemente parecido. Hay mucho romance, pero también aventuras, drama, adolescencia, etc.; el buen cliché de "hay para todos los gustos", y mentiríamos si dijéramos que eso no nos gusta. ¡No puedo esperar a que lean esto!

It's been a long time since I read anything Latin, so I didn't think twice when I got this baby. The perfect balance between fantasy, sci-fi, and even a bit of horror, was the main attractive when I was reading. I would even include magical realism and science fantasy in a few cases, because there's also a lot of experimentation between genres, formats, and styles. It's so diverse it's a pleasure to read!

It's hard to pick favorites, but I'd say that Monica Sanz, Amparo Ortiz, Zoraida Córdova, Jasminne Mendez, and David Bowles did the best job with their stories. The best part is that you don't need to know the classics in question in order to enjoy the remixes, in fact, they might even make you curious about the original versions, such as I am now regarding Jane Eyre!

There's the same old comment in every anthology that you don't like all the stories. However, there are a few stories I felt were underdeveloped, especially one that seemed cut abruptly all of a sudden with no clear ending. Don't get me wrong, there were some open endings that I loved, but that one wasn't what I expected. There was also one story in particular that didn't sit right in there for me.

All in all, it's a beautiful book that made me dream, smile, hope, and wish to live something, if not the same, close enough. There's a lot of romance, but also adventure, drama, coming of age, and so on; the good cliché of "there's something for everyone", and we'd be lying if we said we don't like that. I can't wait for you to read this!
