Buenas buenas. Ha sido muy difícil leer y escribir después del accidente, pero hoy quiero contarles sobre una novela corta que terminé hace poco, parte de una saga que me tiene enamorado. Es una historia sobre magia, brujería, casas embrujadas, relaciones LGBTQ+, y un matrimonio pasando por dificultades: Odd Spirits, por S. T. Gibson.

Que un matrimonio entre un mago ceremonial moderno y una bruja tarotista funcione requiere mucho compromiso, pero cuando una entidad malévola se instala en la casa de Rhys y Moira, su amor llegará al límite.

Encontrar una solución es más fácil de decir que hacer cuando sus estilos mágicos son polos opuestos; si a eso le sumas un ex psíquico y una sociedad secreta, las cosas están destinadas a complicarse.

Decidí parar la lectura de Evocación por un momento cuando vi que la autora recomenda leer esta novela corta primero, y tengo que decir que no me arrepiento de nada. Es una historia preciosa, con un estilo de escritura evocador, y personajes humanos. Mi favorito en definitiva es Rhys, por sus inseguridades, su mente compleja, junto con algunos rasgos de autismo que identifiqué.

Tanto Moira como David se hacen querer, a pesar de que David es un imbécil en más de una ocasión. El mundo de esta saga está bien construído para dejar que cada miembro del elenco brille en su momento, dándole a cada uno su oportunidad. Sin embargo, es innegable que Rhys y Moira son las estrellas de la obra, en especial por los flashbacks que muestran sus inicios.

Hubo momentos en que sentí que el ritmo de la narración se quedaba corto a la hora de mostrar lo que sucedía. Algunas escenas perdieron algo de poder por esto mismo, aunque luego se recuperaban. Se nota la pasión de Saint en esta saga, en cada una de sus líneas, pero le juega en su contra cuando el estilo destila tanta energía, tanta emoción por lo que va a pasar, cuando aún falta para que esas escenas pasen.

En general, es una lectura preciosa que te engancha, que te hace soñar, y te muestra un lado muy adulto,  muy real, sobre las vivencias de un matrimonio joven. El añadir dos prácticas tan diferentes, como lo son la magia ceremonial y la brujería, le añaden un encanto extra a toda la historia, por no mencionar las ilustaciones de Eleonor Piteira, que fueron la cereza del pastel.

It takes a lot of commitment to make a marriage between a modern ceremonial magician and a tarot witch work, but when a malevolent entity takes up residence in Rhys and Moira’s home, their love will be pushed to the limits.

Brewing up a solution is easier said than done when your magical styles are polar opposites; throw a psychic ex and a secret society in the mix, and things are bound to get messy.

I decided to pause reading Evocation for a moment when I saw that the author recommends reading this short novel first, and I have to say I don't regret it at all. It's a beautiful story, with an evocative writing style and human characters. My ultimate favorite is Rhys, for his insecurities, his complex mind, along with some autistic traits I identified.

Both Moira and David endear themselves to the reader, despite David being a jerk on more than one occasion. The world of this saga is well-constructed to let each member of the cast shine, giving each their opportunity. However, it's undeniable that Rhys and Moira are the stars of the book, especially due to the flashbacks that show their early days.

There were times when I felt the pace of the narrative fell short in showing what was happening. Some scenes lost some power because of this, although they later recovered. Saint's passion shines through in this saga, in every line, but it works against her when the style exudes so much energy, so much emotion about what's about to happen, when those scenes have yet to happen.

Overall, it's a beautiful reading that captivates you, makes you dream, and shows a very adult, very real side to the experiences of a young married couple. The addition of two such different practices, such as ceremonial magic and witchcraft, adds an extra charm to the whole story, not to mention Eleonor Piteira's illustrations, which were the icing on the cake.
