Buen día, Nocturnos. He estado haciéndome cargo de varias cosas y dejé desatendido el blog, sin embargo, hay un libro del que les quiero hablar y que les va a gustar a más de uno. Antes de que me digan nada, sí, está en español. Yo leí la edición en inglés, pero Kel Báthory leyó la traducción. Se trata de Poison: The History of Potions, Powders and Murderous Practitioners, por Ben Hubbard.

Los perfiles de las toxinas más comúnmente utilizadas de cada era revelan cómo los hambrientos de poder, los peligrosos y los desesperados han aprovechado estos asesinos naturales para lograr sus fines.

Los emperadores romanos usaban veneno generosamente para deshacerse de sus rivales, los invitados a las cenas del Renacimiento eran asesinados silenciosamente con vino adulterado y los envenenadores profesionales equiparon a las esposas asesinas con tónicos tóxicos para sus maridos. En las guerras del siglo XX, se utilizaron sustancias venenosas de formas nuevas y terribles para aterrorizar y aniquilar tanto a los civiles como a las fuerzas enemigas.

Hoy, en la búsqueda del arma encubierta perfecta, figuras sombrías despliegan venenos perniciosos que son casi imposibles de rastrear. Como todo toxicólogo aficionado sabe, la diferencia entre un veneno y un medicamento suele ser simplemente la dosis.

Empecé a leer este libro con Kel porque es un tema que no interesa a ambos, algo que nos causa mucha curiosidad, y decidimos aprovechar la oportunidad para comparar opiniones más de una vez. Poison es una lectura súper ligera llena de datos curiosos y que abarca muchos casos, tanto conocidos como otros que pasaron desapercibidos. Siendo así, te mantiene atento en todo momento.

Ben Hubbard hizo un trabajo excelente al reunir varios sucesos impactante en un mismo libro, cada uno más interesante que el otro, y ofrecer un buen primer vistazo a los venenos más usados a lo largo de la historia. Desde las eras antiguas hasta la actualidad, ha habido una impresionante cantidad de amantes de las toxinas con historias dignas de ser contadas.

Pienso que ese sería el único problema del libro, el que sirviera como una introducción y no fuera un poco más a fondo. Quería conocer las historias que se presentan, que el autor se extendiera más, pero solo pasó en pocas ocasiones. No significa que sea una mala lectura, sino que hubiera preferido que detallara en mayor medida.

Como una introducción sencilla al tema está excelente, y la edición no se queda atrás. Tiene muchas imágenes, dibujos, fotografías (algunas un poco fuertes), un diseño precioso lleno de detalles que lo hacen también una obra de arte. Entretendio, fácil de digerir, corto pero lleno de sorpresas, y una delicia para los ojos, Poison: The History of Potions, Powders and Murderous Practitioners, le va a encantar a cualquier curioso del noble arte de envenenar.

I started reading this book with Kel because it's a topic that doesn't interest both of us, something that makes us very curious, and we decided to take the opportunity to compare opinions more than once. Poison is a super light read full of fun facts and covering many cases, both well known and others that went unnoticed. Thus, it keeps you attentive at all times.

Ben Hubbard did an excellent job of bringing several shocking events together in one book, each more interesting than the next, and providing a good first look at the most commonly used poisons throughout history. From the ancient ages to the present day, there have been an impressive number of toxin lovers with stories worth telling.

I think that would be the only problem with the book, that it served as an introduction and didn't go a little deeper. I wanted to know the stories that are presented, that the author extended more, but it only happened on a few occasions. It doesn't mean that it's a bad reading, but that I would have preferred it to be more detailed.

As a simple introduction to the subject it's excellent, and the editing isn't far behind. It has many images, drawings, photographs (some a bit strong), a beautiful design full of details that also make it a work of art. Entertaining, easy to digest, short but full of surprises, and a delight for the eyes, Poison: The History of Potions, Powders and Murderous Practitioners will delight anyone curious about the noble art of poisoning.
