Buenas buenas, gente bonita. ¿Les ha pasado que un libro les sorprende una y otra vez? A mí me pasó justo eso recientemente mientras leía algo diferente, una historia que toma muchos, muchísimos riesgos, a lo largo de su desarrollo. Se trata de Hell Followed With Us, de Andrew Joseph White. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia a través de NetGalley!

Benji, un chico trans de dieciséis años, está huyendo del culto que lo crió, la secta fundamentalista que desató el Armagedón y diezmó a la población mundial. Desesperadamente, busca un lugar donde el culto no pueda ponerle las manos encima o, lo que es más importante, el arma biológica con la que lo infectaron.

Pero cuando es acorralado por monstruos nacidos de la destrucción, Benji es rescatado por un grupo de adolescentes del Centro LGBTQ+ local de Acheson, conocido cariñosamente como ALC. El líder del ALC, Nick, es hermoso, autista, y un tirador mortal, y conoce el secreto más oscuro de Benji: el arma biológica del culto lo está transformando en un monstruo lo suficientemente mortal como para borrar a la humanidad de la tierra de una vez por todas.

Aún así, Nick le ofrece refugio a Benji entre su heterogéneo grupo de adolescentes queers, siempre y cuando Benji pueda controlar al monstruo y usar su poder para defender el ALC. Ansioso por pertenecer, Benji acepta los términos de Nick... hasta que descubre que el misterioso líder del ALC tiene una agenda oculta y más de unos pocos secretos propios.

La sinopsis me capturó desde el primer momento, y si bien es cierto que me tomó mucho tiempo poder empezarlo, no pude parar cuando finalmente lo hice. El autor tiene un estilo que vuelve la lectura una droga. Su forma de describirlo todo, detallado pero sin abrumar, explicando lo que está pasando sin llegar a lo obsesivo, hizo que el tiempo se me pasara volando.

Los sentimientos de Benji son muy humanos, sus experiencias se sienten reales, sin mencionar que el mundo está bien construido. Las ideas del fin del mundo y de las sectas religiosas no son nuevas, pero es justo allí en donde quedé sorprendido, porque todo se sentía nuevo, se sentía original. El punto de vista de Benji es único, lo cual le da puntos extra a la historia.

Ahora, lo que me molestó al punto de dejarme inconforme es que no hay una explicación directa de qué fue lo que le pasó a Benji al huir, qué pasó con su padre, con Theo, cómo inició el Fin del Mundo... En fin, tantos detalles que quedaron sueltos o explicados por encima que tuve que atar cabos al terminar. Terminé frustrado, un poco confuso, porque releí algunas escenas, y aún así no entendía.

Con todo esto, Hell Followed With Us es una lectura que se disfruta mucho, un libro atrapante con un concepto bien empleado. Andrew Joseph White tiene un estilo que te atrapa desde el inicio, que si bien no terminó de convencerme, es lo suficientemente fuerte para hacerme esperar con ansias su próximo libro. Si tienen la oportunidad de leerlo, ¡van a disfrutar mucho!

Sixteen-year-old trans boy Benji is on the run from the cult that raised him—the fundamentalist sect that unleashed Armageddon and decimated the world’s population. Desperately, he searches for a place where the cult can’t get their hands on him, or more importantly, on the bioweapon they infected him with.

But when cornered by monsters born from the destruction, Benji is rescued by a group of teens from the local Acheson LGBTQ+ Center, affectionately known as the ALC. The ALC’s leader, Nick, is gorgeous, autistic, and a deadly shot, and he knows Benji’s darkest secret: the cult’s bioweapon is mutating him into a monster deadly enough to wipe humanity from the earth once and for all.

Still, Nick offers Benji shelter among his ragtag group of queer teens, as long as Benji can control the monster and use its power to defend the ALC. Eager to belong, Benji accepts Nick’s terms…until he discovers the ALC’s mysterious leader has a hidden agenda, and more than a few secrets of his own.

The synopsis captivated me from the first moment, and although it took me a long time to get started, I couldn't stop when I finally did it. The author has a style that turns reading into a drug. His way of describing everything, detailed but not overwhelming, explaining what's going on without being obsessive, made time fly by.

Benji's feelings are very human, his experiences feel real, not to mention the world is well built. The ideas of the end of the world and religious sects are not new, but it's right there where I was surprised, because everything felt new, it felt original. Benji's point of view is unique, which gives the story extra points.

Now, what bothered me to the point of leaving me dissatisfied is that there's no direct explanation of what happened to Benji when he ran away, what happened to his father, to Theo, how the End of the World began... Anyway , so many details that were left loose or not clearly explained that I had to connect the dots when I finished. I ended up frustrated, a little confused, because I reread some scenes, and still didn't understand.

With all this, Hell Followed With Us is a very enjoyable reading, an engaging book with a well-used concept. Andrew Joseph White has a style that catches you from the start, and although it didn't finish convincing me, it's strong enough to make me look forward to his next book. If you get a chance to read it, you're going to really enjoy it!
