El Colmo de la Piratería en Wattpad / The Height of Piracy in Wattpad

Hace poco vi algo que me dejó atónito. Unos supuestos "lectores" estaban pirateando libros de varias escritoras, pero esa no es la novedad. Eran escritoras de Wattpad. Los libros estaban gratis en Wattpad. Esta gente está pirateando libros gratuitos.

¿Ustedes le encuentran sentido? Porque yo no.

La piratería ya es un problema suficientemente grande. Ser escritor independiente es suficientemente grande. Tener que escribir, editar, corregir, diseñar, publicitar, y hacer todo por tu cuenta ya es mucho trabajo. Es algo que nadie quiere hacer. Pero que encima de todo esto lo roben cuando lo regalas de buena voluntad es demasiado.

¿Por qué subir los libros gratis? Porque queremos que nos lean. Porque amamos lo que hacemos. Porque sabemos que leer es caro y muchas veces ser personas responsables impide que compremos con tranquilidad. Porque somos lectores antes que escritores. Entendemos que es difícil.

Además, es una herramienta publicitaria. Perdemos horas de sueño y vida social para que los demás nos puedan leer y nos den una oportunidad, para que los números suban y lleguemos a más personas. Para que las editoriales vean los números y apuesten por nosotros. Regalamos nuestro tiempo para crecer.

Sin embargo, que ahora haya gente que dicen ser lectores robando algo que ha sido gratis desde el principio es otro nivel de descaro, es una falta de respeto inmensa. Está perfecto que nos quieran leer, que quieran disfrutar, ¿pero tanto cuesta descargar una aplicación? ¿Tanto les cuesta hacer las cosas bien?

A los escritores afectados, hagan públicos estos casos, denuncien los grupos, pidan ayuda a sus verdaderos lectores. Vi que algunos incluso querían dejar de escribir, que no querían compartir sus historias, y están en todo su derecho de sentirse mal, pero recuerden por qué empezaron a escribir en primer lugar.

Los casos que vi sucedieron en Telegram, una aplicación de mensajería. Si descubren que alguien está haciendo esto con sus libros, hay varias cosas que pueden hacer:

• Escriban a abuse@telegram.org y dmca@telegram.org, y si tienen abogado, pídanle que lo haga.
• Si tienen los nombres o el acceso, reporten los mensajes y el canal.
• Intenten encontrar quién maneja el canal, comuníquense con ellos en plataformas alternativas y soliciten la eliminación.
• Encuentren qué agencia de seguridad de Internet o derechos de autor puede ayudarlos y planteen sus casos.
• Algunos han dicho que, si el canal es pequeño, es mejor ignorarlo. Esto lo dejo al criterio de cada uno.

Además, comuníquense con los Embajadores de Wattpad y soliciten apoyo. La mayoría de las veces también son escritores y podrían tener más recursos para ayudarlos con esto. Wattpad también tiene políticas y formas de reportar infracciones de derechos de autor. Las redes sociales también son sus amigas para mostrar lo que pasa y exponer a los usuarios.

A los "lectores", tengan vergüenza. ¿Ustedes regalarían su trabajo? ¿Pasarían meses esforzándose para que alguien le robe lo que es suyo? Pónganse del otro lado de la pantalla, esperando que la gente los lea, vote por sus historias, comparta, y vean que les están robando algo que ustedes mismos ofrecieron como un regalo.

Uno creería que ha visto de todo, pero a veces el internet te abre los ojos. Hasta donde sé, esto no me ha pasado, y tampoco quisiera enterarme, pero son cosas de las que hay que estar al tanto. Si alguien ve algo, avíseme, por favor. En lo personal, yo pienso seguir escribiendo sin importar nada, es parte de lo que soy, y preferiría morirme antes que abandonar. Solo queda aceptar el apoyo y esperar lo mejor (y mejores lectores).

I recently saw something that astonished me. Some supposed "readers" were pirating books by various writers, but that's not the news. They were writers in Wattpad writers. The books are free on Wattpad. These people are pirating free books.

Does it have any sense for you? Because it does not to me.

Piracy is already a big enough problem. Being an independent writer is big enough. Having to write, edit, proofread, design, advertise, and do everything on your own is already a lot of work. It's something that nobody wants to do. But that on top of all this people steal it when you give it away in good will is too much.

Why upload the books for free? Because we want to be read. Because we love what we do. Because we know that reading is expensive and many times being responsible people prevents us from buying with a peace of mind. Because we are readers before writers. We understand that it's difficult.

In addition, it's an advertising tool. We lose hours of sleep and social life so that others can read us and give us an opportunity, so that the numbers rise and we reach more people. For publishers to see the numbers and bet on us. We give our time to grow.

However, the fact that now there are people claiming to be readers stealing something that's been free from the beginning is another level of impudence, it's a huge lack of respect. It's great that they want to read us, that they want to enjoy, but is it so hard to download one application? Is it so hard to do things right?

To the affected writers, make these cases public, denounce the groups, ask your real readers for help. I saw some even wanted to stop writing, didn't want to share their stories, and you have every right to feel bad, but remember why you started writing in the first place.

The cases I saw happened in Telegram, a messaging app. If you discover that someone is doing this with your books, there are things you can do:

• Write to abuse@telegram.org and dmca@telegram.org, and if you have a lawyer, ask them to do it.
• If you have the names or access, report the messages and channel.
• Try finding who is running the channel, reach out to them on alternate platforms and request deletion.
• Find which agency of internet security or copyright can help you and share your case.
• Some have said that, if the channel is small, then it's best to ignore. I'll leave this for the discretion of each one.

Also, reach out to the Wattpad Ambassadors and ask for support. Most of the time they're also writers, and could have more resources to help you with this. Wattpad also has policies and ways to report copyright infringement. Social networks are also your friends to show what's happening and expose users.

To the "readers", have some shame. Would you give away your work? Would you spend months of effort just for someone to steal what's yours? Put yourselves on the other side of the screen, hoping people will read, vote on, share, and see that something you gave yourself as a gift is being stolen.

You'd think you've seen it all, but sometimes the internet opens your eyes. As far as I know, this hasn't happened to me, and I wouldn't want to find out either, but these are things to be aware of. If anyone sees anything, please let me know. Personally, I plan to continue writing no matter what, it's part of who I am, and I would rather die than give up. It only remains to accept the support that and hope for the best (and better readers).
