Estos días estuve leyendo una novela a la que le tenía muchas ganas y de la que he escuchado solo alabanzas. A Dowry of Blood, por S.T. Gibson, me devolvió el amor por los vampiros y el terror. Es una novela adictiva que te pone a pensar de principio a fin y te acelera el pulso en segundos.

Pero cuando Drácula atrae a una astuta aristócrata y un artista hambriento a su red de pasión y engaño, Constanta se da cuenta de que su amado es capaz de cosas terribles.

Al encontrar consuelo en los brazos de sus consortes rivales, comienza a desentrañar los oscuros secretos de su marido. Con las vidas de todos los que ama en juego, Constanta tendrá que elegir entre su propia libertad y el amor por su marido. Pero los lazos forjados por la sangre solo pueden romperse con la muerte.

Aunque hay muchas personas catalogando este libro de romántico, quiero dejar algo en claro. No. Lo. Es. Hay abuso, maltrato, manipulación, violencia, y pare usted de contar. Es una historia de terror hecha y derecha, de esas que te mantienen despierto hasta tarde, y si bien hay momentos en que pareciera que todo va bien, les cuento que no. Las cosas empeoran con el tiempo para Constanta, Magdalena, y Alexi.

Tengo que aplaudir la creatividad de la autora. Es una historia entretenida y que no defrauda. Sí escuché que el final era debatible, y es cierto que me esperaba algo diferente, pero es muy adecuado por el tipo de historia que cuenta. Aquí entra la verdadera habilidad, el poder darle a la historia el cierre que se merece en lugar de lo dictan las tendencias.

Si bien también me gusta el estilo, llega un momento en que la narración se vuelve pesada. Es difícil avanzar porque todas las líneas llevan una carga dramática intensa, demasiada, entonces pierde fuerza, impacto. No diría que se vuelve tedioso, o fastidioso, pero sí débil. Aunque impulsó el inicio, se volvió algo común, sin mucha gracia, hasta que finalmente alcanzó el punto medio que me permitió seguir.

Un buen detalle de la edición que leí, la estadounidense por lo que parece, es que incluye el relato An Encore of Roses, el libro 1.5 en la saga. Los personajes evolucionan en todo momento, pero este relato lo muestra bajo una luz diferente, más madura, más realista. Con una trama que te enamora, un trío fascinante, y el encanto de los clásicos góticos, esta novela es fácil una de mis favoritas de este año.

These days I was reading a novel I really wanted and from which I have only heard praise. A Dowry of Blood, by S.T. Gibson, gave me back my love for vampires and horror. It's an addictive novel that makes you think from start to finish and makes your pulse race in seconds.

Although there are many people classifying this book as romantic, I want to make something clear. It. Is. Not. There's abuse, mistreatment, manipulation, violence, and so on and on. It's a full-fledged horror story, one of those that keep you up late, and although there are times when it seems that everything's going well, I tell you that it is not. Things get worse over time for Constanta, Magdalena, and Alexi.

I have to applaud the creativity of the author. It's an entertaining story that doesn't disappoint. I did hear that the ending was debatable, and it's true that I expected something different, but it's very appropriate for the type of story it tells. This is where true skill comes in, being able to give the story the closure it deserves instead of dictated by trends.

While I also like the style, there comes a point when the storytelling gets heavy. It's difficult to advance because all the lines carry an intense dramatic charge, too much, then it loses strength, impact. I wouldn't say that it becomes tedious, or annoying, but weak. Although it jumpstarted the start, it became mundane, unfunny, until it finally hit the midpoint that allowed me to continue.

A good detail of the edition that I read, from the US it seems, is that it includes the story An Encore of Roses, book 1.5 in the saga. The characters evolve all the time, but this story shows them in a different, more mature, more realistic light. With a plot that makes you fall in love, a fascinating trio, and the charm of the Gothic classics, this novel is easily one of my favorites this year.
