Hace tiempo que no leo algo que me haga reír. Cuando leí la sinopsis de My Coworker Has a Secret! Volume 1, por Mushiro, decidí darle una oportunidad porque se veía muy entretenida, inocente, y prometedora. Dicho y hecho, fue una lectura alegre y ligera a partes iguales. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia a cambio de una reseña honesta!

Akari es una oficinista promedio de 25 años que guarda un secreto que le oculta a sus colegas: ¡está tan obsesionada con el ídolo, chico lindo Ren-Ren que la está arruinando financieramente!

Cuando una paloma le roba el almuerzo, un extraño amable ofrece su bento casero en su lugar y, después de aceptar amablemente, Akari le dice la razón por la que está tan desamparada. Es la primera vez que revela su estilo de vida otaku secreto a alguien. Por supuesto, ella asume que nunca volverá a ver a este extraño... ¡hasta que aparece como el nuevo empleado en su oficina! ¿Puede Akari confiar en él para ocultar su trágico y vergonzoso secreto a sus compañeros de trabajo?

No fui fan del principio. Se sintió apresurado, no tan sólido como prefiero, pero sentó las bases para una buena historia, y fue una buena historia. Empecé a sonreír y reír en poco tiempo. Hubo varias escenas que me gustaron, algunas graciosas, otras más dramáticas y otras más centradas en la trama y el desarrollo. Akari no me encantó como personaje, pero es fácil enamorarse de ella cuando le das una oportunidad.

También pude ver algo de mí en ella. Como un adulto con gustos peculiares, fue fácil relacionarse con su lucha por tratar de mantener todo en secreto, incluso sus esfuerzos por pagar todo y ser una adulta responsable. Algunos de esos elementos no fueron los mejores, me costó creer que algunas de las cosas pasarían así, ¡pero fueron entretenidos de todos modos!

El arte también fue agradable, reflejando todos los cambios de humor e impresiones, apoyando la narrativa cada vez que lo necesitaba. Me sorprendió lo simple que podía ser y aún así no perder nada de encanto, sin romper la atmósfera, ya fuera un fondo elaborado, o simplemente un diseño abstracto mientras los personajes lidiaban con sus emociones.

Kazama fue un mejor personaje para mí, todavía simple pero más desarrollado y con diferentes lados. Tengo curiosidad sobre su pasado, cómo es, conocerlo mejor, más aún después de ese cliffhanger, y obviamente lo mismo se aplica a Akari, qué hará, cómo cambiará su relación (aunque la portada del segundo volumen es un spoiler, ¡dicha sea la verdad! O eso parece). ¡Les mantendré al tanto!

I haven't read something that makes me laugh in a long time. When I read the synopsis for My Coworker Has a Secret! Volume 1, by Mushiro, I decided to give it a shot because it looked very entertaining, innocent, and promising. Said and done, it was a joyful and light read in equal measure. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

Akari is an average 25-year-old office worker who harbors a secret she hides from her colleagues: she's so obsessed with the pretty-boy idol Ren-Ren that it's ruining her financially!

When her lunch is stolen by a pigeon, a kind stranger offers his homemade bento in its place, and after graciously accepting, Akari tells him the reason she's so destitute. It's the first time she's revealed her secret otaku lifestyle to anyone. Of course, she assumes she'll never see this stranger again... until he shows up as the newest employee at her office! Can Akari trust him to keep her tragic and embarrassing secret from their coworkers?

I wasn't a fan of the beginning. It felt rushed, not as solid as I prefer, but it set the ground for a good story, and a good story it was. I started smiling and laughing in no time. There were several scenes that I liked, some hilarious, some more dramatic, and some that were more plot and development-driven. Akari didn't charm me as a character, but it's easy to fall in love with her when you give her a chance.

I could see some of myself in her, also. As an adult with peculiar likes, it was easy to relate with her struggle to try to keep everything a secret, even her efforts to pay for everything and be a responsible adult. Some of those elements weren't the best, I had a hard time believing some of the things would happen like that, but they're entertaining nonetheless!

The art was also nice, reflecting all the mood changes and impressions, supporting the narrative every single time it needed to. It surprised me how simple it could be and still not lose any charm, not breaking the atmosphere, whether it was an elaborate background, or just an abstract design while the characters dealt with their emotions.

Kazama was a better character for me, still simple but more developed and with different sides. I'm curious about his background, what he's like, get to know him better, even more after that cliffhanger, and obviously the same applies to Akari, what she'll do, how their relationship will change (although the cover of the second volume is a spoiler, truth be told! Or so it seems like). I'll keep you updated!
