Comic: Elles (Serie)

Hace poco tuve la oportunidad de leer algo diferente a lo que suelo leer. Si bien soy amante del terror, también amo la fantasía y los temas sociales. Leer Elles, por Kid Toussaint y Stokart Aveline, fue una forma de reconectarme con mi niño interior y recordarle al adulto lo que me importa. Todo ello acompañado también de una encantadora y saludable dosis de fantasía.

• Sinopsis del primer volumen:

Elle es sólo otra adolescente... la mayor parte del tiempo. Alegre y de buen carácter, no pierde el tiempo y hace amigos en su primer día en su nueva escuela. Pero Elle tiene un secreto: no ha venido sola. Ha traído consigo una colorida mezcla de personalidades, que surgen cuando menos lo espera... ¿Quién es Elle en realidad? ¿Y sus nuevos amigos la apoyarán cuando descubran la verdad?

ABLAZE se enorgullece de presentar Elle(s), una nueva serie vibrante e imaginativa. Con arte brillante al estilo Pixar de Aveline Stokart y una historia cautivadora de Kid Toussaint que reúne momentos de emoción real, misterio, intriga y humor durante los altibajos épicos de la escuela secundaria.

Si bien fue una historia muy simple, incluye temas complejos y profundos como la identidad, la adolescencia, la salud mental, una estructura familiar diferente y hasta el suicidio. Sin embargo, es ideal para todo público por la forma en que trabaja con ellos. Aunque no es posible explorarlos en profundidad, sí presenta una realidad que muchos han experimentado (ejem, ¿yo?)

Con un guión sólido que genera tensión y al mismo tiempo con suficiente espacio para desarrollar diferentes personajes de una manera que los haga sentir humanos, más cercanos a ti, es fácil encariñarse y leer todo en una sentada. Tampoco puedo quejarme del arte porque se describe exactamente como lo que es. Agrega un aire de inocente asombro a todo el producto que cautiva desde la primera página.

Siento que los problemas de salud mental que forman parte de la trama podrían haberse manejado mejor, aunque admito que puede iniciar la conversación sobre esos temas. Los presenta también de una manera sencilla, lo que a mí no me funciona mucho, para ser honesto. El final de la serie sufrió por eso, aunque todavía había algunas emociones y mucho en juego.

En definitiva, es una historia divertida y dulce que te ayuda a ver las cosas desde un punto de vista diferente y al mismo tiempo te permite desconectarte del mundo real. Sin embargo, sí alimenta tu deseo de hacer algo en la vida real, algo que sea significativo, amable, y útil. Es una de esas lecturas que te ayudan a poner las cosas en perspectiva sin que eso afecte lo entretenido que es.

A little time ago I had the chance to read something different to what I usually read. While I'm a lover of horror, I also love fantasy and social issues. Reading Elles, by Kid Toussaint and Stokart Aveline, was a way to reconnect with my inner child and remind the adult about what I care about. All of it also came with a lovely, healthy dose of fantasy.

• Synopsis of the first volume:

Elle is just another teenage girl... most of the time. Bubbly and good-natured, she wastes no time making friends on her first day at her new school. But Elle has a secret: she hasn't come alone. She's brought with her a colorful mix of personalities, which come out when she least expects it... Who is Elle, really? And will her new friends stand by her when they find out the truth?

ABLAZE proudly presents Elle(s), a vibrant, imaginative new series. Featuring brilliant, Pixar-esque art from Aveline Stokart, and an engaging story by Kid Toussaint that brings moments of real emotion, mystery, intrigue and humor together during the epic highs and lows of high school.

While it was a very simple story, it includes complex and deep topics such as identity, being a teenager, mental health, a different family structure, and even suicide. It is family friendly, however, for the way it works with them. Although it's not possible to explore them in depth, it does present a reality that many have experienced (ahem, me?)

With a solid script that builds tension while also with enough room to develop different characters in a way that makes them feel human, closer to you, it's easy to get attached and read everything in one sitting. I can't complain about the art either because it's described exactly for what it is. It adds an air of innocent wonder to the whole product that it charms you from the very first page.

I do feel the mental health issues part of the plot could have been better-handled, although I admit it can get the conversation started about those topics. It presents them also in a simple way, which doesn't work that much for me, to be honest. The ending of the serie suffered because of that, although there were still some emotions and high stakes regardless.

All in all, it's a funny, sweet story that helps you see things from a different point of view while also allowing you to disconnect from the real world. However, it does fuel your desire to do something in real life, something that is meaningful, kind, and helpful. It's one of those readings that help you put things on perspective without that affecting how entertaining it is.
