Manga: Number Call

Seguimos con las reseñas de manga por aquí. Tuve oportunidad de leer una historia de amor sencilla pero entretenida que me hizo sonreír más de una vez. Con un arte dulce y un guión que captura la magia de la vida diaria, es un manga que creo a más de uno le gustará: Number Call, por Nagisa Furuya. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

El estudiante de secundaria Eighto Tachibana siempre ha odiado su nombre, incluidos todos los chistes y juegos de palabras sobre el número 8 que lo acompañan. Es como si el número lo hubiera perseguido como un fantasma desde que era niño. Un día, conoce a un compañero de clase llamado Tomoya Hatta, también conocido como Hachi, la palabra japonesa para "8". Después de leer The Summer of You, no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad de leer el debut the Nagisa. La historia es dulce, enternecedora, con algunas dosis de drama y humor, y una dinámica de la cual es fácil enamorarse. Los dos personajes, aunque sencillos, se sienten genuinos en todo momento, haciendo que una historia común de la vida diaria se vuelva atrapante.

Hay algo en la sencillez del guión que se traduce en el arte. Ambos tienen ese aire de nostalgia, y a medida que los sentimientos salen a flote, el arte también se adapta al tono. Hay algo en la página que hace que toda la lectura se sienta fresca, aunque tampoco puedo decir que fue tan envolvente como esperaba que fuese.

Sin embargo, es un manga al que le falta originalidad. El desarrollo y el estilo de Nagisa Furuya estaban en desarrollo, y si bien es cierto que es una historia fácil de disfrutar, fuera del elemento del número, que viene a ser más bien algo secundario, no hay mucho que haga que destaque por sí sola. Es dulce, sí, y entretenida, también, pero no más que eso.

Perfecta para pasar el rato, Number Call es un romance sencillo sin mucha pena ni gloria que es fácil de disfrutar. Aunque idealizada en algunas escenas y predecible en algunas ocasiones, la trama se siente natural. La recomendaría a cualquiera que esté buscando algo ligero para olvidarse de la vida por un rato, aunque le falte originalidad.

It's as if the number has haunted him like a ghost ever since he was a child. One day, he meets a classmate named Tomoya Hatta, aka Hachi--the Japanese word for "8." What begins as casual greetings and small talk in the hallway soon becomes something much deeper, and Eighto realizes that it's more than just a similar nickname that draws him to Hachi. Could the number that Eighto resented for so long finally bring him something he'll love--and is that someone Hachi?

After reading The Summer of You, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to read Nagisa's debut. The story is sweet, touching, with some doses of drama and humor, and a dynamic that is easy to fall in love with. The two characters, although simple, feel genuine throughout, making a common story of daily life compelling.

There is something about the simplicity of the script that translates into the art. They both have that air of nostalgia, and as the feelings come to the surface, the art also adapts to the tone. There's something about the page that makes the whole read feel fresh, although I can't say it was as immersive as I hoped it would be.

However, it's a manga that lacks originality. Nagisa Furuya's development and style were in development, and while it is true that it's a story easy to enjoy, outside of the number element, which is more of a secondary thing, there's not much that makes it stand out on its own. It's sweet, yes, and entertaining, too, but no more than that.

Perfect to pass the time, Number Call is a simple, no-brainer romance that's easy to enjoy. Although idealized in some scenes and predictable at times, the plot feels natural. I would recommend it to anyone looking for something light to forget about life for a while, even if it lacks originality.
