Red and the Wolves

Otra semana, otra ronda de reseñas. Hoy les traigo una adaptación con temática lésbica que me gustó tanto que la leí de principio a fin sin parar. Si bien no es perfecta, Red and the Wolves: A Graphic Novel, por Cherry Zong, tiene un toque mágico que me cautivó desde el primer capítulo, gracias a un buen guion y un arte evocador. ¡Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Para los amantes de Through the Woods, Blackwater y Squad, llega una oscura reinterpretación sáfica de un cuento clásico.

Red, una cazadora ferozmente leal, ha dedicado su vida a proteger a su abuela, una bruja. Monstruos han estado merodeando por el bosque que llaman hogar, trayendo consigo una misteriosa enfermedad que ha devastado la tierra y ahuyentado a todos los seres vivos. Hasta que Red se topa con una chica lobo herida llamada Sil.

Red se muestra cautelosamente optimista ante la posibilidad de entablar una nueva amistad, pero cuanto más se profundiza su relación, más verdades siniestras comienza a descubrir sobre todo lo que siempre ha conocido.

Red debe tomar la difícil decisión de a quién defender antes de que la catástrofe los consuma a todos. Esta novela gráfica, que combina fantasía apocalíptica con una historia de amor queer, da un giro radical al clásico cuento de Caperucita Roja.

El guión es precioso de a buenas primeras. Cherry Zong sienta las bases del mundo en el que todo se desarrolla con un inicio sólido y personajes bastante humanos. Hay fantasía, terror, drama, y una dinámica familiar que me heló la sangre. Si bien es cierto que trato de mantenerme diverso en mis lecturas, esta estuvo ligeramente más cerca de mi zona de comodidad por los temas que aborda.

La construcción del mundo me pareció bastante buena por los detalles y por la forma en que todo trabaja. Se ve que hubo mucha planeación para que todas las piezas encajaran en Red and the Wolves, especialmente en el aspecto mitológico, que fue mi favorito. Después de la primera mitad, cuando conocemos más de Sil, su pasado, su entorno, y cómo funcionan las cosas en su manada, la lectura se me fue volando.

Tengo que admitir que hubo una buena parte de insta-amor que no me gustó para nada entre Sil y Red, especialmente porque ya se veía venir. Obviamente que las protagonistas iban a terminar juntas, pero el hecho de que Cherry Zong lo mostrara desde el inicio en situaciones tan evidentes le restó magia al proceso. El romance sigue siendo bonito, no lo niego, pero podría haber sido mejor. A esto le añado el cliché cansado de la abuela bruja (spoiler: y la única bruja como la villana). Esperaba algo mejor.

En general, una historia en un mundo intrigante donde, si bien las respuestas se ven a simple vista, la fantasía refleja la realidad que muchos vivimos en este momento. No puedo dejar el arte de lado por lo precioso que es en cada página, la paleta que le inyecta misterio a todo, y los juegos de luces y sombras que le añaden impacto al final. Aunque no es perfecta, Red and the Wolves es una novela gráfica que les recomiendo a quienes disfrutan de los recuentos y las historias LGBTQ+.

Another week, another round of reviews. Today, there is a sapphic retelling I liked so much I read nonstop after I started it. While it's not perfect, Red and the Wolves: A Graphic Novel, by Cherry Zong, has a flavor of magic that sucked me in after the first chapter, thanks to a good script and evocative art. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

Red, a fiercely loyal hunter, has dedicated her life to protecting her witch Grand Mother. Monsters have been roaming the forest that they call home, bringing forth a mysterious illness that has devastated the land and chased every living soul away. Until Red stumbles upon an injured wolf-girl named Sil.

Red is cautiously optimistic to befriend someone new, but the more their relationship deepens, the more she begins to uncover the sinister truths behind everything she’s ever known.

Red must make the difficult decision of who to defend, before catastrophe consumes them all. This graphic novel that's an apocalyptic fantasy meets queer love story turns the classic Little Red Riding Hood fairytale on its head.

The script is beautiful right from the start. Cherry Zong lays the foundation for the world in which everything unfolds with a solid beginning and quite human characters. There's fantasy, horror, drama, and a family dynamic that sent chills down my spine. While I try to maintain diversity in my reading, this one was slightly closer to my comfort zone because of the themes it addresses.

I found the world-building quite good, thanks to the details and the way everything works together. It's clear that a lot of planning went into making all the pieces fit in Red and the Wolves, especially in the mythological aspect, which was my favorite. After the first half, when we learn more about Sil, her past, her environment, and how things work in her pack, the reading flew by.

I have to admit that there was a good amount of insta-love between Sil and Red that I didn't like at all, especially since it was so predictable. Obviously, the protagonists were going to end up together, but the fact that Cherry Zong showed it from the beginning in such obvious situations took away some of the magic. The romance is still sweet, I won't deny it, but it could have been better. To this, I add the tired cliché of the witch grandmother (spoiler: and the only witch as the villain). I expected something better.

Overall, it's a story in an intriguing world where, although the answers are readily apparent, the fantasy reflects the reality that many of us are experiencing right now. I can't overlook the artwork, which is gorgeous on every page, the color palette that injects mystery into everything, and the play of light and shadow that adds impact to the ending. Although it's not perfect, Red and the Wolves is a graphic novel that I recommend to those who enjoy retellings and LGBTQ+ stories.
