Reseña / Review: Samson & Domingo

Espero que hoy estén de humor para un poco de poesía. Hace poco encontré una lectura más que interesante por su estructura, sus temas, y por recordarme que me encantan las novelas juveniles: Se trata de Samson & Domingo, por Gume Laurel III. Gracias a la editorial por enviarme una copia para reseñar!

Alto/Bajo escrito en verso.

Samson y Domingo se enamoran durante el verano previo al tercer año de secundaria. Pero Samson es el jugador estrella del equipo de fútbol de Weslaco North y Domingo es el trompetista de la banda de Weslaco South. Una vez que comienzan las clases, su nuevo amor se ve desafiado por aquellos que no están de acuerdo con que sus escuelas rivales se mezclen, especialmente el hermano mayor de Domingo, Pablo, un jugador de fútbol de Weslaco South. Como si eso no fuera suficiente, el atletismo olímpico de Samson está envuelto en un velo de misterio; la fuente de su fuerza es un secreto que ha prometido guardar durante toda su vida. A medida que el amor entre Samson y Domingo florece, Samson aprende a confiar en Domingo más de lo que nunca antes había confiado en nadie, y Domingo abre su corazón una vez más después de la angustia. ¿Pero su amor será la perdición de Samson?

Esta vez decidí salir totalmente de mi zona de comodidad para atreverme con algo más diferente. Esta novela en verso pareció la opción correcta, ¡y vaya que lo fue! Fue una lectura bastante ligera, sencilla, fácil de disfrutar, y que hizo que el tiempo se me pasara volando. Admito que el inicio no fue lo que esperaba, pero ya estaba inmerso en la lectura a las pocas páginas.

La estructura es un tanto experimental, diferente a lo que esperaba, y es justo allí que está el atractivo: te muestra las cosas desde un nuevo punto de vista sin perder el sentimiento de familiaridad, como si estuvieras leyendo una historia que ya conoces. Hasta cierto punto es así, pues se trata de un romance inspirado en la historia de Sansón. Sin embargo, sigue sintiéndose fresca.

Ya había leído novelas en verso, pero esta se me hizo más interesante. Sin embargo, sentí que aún estaba perdiéndome de más desarrollo, más inmersión. La narración fue excesivamente sencilla por momentos, y hubiera preferido que fuese más detallada, más artística, en vez de quedarse solo en lo que se siente como la punta del iceberg.

En general, es una lectura muy bonita que te recuerda la inocencia de ser joven, de aventurarse a lo que parece imposible, y con un elemento de fantasía tan leve que a veces parece más un sueño, hasta un desenlace que te hace sonreír luego de sorprenderte. Perfecto para pasar el rato, Samson & Domingo te saca más de una sonrisa.

High/Low written in verse. 

Samson and Domingo fall in love during the summer before their junior year of high school. But Samson is the star player of Weslaco North’s football team and Domingo is a French horn player for Weslaco South’s marching band. Once school starts, their new love is challenged by those who don’t agree with their rival schools mixing, especially Domingo’s older brother, Pablo, a football player for South. As if that wasn’t enough, Samson’s Olympian-like athleticism is shrouded in mystery; the source of his strength is a secret he has vowed to keep his entire life. As Samson and Domingo’s love blossoms, Samson learns to trust Domingo more than he has ever trusted anyone before, and Domingo opens his heart once again after heartbreak. But will their love be Samson’s downfall?

This time I decided to totally get out of my comfort zone to try something more different. This verse novel seemed like the right choice, and boy was it! It was a fairly light, simple read, easy to enjoy, and it made the time fly by. I admit that the beginning was not what I expected, but I was already immersed in after reading a few pages.

The structure is somewhat experimental, different from what I expected, and that's exactly where the appeal lies: it shows you things from a new point of view without losing the feeling of familiarity, as if you were reading a story that you already know. To a certain extent this is the case, since it is a romance inspired by the story of Samson. However, it still feels fresh.

I had already read novels in verse, but this one seemed more interesting to me. However, I felt like I was still missing out on more development, more immersion. The narrative seemed excessively simple at times, and I would have preferred it to be more detailed, more artistic, instead of remaining just what feels like the tip of the iceberg.

Overall, it's a very nice read that reminds you of the innocence of being young, of venturing into what seems impossible, and with an element of fantasy so slight that sometimes it seems more like a dream, until an ending that makes you smile after surprising you. Perfect to pass the time, Samson & Domingo brings more than a smile to your face.
