Hace poco terminé de leer un libro que me encantó desde el primer capítulo. The Forest Grimm, por Kathryn Purdie, es una de esas lecturas que se vuelven cada vez más adictivas a medida que avanzas hasta que resulta imposible dejar de leerlo. Tuve que obligarme a cerrar el libro porque resulta que la universidad es importante.

Pero el bosque, que cobra vida con giros oscuros y mortales en algunos de nuestros cuentos de hadas más conocidos, tiene mente propia.

Siempre me han gustado los cuentos de hadas y las leyendas, así que los recuentos son lo mío. Esta historia es tan hermosa como inquietante, con una protagonista que sabe lo que quiere y se concentra en ello. Está lejos de ser perfecta, ¡pero está perfectamente desarrollada! También está lejos de ser la niña insegura que no sabe qué hacer con su vida. Clara está decidida a hacer lo que sea necesario para llegar a donde quiere estar.

Clara y Axel son tan humanos que es fácil simpatizar con ellos, sin mencionar el mundo en el que viven. Las reglas y la magia están bien construidas, y el estilo de escritura es puro asombro. Esta es una lectura atmosférica que no te deja ir en el momento en que la empiezas, ¡el tipo de lectura que me encanta! El nivel de detalle y de la construcción del mundo son de primera clase, pero hay suficiente espacio para explorar en el próximo libro.

Sin embargo, sentí que el diálogo interno de Clara sobre su destino era un poco repetitivo a veces. No fue un problema real, pero sucedió con la suficiente frecuencia como para que me diera cuenta. ¡De todos modos, tengo curiosidad por saber cómo se desarrollará esto en el próximo libro! Las historias incluídas fueron retorcidas de la mejor manera posible, hasta el punto de crear un nuevo universo en el que estoy ansioso por volver a adentrarme.

En general, The Forest Grimm es un libro que se queda contigo después de terminarlo. Todavía estás soñando despierto con la dulce Henni, la madura Clara, y el valiente Axel. Todavía recuerdas lo difícil que fue para ellos llegar a esa página final y te preguntas qué será de ellos en la próxima entrega de esta duología. Por suerte, tengo una copia para reseñar, jeje.

I recently finished a book that I fell in love with from the first chapter. The Forest Grimm, by Kathryn Purdie, is one of those reads that becomes increasingly addictive as you go along until it becomes impossible to put down. I had to force myself to close the book because it turns out college is important.

Years ago, when the villagers whispered their deepest desires to the book, its pages revealed how to obtain them. All was well until someone used the book for an evil purpose―to kill another person. Afterward, the branches of the Forest Grimm snatched the book away, the well water in Grimm’s Hollow turned rancid, and the crops died from disease. The villagers tried to make amends with the forest, but every time someone crossed its border, they never returned.

Now, left with no alternative, Clara and her close friend, Axel―who is fated never to be with her―have set their minds to defying fate and daring to accomplish what no one else has been able to before. But the forest―alive with dark, deadly twists on some of our most well-known fairy tales―has a mind of its own.

I have always loved fairytales and legends, so retellings are right up my alley. This story is as beautiful as it is haunting, with a protagonist who knows what she wants and focuses on it. She is far from being perfect, but she is perfectly developed! She is also far from being the insecure little girl who doesn't know what to do with her life. Clara is determined to do whatever she must to get to where she wants to be.

Clara and Axel are so human that it's easy to sympathize with them, not to mention the world they live in. The rules and magic are well-constructed, and the writing style is pure awe. This is an atmospheric reading that doesn't let you go the moment you start it—the kind of reading I love! The level of detail and the building are high-class, but there is enough room for exploring in the next book.

I did feel, however, that Clara's inner dialogue regarding her fate was a bit repetitive at times. It wasn't a real problem, but it happened often enough for me to notice. I'm curious about how this will play out in the next book, anyway! The stories included were twisted in the best of ways, to the point of creating a new universe that I'm eager to get back into.

All in all, The Forest Grimm is a book that stays with you after you finish it. You´re still daydreaming about sweet Henni, the mature Clara, and brave Axel. You still remember how difficult it was for them to reach that final page, and wonder what will be of them in the next installment of this duology. Lucky me, then, that I happen to have a review copy, hehe.
